Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers 4K Steelbook Edition Is Up For Preorder
The Two Towers Limited Edition Steelbook arrives May 27 alongside a reprint of Fellowship of the Ring's Steelbook.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is getting a 4K Limited Edition Steelbook on May 27. The upcoming standalone release of the second movie in Peter Jackson's acclaimed adaptation follows on the heels of The Fellowship of the Ring's Limited Edition Steelbook release in January. Fellowship is receiving a reprint on the same day, so you can preorder both right now.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Steelbook Collection is also back in stock at Walmart for $175. You can pair the box set edition with a matching collection of Jackson's Hobbit Trilogy for $170.
The Lord of the Rings Steelbook Editions
- LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring Steelbook (4K, Digital) -- $28 (
$35) | Also at Gruv - LOTR: The Two Towers Steelbook (4K, Digital) -- $30
- The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Steelbook Box Set (4K) -- $175 | Also at Amazon
- The Hobbit Trilogy: Steelbook Box Set (4K) -- $170 (
$175)
It's worth noting that a box set containing all six of Jackson's Tolkien adaptations launched in March and is on sale right now at Walmart and Amazon. The Middle-earth 6-Film Collection is discounted to $167 at Walmart and $179 at Amazon (was $210). Notably, this box set is the only release that also contains three formats of the theatrical and extended cuts: 4K Blu-ray, the 1080p Blu-ray remastered editions, and digital copies. Audio commentaries are exclusive to the 1080p Blu-ray discs.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 4K Steelbook (Walmart Exclusive)
$28 (was $35) | Releases May 27
This is the same version and steelbook of The Fellowship of the Ring included in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Steelbook Collection, which received a reprint in March and is in stock at Walmart for $175.
The Fellowship of the Ring Steelbook originally released on January 7 and has sold out multiple times since. Orders placed on or after April 1 are technically preorders, as Walmart/Gruv are releasing reprint on May 27 to coincide with the launch of The Two Towers Steelbook.
Unlike The Lord of the Rings Steelbook Trilogy, the standalone 4K release of Fellowship also includes the digital version of the first film in the trilogy. You'll get theatrical and extended versions of Fellowship of the Ring in both formats.
The Lord of the Rings is almost always packaged as a trilogy on 4K Blu-ray. You won't find 4K or even standard Blu-ray editions of the individual movies at major retailers, so the fact that these budget-friendly steelbooks exist remains a bit of a surprise.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 4K Steelbook (Walmart Exclusive)
$30 | Releases May 27
Once again, The Two Towers Limited Edition Steelbook is the same as the one that comes with the The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Steelbook Box Set. But just like with The Fellowship of the Ring, you'll get 4K Blu-ray and digital versions of The Two Towers with the standalone release.
The upcoming standalone release of The Two Towers includes the theatrical and extended cuts of the second movie in Peter Jackson's beloved trilogy.
At the moment, The Two Towers is only available to preorder from Gruv for $30, but we expect Walmart to unlock preorders soon.
It seems like only a matter of time before The Return of the King gets a standalone release in Limited Edition Steelbook format.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Limited Edition Steelbook Collection (4K Blu-ray)
$175
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Steelbook Box Set received a reprint in March, and surprisingly it's in stock at Walmart at the moment for its $175 retail price. The box set is sold out at Amazon, but it is available from resellers for around the same price. That said, you'll want to order from Walmart because your copy of the box set will be sold and shipped directly from the Walmart.
Compared to the standalone releases, the box set sounds quite pricey these days, especially since you miss out on digital versions of the film. The main draw here is the steelbook display case, which is admittedly pretty awesome.
That said, if The Return of the King gets a standalone Limited Edition Steelbook release, you'll be able to snag steelbooks for all three films for less than $100--a massive difference from the pricey box set version.
The Hobbit Trilogy Limited Edition Steelbook Collection (4K Blu-ray)
$170 (was $175)
Peter Jackson's The Hobbit Trilogy also has a Limited Edition Steelbook box set. Unsurprisingly, The Hobbit Trilogy has never been as popular as LOTR, so this one typically isn't as difficult to find in stock for around retail price. But if you want to get steelbook editions of all six of Peter Jackson's Middle-earth films, you can grab this box set for $170 from Amazon.
It's unclear if The Hobbit films will ever receive standalone steelbook releases. For now, the only way to get a 4K edition of any of the three Hobbit films with a steelbook case is to pick up the box set.
Like The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Steelbook, this set only comes with 4K Blu-ray editions of each film, but you will get the theatrical and extended cuts of each.
