Live-Action Aladdin Trailer Reveals Will Smith's Genie And It's So Weird

I have questions.

Disney has released a new trailer for its upcoming live-action Aladdin. It's a fine trailer, complete with colourful city shots and dark, ominous tones, but the real meat of the matter is at the end.

Will Smith's CG version of the Genie is revealed, and, well, have a look for yourself in the video embed above.

Now Playing: Aladdin - Official Trailer #2 | Special Look

I have questions. Why does Will Smith's Genie look like a blue Shrek? Also why has the Genie been hitting the gym? Will Smith also plays a live-action version of the Genie, and you can see an image of him here.

Smith previously spoke to EW about the "terrifying" job of playing the Genie. As you may remember, the late Robin Williams portrayed the Genie in the animated classic, and he leaves very big shoes to fill.

"Robin didn't leave a lot of meat on the bone with the character," Smith said. "[But] I started to feel confident that I could deliver something that was an homage to Robin Williams but was musically different. Just the flavor of the character would be different enough and unique enough that it would be in a different lane, versus trying to compete."

Disney describes the movie as a "thrilling and vibrant" take on Disney's classic animated film. It's directed by Guy Ritchie, and the Sherlock Holmes director's trademark "fast-paced, visceral action" is said to infuse his take on Aladdin.

Mena Massoud plays Aladdin, while Naomi Scott portrays Jasmine. Marwan Kenzari plays Jafar and Navid Negahban plays the Sultan. Alan Menken, who worked on the music for the original Aladdin, is back again and contributing "recordings of the original songs" from the first film. In addition to new versions of the classics, Menken and award-winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote two new tunes for the film.

The new Aladdin hits theatres this May. The studio that made Sharknado, Transmorphers, and Abraham Lincoln Vs. Zombies is making its own Aladdin.

Are all the bigwigs in Hollywood out of original ideas? This is a pathetic money grab by the big mouse. Will not see more than twice.

It is so weird and out of place to see Will's actual face as the Genie.

I love will, and I wish him the best and the best for the movie. But I just can't, I heard the music and my brain automatically filled in the voice, and when it didn't match the body or anything else.....I just can't do it. It's Robin's role, not Will's or Disney's fault but I just can't.

Do not want.

Though, in all fairness, it's not just Will Smith - he's just the nail in the coffin. None of the casting works for me.

But that's fine, because this obviously isn't meant for me.

Naomi Scott is hot. Even though she is British playing an Arab. Still hot though.

I would give her some Arabian eye goggles to go with those Arabian nights.

It’s laughable seeing all the criticism of Will Smith because you could say the exact same things about Robin Williams.

That being said, he does look like an alpha build of a Nav’i done on a PS3.

@Erutan409:

The main argument has been: He plays the same character in all of his movies!

This is a fallacy from the jump, but more on that later. I assume this to mean his comedic roles. Well, guess what? EVERY comedic actor in a comedic performance plays basically the same character in every movie. It's their schtick. Smith has it, Williams had it, Will Ferrell has, Kevin Hart has it, etc. A comedian's style is their DNA. It's unique and if you are successful at it, it is unique AND appealing. They can't change and the people that pay millions to see them in comedic roles don't WANT them to change because they went to the movies expecting their brand of comedy. This is a singling out of one guy you don't like for doing what he supposed to be doing. It's like singling out one soccer player for "kicking too much".

Another argument: He can't act! Robin Williams was a great actor!

Williams' and Smith's pedigree of recognition for their acting have pretty much mirrored each other. Williams one-ups him with his Oscar win for "Good Will Hunting". This is where the fallacy is evident. The Academy AND the Golden Globes saw fit to nominate him for their highest singular award but, "He can't act!". Even if you figure in his Oscar-bait failures like "Collateral Beauty" or "Seven Pounds", Williams has had just as many of the same with movies such as "What Dreams May Come" or "Bicentennial Man".

So when people want to piss on Smith while lifting up the memory of Williams even though their career approach and paths are the same are just fooling themselves for whatever reason. But hey, whatever gets them through the night.

