Lost Planet 3 developer Spark Unlimited Shutting Down -- Report

The "end of Spark as a game developer."

Following a questioning post from gaming forum NeoGaf that uncovered developer Spark Unlimited's office equipment up for auction, company representatives revealed that it would no longer be developing games.

No Caption Provided

"It's the end of Spark as a game developer," former Spark Unlimited CTO John Butrovich told Polygon in a statement. The story also reports that the company has laid off all its employees. All of the company's current project have been canceled, including an in-develoopment free-to-play title, while projects that continue to generate revenue will be shifted to a trustee.

Spark Unlimited is best-known for developing Lost Planet 3, Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, and Call of Duty: Finest Hour.

We've reached out to company representatives for further details about the closure and will update this story with new details as they're made available.

It's always sad when a game company closes their doors, however, these guys really did make some terrible, terrible games...

@Metamania: agreed.

at the risk of sounding old......... it wasn't that long ago this comment section would have been full of comments mirroring yours. regardless of who the dev was. the fact that these comments make up less than a 1/10 of this comment section tells me that our collective goodwill towards the industry has been torched.

@pboontap@Metamania: From my perspective, it just depends on the users of the website posting the news.

I've noticed a butt-ton of just overly negative users at Gamespot, complaining about the dumbest things on almost every article. Coming from IGN, it's an improvement for sure - but still.

"Der Der, Eddie sucks"
"Der Der, this game sucks"
"Der Der, why isn't this free?"
"Der Der, I'm never playing this game because blah"

Anyway, people can be real butts. Whether you liked the developers or not, have some empathy. This was people's (with families, etc) livelihood - good luck to *all* of them.

TL;DR - don't be a whiny complain-y negative-nancy Interwebz

I hate to be harsh here and it sucks for a small company to go out of business but Spark was not a good company because they pretty much made nothing but bad games. The fact that they lasted for 13 years really shocks me that they were able to stick around so long. There are many companies that lasted very shortly then they did so I can't surprised that Spark went down. I'm still surprised they didn't go down years before.

I really hope they try rebooting the series or something. I know Spark didn't make the other 2 LP games, but I really enjoyed each one. I loved the combination of VS mechs and gunplay. I remember how tense LP1 mp matches would be when the epic music played during the minute or so countdown. Then theres the cool pirates that you could customize in 2, with the coop and fun bosses. It has so much potential. (I find myself saying that a lot these days.) Hopefully it isn't completely doom and gloom with that franchise.

@Cloud_imperium: I thought two was pretty fun with friends and if they just refined that and made the story better, 3 couldve been so much more. But with each game they kept changing it too much.

@hordicus: A crash of all AAA studios maybe. Independent ones? Those will thrive and keep the industry afloat.

Lost Planet was a cool idea, but they should've just did one good game and moved on past the "we're in antarctica shooting giant monsters in the orange spots."

I liked the story and combat in Lost Planet 3, also memorable characters, unlike in previous Lost Planet games.

Less than 4 months after they announced they were hiring for that free-to-play game, they must have already known then things were going down, maybe they had hopes but failed to secure some funding.

LP3 wasn't that bad, but it wasn't that good either. The freeroam-ish nature of it between story sections was a bit superfluous, especially when they forced you to walk all the way back through the base to turn in sidequests to the scientist guy. It's worth trying if you can get it for $10 or less on Steam sale or the bargain bin.

I played the demo of Lost Planet 2 and I found it so awesome; it's a shame that the franchise never got improved.

@cboye18: Lost Planet 2 is a great coop game. The lack of it was the reason why I didn't buy LP3.

Yet another one bites the dust. I can't really be too upset as this is a studio that has a hard time going above the 50% mark on Metacritic for anything that isn't Call of Duty, but it sucks to see even more variety on the shelves disappearing.

Its a shame. Those developers can only make what the director wants. Its not their fault that the directors, writers, and art directors of those games were terrible.

@bunchanumbers: uhhh not sure i get what you are saying here. last i checked director, writer, and art director all counted a developer. sure its not the person doing the coding, but i have a feeling that come layoff time that the coder is in the best position to be rehired

@bunchanumbers: it seems developers literally have no control anymore. I wonder how it feels to release a game that is very different than the better version you wanted to develop in the 1st place
