LucasArts closed

[UPDATE] Disney shuts down studio, though Star Wars 1313 could live on through external partnership.

[UPDATE] The GameStop-owned Game Informer magazine has obtained a statement from Disney, confirming LucasArts has been closed.

"After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games," the statement reads.

"As a result of this change, we've had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles."

There may be hope for Star Wars 1313, as the representative told the site that it is looking for external partners to help bring the game to market, though nothing has yet been confirmed.

"It is worth noting that we are looking for proven external partners who can help us provide video games to our fans. We still believe in the video game industry, we still will provide Star Wars games, we're just looking at different models rather than internal production… They're evaluating everything. There's always a possibility that it [Star Wars 1313] can still come out via licensing."

Separately, a Disney representative told GameSpot, "Disney Interactive looks forward to working with Lucasfilm on new games opportunities that leverage their incredible IP and brings it to life across gaming platforms."

The original story follows below.

LucasArts is no more. That's according to a Kotaku source, who said Disney has laid off the company's entire staff and canceled all current projects.

No Caption Provided

The closure took place this morning, the source said, with layoffs estimated to number about 150 people. Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313 were reportedly both canceled.

This news comes after months of speculation about the future of LucasArts, which Disney acquired, alongside LucasFilm, last October for $4.05 billion. When this deal was announced, LucasArts reportedly froze all hiring and announcements.

LucasArts was most recently known for its Star Wars games, but the studio was also responsible for praised adventure games like The Secret of Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, and Day of the Tentacle, among others.

Your later years were no longer as universally respected and glorious as your past, but you will still be remembered, I assure you that much, LucasArts. Farewell...

i won't sit here and say that LucasArts was a premier company, their products definitely ranged from suckass to great, and they were pretty much hogged tied to a license that arguably may have limited their creative potential. But i, along with other true videogame fans out there, view this closing as a loss for the industry as a whole.

LucasArts - you will be missed!!!! RIP!!!

I look forward to seeing what Disney can do with Star Wars. They have some of the brightest and most creative minds on the planet. I definitely can't wait for the new Episode VII movie to come out ~2015. Here's to hoping for some great Star Wars games and movies from Disney!

I know I wouldn't want to work for Lucas Arts. "Make Star Wars games until you die". No thanks. How about people stop buying Star Wars games as Lucas Arts can die.

Nintendo, you're next. Mario and Zelda until the sun explodes? Probably not.

Found this article interesting : http://beta.fool.com/thequast/2013/04/07/why-cancelling-star-wars-1313-is-such-a-good-thing/29180/?source=eogyholnk0000001

Here's some reasons it's a smart move:

  • LucasArt's properties already have a cult-like following. Disney can leverage this to get the most lucrative licensing agreement.
  • Any developer paying a premium for properties like Star Wars or Indiana Jones is going to push the video game's limits to ensure success.
  • Success will result in a no-cost all-profit situation for Disney.
  • Disney can shop smaller properties like Monkey Island and Full Throttle that likely wouldn't be developed if they all stayed in-house.

I think that any change is good, i mean the Star Wars's got so much potential, it should be exploited to its full extent which is something that Lucasarts couldn't do, going for licencing should've been a move done a long time ago.

And to answer the question: Yes i want more Star Wars games, Action Rpgs, FPS, something else that we haven't seen in a while and granted a genre that has become extinct, space combat sims.

I am happy that LucasArts is now close, but I still miss the old LucasArts and feel sad for those that are laid off, because of LucasArts' closure.

I'm torn between my inherent dislike of the acquisition - termination business models, and my acute lack of fucks for a studio who hasn't produced anything worthwhile in over a decade.

Folks, shit like this marks the end of the great age of gaming. Welcome to the waterworld of gaming... Where companies like Activision, EA, and now apparently Disney make horrible decisions and ruin lives. As well as destroy franchises and the hopes and dreams of those wishing for remakes, sequals, prequals even, and all around silliness that is the world of gaming. Do you see it thar on the har-eye-zooon???? IT'S THE SECOND BIG VIDEO GAME CRASH OF 20xx. And before people say oh we have alot of good games out. Guess what, there are an oversaturation of FPS, and crud that you call games, poor idea's such as DRM, and that is sadly pushing the direction for another gaming crash. The only savior is the new IP of Indie Dev. YES FOLKS INDIE GAMES WILL SAVE THE GAMING INDUSTRY, suffice to say they don't oversaturate with crap.

This is heartbreaking. I know they weren't releasing as good and as many games as years past, but as a longtime fan, I always held out hope. I remember frequently visiting their web site and browsing all of their wonderful games. More recently, I wondered "What's LucasArts working on?" and visited their site to not find much. It saddened me.

Many of their great games (and not so great games) were developed by outside studios, even the classic X-Wing / Tie fighter series, so not much changes on that. It's just really unfortunate that they were working in-house on what looked to be a great concept in Star Wars 1313. If that game is completed by another developer, I hope we get to see the LucasArts logo one more time.

There's other Publishing companies that should have recieved this type of fate. I mean really Lucas Art's. In all honesty they gave it a shot for the Xbox, PS2, and GameCube day's but were out done by Capcom's Resident Evil 4 and Microsoft's Halo. You can't blame them for trying.

Hell theirs publisher's that are taking advantage of there name far worse than Lucas Arts did in the end.

I can barely believe this. Really goes against the family friendly appeal Disney push to their customers. It's such a shame for the 150 people out of a job. Secret Weapons Over Normandy is probably still my favourite WWII dog-fighter.

So what does this mean for the games we love, such as Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango?

Hopefully (but unlikely), it means that perhaps Double Fine can buy back the rights to the games that helped put them (or certainly at least guys like Tim Schafer) back on the map.

Sad. Lucasarts had a long time reputation; sure not all of its games were awesome, but why not at least keep the Lucasarts name alive? All they really needed was someone to head the place with some sort of vision on the *proper* game series to continue making (ie. Battlefront, Jedi Knight, X-Wing) -- bring back those old *fun* games!

Sheesh. I have a feeling that this is just the beginning of some terrible decision making. And everyone thought ol' George was bad!

:/ i just remembered all the great games i played when i was a kid... Day Of Tentacle, Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis, full throttle and Dig, i admit i am a big fanboy of all adventure games that lucasarts released.

Besides of all the great adventure games they released, i loved Star Wars Tie Figther, X-wing, X-wing Alliance, Dark Forces and many many other Star Wars games like Kotor.

LucasArts Logo is part of my childhood and it will be missed.

Hopefully they get some developers to get some decent Star Wars games out. Disney is rolling in dough. They bought LucasArts for 4.5 billion. Tell me Disney don't have money. I know they care more about Lucas's film, but their games could be even more huge especially if the films are great too. I don't understand why they fired everyone from LucasArts since there hasn't to be a few knowledgeable folks who could have stayed on board and make great games.

Sucks that folk lost their jobs but I haven't liked any of the LA stuff for a while now and I think the best work associated with the studio for the past decade+ were all titles outsourced to other studios rather than anything they did internally. KOTOR series and Jedi Knight immediately come to mind as titles like that. Going license/external again feels more like a return to form.

LucasArts! No...

I had so much hope that maybe Disney would help it to return to its former glory. But instead, they killed it...

It was by far one of the most innovative companies in its glory days. Now, backstabbed by Mickey Mouse. Who would have thought.
