Locking Zelda: Skyward Sword's Fast Travel Behind An Amiibo Is A Bummer

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Opinion: The new Zelda & Loftwing Amiibo offers a very helpful feature in Skyward Sword HD, which is why it's disappointing to see it gated behind an additional purchase.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword arrives on Switch in July, and as Nintendo revealed this week, the game is launching alongside an elaborate new Amiibo depicting Zelda with her trusty Loftwing. This figure is much more detailed than many of the previous ones the company has released, and it carries a much steeper price tag than usual as a result. The higher asking price normally wouldn't ruffle consumer feathers considering that Amiibo are often more appealing to core players and enthusiast collectors, but it's the functionality the figure offers that makes it feel like a particularly egregious money grab.

As Nintendo explained, the Zelda & Loftwing Amiibo effectively allows you to quick travel between the surface world and the sky. Scan the figure while you're on the surface, and you can return to the sky from anywhere, even while exploring a dungeon. Scan the figure again while in the sky, and you'll return to the same point on the surface.

As far as Amiibo functionality goes, this is an incredibly handy feature. Typically, the only way to return to the sky from the surface in the game is to interact with Loftwing statues, which are found in specific locations around the world. This means that if you need to head back to Skyloft--the floating island that Link and Zelda call home--to restock on supplies, for instance, you first need to hoof it to one of these statues to launch yourself into the air.

Those who have played the original Wii version of Skyward Sword will remember how frequently Link needs to travel between the surface world and the sky, so the functionality that the Zelda & Loftwing Amiibo offers is a genuine quality-of-life improvement. That's why it's so perplexing that Nintendo is locking such a useful feature behind an additional purchase--one that costs $25 no less. And that's to say nothing of scalpers. Collector items like Amiibo are often snapped up quickly, so if the Zelda & Loftwing Amiibo sells out, it seems you'll just have no way of using this functionality.

To be sure, the Zelda & Loftwing Amiibo's premium price tag isn't the crux of the issue. Nintendo has released even pricier figures than this in the past, including a $30 Detective Pikachu Amiibo and a deluxe-sized $40 Yarn Yoshi Amiibo for Yoshi's Woolly World. Those, however, unlocked ancillary features in their respective games, so players didn't miss out on anything for not picking them up. In Skyward Sword's case, it's not like the game will be unplayable without the Zelda & Loftwing Amiibo's functionality, but the feature it offers outright improves the overall experience, and the only way to take advantage of it is to shell out.

Gating certain features behind Amiibo has always been a delicate balancing act that Nintendo has had to maintain since it first launched the NFC-based figure line in 2014. Tie something significant to Amiibo, and fans will perceive it as a forced additional purchase; tie something minor to them, however, and there will be little incentive to buy the figures. Up until now, Nintendo has maintained that balance by mostly offering superfluous benefits through the Amiibo. While some figures have been used cleverly (being able to summon Wolf Link as an AI companion in Zelda: Breath of the Wild remains one of my favorite uses), most would unlock optional perks, such as new Yoshi patterns in the aforementioned Yoshi's Woolly World, or extra items in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.

The Zelda & Loftwing Amiibo, on the other hand, is the first I can think of to offer such a clear game-improving feature--one that wouldn't be available otherwise if you didn't own the figure. Past Amiibo have come close to approaching that line. For instance, tapping a Bowser Amiibo while playing Bowser's Fury lets you summon Fury Bowser on command rather than having to wait for him to appear on his own, which made collecting some of the Cat Shines a bit quicker, but didn't appreciably alter the experience. With the Zelda & Loftwing Amiibo, however, Nintendo is effectively asking fans to spend extra money to enjoy a major quality-of-life feature that could very well enhance what it's like to play Skyward Sword as a whole. Considering this is the sort of improvement one would typically expect from a $60 remaster, it comes off as a way to wring more money out of fans, and it's disappointing to see.

even less reason to buy a reboot I already didn't really want... I mean how many people were actively demanding a Skyward Sword reboot before an OOT, MM, or even TP reboot? Very confusing approach from Nintendo with the Zelda reboots..

This is the kind of thing that makes gaming such an odd industry. Loud, dissatisfied gamers screaming "We don't want premium products!!", but the premium products and add-ons keep coming, at a seemingly ever-increasing rate.

If you want it, buy it. If you don't want it, don't buy it. That's probably the most reliable democratic process you can partake in.

@mattwoahyeah: Exactly!

They.

Won't.

Stop.

Until.

We.

Do.

Personally? I love the game and would love that QoL feature but, ain't no way I'm getting the Ambiio.

Beyond that, it's not like some enterprising individuals won't make and start selling NFC cards for this and, I think the highest I saw a pack of cards for was something like $15 for the set and it even came with a little holder so...

Honestly, even as a massive Zelda fan, I don't even know why everyone is rushing to try and get this thing-- it's not like a cheaper alternative won't be out 1-2 weeks later. So, yeah, if you're THAT hard up for that feature, wait for the cards to come out. SMH.

