Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant Lead Oscar Race

The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road have collected the most number of nominations for this year's Academy Awards. The former, a brutal survival thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, collected 12 nominations, while the acclaimed action sequel Fury Road--also starring Hardy-- received 10 nods.

Both films were nominated for Best Picture, while DiCaprio received his fourth nomination for Best Actor. Fury Road's other nominations were predominately in the technical categories, including Cinematography, Sound Editing, and Visual Effects.

Elsewhere, the sci-fi smash The Martian was nominated for Best Picture and star Matt Damon for Best Actor, joining the likes of Michael Fassbender and last year's winner Eddie Redmayne. Cate Blanchett, Brie Larson, and Jennifer Lawrence were among the Best Actress nominees.

Pixar's acclaimed Inside Out was nominated for Best Animated Film. Star Wars: The Force Awakens also received five nominations, including Original Score and Visual Effects.
