Little Big Planet 2 due winter 2010, original sells 3 million

Sony officially announces sequel to adorable platformer will allow creation of games in multiple genres, programmable NPC AI; first trailer inside.

Following Friday's unofficial confirmation of Little Big Planet 2, Sony today made the game's existence officially official. This morning, the PlayStation Blog took the wraps off the sequel, which first surfaced in April via a loose-lipped musician's Twitter post. That outing came five months after a level designer at the game's developer, Media Molecule, shot down sequel talk, saying a retail follow-up would be "counterproductive" to the game's massive community.

Programmable
Programmable "microchips" will make NPCs in LBP2 have intelligent behavior.

Today, Sony made much of the achievements of said community--which has created over 2 million levels for Little Big Planet--when it formally announced Little Big Planet 2. Once again developed by Media Molecule, which Sony bought outright in March, the game will introduce an upgraded toolset for level creation. It will ship exclusively for the PlayStation 3 in "winter 2010," a release window that traditionally runs from December to March.

According to Sony, the sequel will one-up its predecessor by letting players create not just game levels, but also games themselves. The company said this will include "top-down racing games, multiplayer shooters, flying side-scrollers," as well as role-playing games.

A brand-new trailer (viewable below) shows that Little Big Planet 2 players will be able to link various levels to create lengthy games and create intelligent non-player characters. As outlined in GameSpot's brand-new hands-on preview, this latter feat will be achieved via in-game "microchips," which will let players program object and NPC behavior.

I find LB1 a poor platform game with very approximate controls. I played max two hours and never looked back. Kids love it but when you're 30 you expectations are higher.

It's quite soon for MM to release LBP2. But seeing the trailer and I can't complain. It's just plain awesome. Did I just see 7-8 sackboys at once? :P

LittleBigPlanet is a masterpiece. I really hope the title lives on in gamer's memories forever, and with this sequel, it looks like that just may happen.

@Rudorlf: Did you think I didn't know you could make stages? I did, and if it didn't have that level maker, it would be a simple regular platformer nobody would like. ;)

@Lost_M I thumbed you down because you're wrong, seriously, god-know-too wrong. LBP is not just a regular platformer, it's a platformer + Garry's Mod for the PS3. This game allow us to build our own levels, and share our creativity with ours, which is why it's awesome. (Even though I've only played a part of it, I knew what the game can do, thanks to user videos.)

@ XboxN64 : "And dont be a nerd and say that i dont have a ps3 i do and 360 is better. so i dont understand why gamestop removed my post when i came to an intelligent response" Bummer. Maybe they removed your response because it had too much intelligence? Like gamespot mods must be such nerds if they don't see how ps3 sucks, right? Especially when there are exclusive games like LBP for it. Ya ps3 just sucks so much compared to the pure awesomeness that is the xbox with its amazingly wide selection of creative games.

Looks like Martin Lynagh has to work to a sequel after all when co-founders Alex Evans and Mark Healey are adamant on this sequel. Maybe they coaxed him into agreement?

You know, with all those stuff you can do, I think it's better if they release until 2011 Summer. Or it might ended up something like Sonic The Hedgehog 2006. Then again, Media Molecule can do some incredible things. :)

I didn't think LBP2 would be possible because the first LBP was INCREDIBLE and I thought thats the most Media Molecule can do but I've been proven wrong. YOU RULE MEDIA MOLECULE!!!

One poster mentioned how bad the controls were. That's the only thing I didn't like about the controls. They were so friggin floaty. Made it really hard sometimes, but it was a wonderful game nonetheless. Can't wait for the sequel.

they said not too long ago if i recall there wasn't going to be a sequel... oh well. :D cry about it if you think its a money making scheme, because it probably is. the fact that you can play all of the LBP1 levels kind of eases the pain though.

That song is SOOOOOOO catchy! I love LBP to death, but the original stage creator has some serious hiccups. Building a stage is a lot more like taking up a second job as a code monkey. It can be brutal. What's more frustrating is the limitations you find yoursefl under, especially when you want to do the simplest things and have to jump through a million hurdles to make something work and it still isn't the simple thing you wanted. This game looks to fix a great deal of those problems. I've been wanting to make a side scrolling gradius type shooter and walking robots that don't need 20 levers and gears and don't behave oddly. I can't wait for this sequel.

XboxN64: just a simple question i just want to know because imo PS3s better and i dont have a 360 for that reason i dont see the reason of owning one(yet just because i dont own one doesnt mean i dont know a lot about it) im just saying whats better because i see not that much that shoots out at me other than XGC and in game music...yet i will admit it is easier to set up with certain settings and all though and it kind of looks "prettier" in a way...but thats about it

The awesome part about the LBP games is that DLC content can be created by other people meaning it could be never ending. As long as people have a sense of imagination the games can be self sustaining without additional DLC from the devs. As soon as I am able to pre-order I'm gonna put my order through!!!
