The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is now available in physical format. The anime released on 4K UHD Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray on February 18. Three different editions are up for grabs, including the Limited Edition Steelbook, which includes 4K and 1080p discs as well as a voucher to redeem a digital copy. Amazon currently has The War of the Rohirrim's Steelbook Edition in stock for $40. Walmart is sold out, so it's certainly possible Amazon will run out of copies soon, too.

The War of the Rohirrim released in theaters December 13 and arrived on digital storefronts just two weeks later. The film failed to reach $10 million at the box office, which likely contributed to the quick digital release. Fan and critic reactions have been mixed; the anime holds a "mixed" Metascore average in both categories on GameSpot sister site Metacritic.

The War of the Rohirrim was created by anime studio Sola Digital Arts. The film is set 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings and took inspiration from Peter Jackson's beloved trilogy of films. Based on an entry in the appendix of The Lord of the Rings, The War of the Rohirrim focuses on the kingdom of Rohan and its ruler Helm Hammerhand--the namesake of Helm's Deep--and the kingdom's war with the Dunlending raiders of Dunedain.

If you want to watch Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings Trilogy before The War of the Rohirrim, the existing 4K Blu-ray box set is on sale for 68 (was $90) at Amazon. You can get The Hobbit Trilogy's 4K Blu-ray box set for $59 (was $90). Alternatively, you can preorder the upcoming Middle-earth 6-Film Collection ahead of its March 18 release. At $191, it's pricier than buying the two existing 4K sets separately, but it does come with 4K and 1080p Blu-ray discs as well as digital copies of each film. This is notable because the standard Blu-ray discs have exclusive special features not found in the 4K trilogy box sets.

Meanwhile, Walmart released an exclusive steelbook edition of The Fellowship of the Ring in January. After initially selling out of preorders, Walmart has restocked the film for $35. If the steelbook looks familiar, that's because it's the same steelbook edition found in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Limited Edition Steelbook Collection that was reprinted last year and promptly sold out. It's unclear if Walmart will also release The Two Towers and The Return of the King individually, too.

Speaking of Lord of the Rings re-releases, the massive 5,471-piece Barad-dur Lego set launched at major retailers in January. Initially released last year as a Lego Store exclusive, the $460 set builds a Sauron's iconic fortress, complete with The Eye of Sauron at the top of the 32-inch Lego structure. Barad-dur joins the similarly large Rivendell model as the only two Lord of the Rings Lego sets currently in production.

The Lord of the Rings 2024 Hardcover Collector's Editions

As mentioned, The War of the Rohirrim is based on the appendices of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien wrote a ton of supplemental stories and histories of Middle-earth while drafting The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. If you want to read The Lord of the Rings (and its appendices) before or after watching The War of Rohirrim, there are some beautiful hardcover editions discounted at Amazon right now.

The 2024 hardcover Collector's Editions of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion. These elegant hardcovers have foil-stamped cover art, stained edges, ribbon bookmarks, and maps of Middle-earth as endpapers. The Collector's Edition splits The Lord of the Rings into its three volumes, which can be purchased individually or as a set. Amazon has The Lord of the Rings Collector's Edition Box Set marked down to only $59.79 (was $105). You can also buy each volume separately and spend roughly the same amount, but you'll miss out on the display box and fold-out map. To complete your set of 2024 Tolkien Collector's Editions, check out the matching editions of The Hobbit or The Silmarillion.

Tolkien Illustrated Editions

We'd also highly recommend the Tolkien Illustrated Editions of The Lord of the Rings as well as The Hobbit and The Silmarillion.

The big draw here is that The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Edition contains 30 full-color illustrations by Tolkien, but it's also one of prettiest editions of Tolkien's classic fantasy novel you can buy. It has red-stained edges with Elvish writing, a dust jacket with foil script and a stamped image of The Eye of Sauron. This edition also comes with two fold-out maps and a ribbon bookmark. If you'd rather not pay $47 for a book and want the full story in one volume, Amazon also The Lord of the Rings Deluxe Edition, which has a nice suede-like cover, for just under $20.

The Tolkien Illustrated Editions of The Hobbit and The Silmarillion have the same premium features and aesthetic.