Look I like will smith, he’s been one of my favorite actors for a long time, however so is robin williams. Robin Williams was a comedian, Kevin Hart is a comedian turned actor(Like Robin Williams) Will Ferrell is known for only playing in stupid suppose to be funny movies. Will Smith shouldn’t be mixed in with the lot, it’s like comparing apples and oranges. Will smith is more known for drama/action type films, robin williams was someone who could play in all roles very versatile, from good morning Vietnam, jumanji, good will hunting, Captain Hook etc. Please don’t compare Robin williams and Will Smith they’re each in their own category, unfortunately for Will I don’t feel like the genie role suits him. I agree with others though that the whole cast is just blah, it’s not like Will Smith alone is ruining the movie. I think this is one animated film that Disney should’ve left alone.

Its a live action musical with a grotesque blue monster. Never! As if being a musical wasn’t bad enough. It’s a shame bc the Aladdin story could have been made into a great non-musical. The Jungle Book was the only good one bc it wasnt a musical.

This is just another horrible cashgrab aiming at nostalgic adults who will drag their kids as if they were into tacky Broadway musicals.

Kids can watch the originals on Netflix just like I watched animations like Peter Pan and Pinocchio as a kid and loved them even if they were made some 50 years before I was born. I never needed a cheap makeover

I think obviously the “black attitude”remark was the wrong choice of words for him, too me I feel it’s the we must reboot a bunch of movies and make each main character that was white now black as if to try and prove some point..Aladdin, Annie, Spider-Man into the verse etc. I don’t get the point in the mean time people throw fits when white people are cast in roles that “should be for others” and while I do agree(like The Great Wall), it’s done probably for the same reason that Disney decided to cast Will Smith and that’s there big name actors which will help to promote and push ticket sales vs someone people never heard of, difference though is Matt Damon did well and seemed a fit for the role, where as Will Smith doesn’t. I guess it’s fine though white people should just keep on apologizing for hurting peoples feelings(like Matt Damon did and other white actors/actresses who played in roles that weren’t deemed right for white people) instead of people just growing up and stop being so sensitive to every little thing and taking things the wrong way.

There’s a flaw with your reasoning on this movie. The Genie was never a “white” role. He was a supernatural creature in an animated film voiced by a white actor. It doesn’t make the character white.

I’ll agree with you on this, was a bad example, still doesn’t take away from the fact that I feel Will Smith is out of his league when it comes to this role. However, that’s just my opinion of course. The genie has always been portrayed as more of a goofy kind of comedic type of a character. I don’t feel Will Smith can live up to this like I said before he’s not Robin Williams, Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart etc, Will Smith wasn’t/ isn’t a comedian. He started his career as a rapper/ tv shows and transition to movies, but seems selective in his roles and tends to play it safe.

I find it great that Will Smith is showing such respect for Robin Williams as the iconic Genie. He doesn't have too and in the past has come off as arrogant at times. Robin Williams was a fantastic Genie and anyone who takes on that role will be measured against him.

That said, while some of the visual differences between the cartoon and the live action are a bit off putting, I am still curious to see the overall movie. Disney typically isn't in the business of making movies that don't make money, so they had to have confidence in the direction of this film.

Don't get me wrong, Will Smith is awesome and I'm sure he'll be funny, but I literally ave no interest in seeing any of these Live Action Disney Re-imaginings. I think the only one I've ever seen was Alice in Wonderland, and that was by accident because my sister got it.

I think these live action remakes by Disney are a mistake. They should do them in full CGI instead. The fantastical things that happen in Disney movies don't lend themselves well to live actors and sets.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum:

I think "The Amazing World of Gumball" really hit the nail on the head in their episode "Gumball Spoils the Movie" about this attitude. We think these movies are being made for our generation when the train has already dropped us off at our station and picked up a new batch of passengers. These properties have moved on to the next generation, but the fans of the older generation refuse to let go believing their sensibilities are the ones that should be played to. I probably won't watch this, but I won't deride the kids that do. This is their generation. Same with music. I am a child of the 80s and I will never get Drake and never want to, but the kids think he's great, so they can have him.

@ZombieVirolina: I dunno, I think the live action, with the huge productions and sweeping CGI worlds is absolutely geared towards the people who watched these movies as kids. While the movies would be updated to appeal to the younger generation as well, they are likewise depending on those who loved these movies before to use all that new disposable income to go see these movies.

Arguing Frozen and the like is more towards the younger generation is entirely accurate though. Even still, Disney always tries to implement enough to keep adults interested too.
