Mafia: Definitive Edition Is A Remake, Check Out The First Screenshots

[Update 5/19/2020: Today, 2K Games officially confirmed that Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake of the original game, set for release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on August 28. The original article on the matter from 5/13/2020 below has been modified to reflect the news.]

On May 13, 2K Games teased Mafia Trilogy and stated that a bigger reveal is set for May 19. The short teaser video featured voices from the three main characters in the series, and in-game footage of Vito Scaletta and Lincoln Clay from Mafia 2 and 3, respectively. But what about the original game? Well, screenshots appeared on the Microsoft Store for what's called Mafia: Definitive Edition, and it looked to be a major overhaul. Now, we can confirm that it is indeed a full-on remake.

Mafia: Definitive Edition will cover the original story but has been re-scripted and will include all new scenes and backstories. This overhaul to the first Mafia also sees gameplay overhauls along with new gameplay scenarios. All of this is being done with the tech that Mafia III was built on.

The first game in the Mafia series originally hit PC in 2002 with console ports afterward in 2004. At the time, the game was revered for its cinematic approach to storytelling and an open world that portrayed a believable Chicago-inspired city in the 1930s called Lost Heaven. It was a crime drama centered around Italian mobsters and you played as a young goon named Tommy Angelo, who was coming up in the criminal underworld.

Many of the original game's stylings and mechanics are outdated, of course. With the screenshots that popped up, we now know that how significant of an overhaul the Mafia 1 remake will be. You can check out all the screenshots of Mafia: Definitive Edition above.

This wasn't the only Mafia-related reveal that leaked out of the Microsoft Store from the May 13 announcement; Mafia II: Definitive Edition also cropped up there. However, that game and Mafia III: Definitive Edition are now available, both having launched alongside the official reveal of the Mafia 1 remake.
