Longtime PlayStation-Exclusive Baseball Series The Show 21 Is Coming To Xbox Series X With Cross-Play

MLB The Show is no longer exclusive to PlayStation.

In a big shakeup for the world of sports video games, it has been announced that Sony's long-time PlayStation-exclusive baseball series, The Show, is coming to Xbox consoles.

This is not entirely out of left field, however, as it was confirmed back in 2019 that the exclusivity for PlayStation was ending, with the first multiplatform release penciled in for 2021 at the soonest. Now we know it's happening with MLB The Show 21, which has 22-year-old San Diego Padres shortstop phenom Fernando Tatis Jr. on the cover as the leaks suggested. The game is scheduled to release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S on April 20, 2021.

It's also been confirmed that MLB The Show carries a premium price tag on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, as it will cost $70 USD on the next-gen systems. The PS4/Xbox One edition is $60 USD.

Regarding the expansion to Xbox, Sony San Diego's Ramone Russell said in a blog post that it's all about bringing in new players.

"This is a very exciting moment for all of us as the storied franchise will be accessible to more gamers than before," Russell said. "We would like to thank everyone at PlayStation, Xbox, Major League Baseball, Major League Baseball Players Association and the San Diego Studio for working diligently to bring MLB The Show to more users."

People were hoping that the end of exclusivity for PlayStation might mean The Show would also release on Nintendo Switch--heck, Nintendo even tweeted about it--but there was no mention today of a Nintendo edition of the baseball game.

Sony has also confirmed that MLB The Show 21 will feature cross-play with PlayStation and Xbox, while there will also be cross-progression support, but only from PS4 to PS5, it seems.

Sony also noted that there will be no way to upgrade from the standard edition to next-gen at no extra cost. "If you are interested in having access to the game on both current and next gen platforms, please wait for more info about the collector’s edition," Sony said. The collector's edition will be announced this Wednesday.

Xbox marketing boss Aaron Greenberg said on Twitter that Microsoft had been working with Sony for some time on this announcement. He also said MLB The Show 21 is launching for Xbox on April 20, which is about a month after it releases on PS4 and PS5.

This is a very big change, as it marks the first time in nearly a decade that Xbox fans are getting a proper simulation baseball game. 2K Sports benched its MLB 2K series after MLB 2K13, with the company instead putting its efforts into the very popular NBA 2K series.

The RBI Baseball series is an officially licensed baseball game that has been available on Xbox and Nintendo platforms in recent years, but it is a budget-priced arcade-style game.

This move makes sense. It is the only baseball simulator franchise out there. Of course Sony going to capitalize on it. People keep saying that the MLB was going to pull out from allowing Sony to keep making the franchise. I doubt it. Sony wants more people to join its ecosystem. Since baseball is an "American pastime," it will give Xbox users a chance to see what they are missing out on by not having a PlayStation. Sony has nothing to lose in this situation. Sony is the only game in town when it comes to simulator baseball, so the company will make money hand over fist. They will make money from all the xbox users and get some people to buy into PlayStation to see what other the internal studios have been putting out.

@laurenriley3332: I don't think this was Sony's decision. It's far more likely based on previous info that the MLB forced their hand on this (probably a case where Sony was told that if they wanted to renew the license they needed to make the game multiplatform). Yes it'd agree it's a good move I'm just saying I don't think Sony would be willing to do it regardless without that pressure from the MLB.

Not that I play sports sims, but it's always a sad day when PlayStation loses an exclusive franchise.

@fellsorcerer: probably has more to do with MLB wanting to have a real baseball game. they paid some developer to put out that crap sim (2000 teens year) game, sold it for 20 bucks and still no one played.

@naydazng7: Your comment makes zero sense. The game is still going to be the same just on 2 consoles.........

@philip6k: I think you missed the idea of what they were saying. The MLB pushed Sony into making this multiplatform likely in part due to their own attempt at a baseball video game (RBI Baseball) continually being lackluster. The previous poster didn't say anything against MLB the Show

It makes sense. No one really owns the series x and this gen's war is already over so why pay for the rights.

@philip6k: They are still paying for the rights. They are still the only ones making an official baseball game (other than RBI which is a special circumstance given that team is directly owned by the MLB). So they still have and are paying for the exclusive license to make and sell MLB video games.

Man I hope they don't hide behind "we needed to adapt production around the Microsoft consoles", that's why graphics are mediocre and the gameplay feels the same as last year. I say this because they have released the same game for the past 5 years, so my expectations are considerable now that they have more horsepower at their disposal.

@kutraz: It's a yearly release sports title. If you are expecting them to rebuild the entire game from scratch every year then I'd say that's more on you having unrealistic expectations than them. As far as sports games go I'd say that the MLB the Show team do a pretty good job. Every release always works to fix, improve, and/or add new aspects to the game. No they aren't reinventing the wheel with it but they do put in a good amount of effort in trying to keep improving the game with each iteration.

@phoenix1289:

I see it different, 60 dollars for a few tweaks each year is BS to me but it's a business and there are obviously people like you who will hand over the money.

With that said, my expectations are at an all-time high because of the new hardware. I just hope they don't use "Xbox" or "cross-platform" as an excuse if they fail to impress.

The only way I learn the rules of American sports is by playing pc games. I've learned American football and hockey. Just need baseball now.

I for one am more than ok with this. More players to match with and more money coming in should mean faster matching, better skilled based matching, and better and faster updates.

It's official. Sony wants $70 to be the standard price for gen 9 games. Sheep gamers will happily lap it up.

When it comes to gamers doing the smart self beneficial thing, always bet on the under.