Just wait and see how much worse you’ll feel when what’s tied to in-game abilities like this you doesn’t even get you a physical object, but an NIT of Link doing some randomly unique pose.

Unpopular opinion, but this Amiibo is almost like a cheat code for the game. You can still fast travel the way the original game intended.

It's not bad enough that Nintendo are literally milking the shit out of this franchise anyway but then they go ahead and pull a stunt like this?

No new hardware, no new games. Everything done on the cheap. Oh dear.

Why not just put the fast travel in the game as part of the HD remaster? That is just bad. So, only limited amounts of people who pay an additional 25 bucks can fast travel. (if they even score one) I will pass on this title.

@cyberpunk_2077: I think it's a bit too far too but, after thinking about it for a few days, to be fair, it's not as if they haven't done little things like this behind Ambiio before-- it's just that these little things haven't usually been quite this desirable. Usually. There have been a couple of instances but I can't remember them off the top of my head atm.

Anyway, point is that this has happened before so, I can say that, to me at least, it seems like the cycle has been:

Fans complain that the Amiibo "don't do anything" so Nintendo attaches something to them. For awhile, it's just little things like the Wolf Link in BotW or the Mausoleum in FE: Three Houses-- fun a couple of times but not something you would go out of your way for so everyone's happy for a bit.

Then, eventually, Nintendo puts in something everyone wants. Everyone gets mad and complains up a storm, Nintendo backtracks and goes back to all-but ignoring Ambiio functionality again for awhile until fans complain that the Ambiio "don't do anything"......

This is a huge misstep and a bit greedy on their part, don't get me wrong but, to be fair, I've watched this cycle go around and around a couple of times so, I can't say that it's a surprise. Zelda is back to being a blockbuster for them again so, of course they're going to try to cash on it as much as they can right now and, of course, they're going to eventually get greedy.

Still. At least it's not EA we're dealing with (thank goodness!) so, at leas we know that they'll listen again and back off again as they always have so, at least there's that.

For my part? I'm just going to wait for the inevitable knock off cards to come out and pick up whatever pack the pirates put it into both because I refuse to encourage them and also because, at the end of the day, I don't want a shelf of cheap, plastic crap that I have to clean and dust whenever company comes over and at least I can toss the cards into a box or a drawer after I'm done fiddling with them. LOL.

@dlist4ever: oh wow this is so true, I didn’t quite put the thought into it.

You’ve made valid points regarding the amibos and their own desirability etc.

In general there are some that can’t be satisfied given this day and age we are in.

I look forward to this release, I’ve got my diy cards for the botw bonuses somewhere 😊 wonder if they’ll also have some rewards.

As bad as this is. This is for someone who doesn't want to play the exact original experience of the game in HD.

It's like the flashlight in DOOM 3 BFG Edition situation. Sure it's convenient as sin compared to the original. But this is only an issue for someone who couldn't stand the original's flashlight (Which did honestly suck a lot).

I don't have a single amiibo, I don't respect them as items, and I don't care about them. If it's not within the game it's not part of it. Skyward sword's statues will still be a core part of that game, as much as ever, because that's the way it was designed.

@Blackened_Halo: i wouldnt really have issue if they had like 30 amiibos or somethinh in total.

but every game getting a new amiibo. with link using a sword, link using a bow, link sitting on a toilet. it makes the whole thing expensive, feel like every amiibo is a single gunskin and environmentally unhealthy. plus i dont see how even the most diehard collector will want to display all their 999999 amiibos. what could have been a cool "buy a premium mario trophy to unlock lots of stuff, and show off your friends the mario, samus, link, dk and others sitting on your mantle" became just trash. just sell us the digital code and i respect you a tiny bit more.

It would be nice if Amiibos would pack as much content as usual DLC does.....but sadly they don't offer much value while constantly locking out consumers from vital gaming Functionality as such the one described on this article.

Well.. it would be an exciting gimmick if you collected amibos for sure. This news is not that concerning for me, a die hard Zelda fan that has played every title (many multiple times) but would never play through Skyword Sword again. A repetitive slog of a game lacking all the charm of even gameboy Zeldas. If you enjoy it, that is awesome Im happy for you I truly am. I consider Twilight Princess the greatest Zelda so SS was extremely disappointing for me coming off of that.

I'll continue to use the Switch as my portable VN/games of last gen machine because its portability is just so great, but I just... why? It's a feature in the game. Don't lock a feature behind a paywall of any kind in your full price game, ever. If you do, you're telling your customer one of two things. A: this feature is great, and your purchase of the product isn't enough for you to deserve it. Or B: this feature is useless, but we hope it'll still help to goad you into buying this other thing besides the game.

Just have the plastic toys be plastic toys, and the games be games. If you want to have some sort of feature overlap... I dunno, make the toys give you a free heart refill (as in, a single heart) once every ten minutes... that's so useless it barely even counts as a bonus feature.
