Mario Kart Tour Becomes Nintendo's Biggest Mobile Launch Yet

The kart racer hit 90 million downloads in a week.

It's been a week since Mario Kart Tour rolled out on iOS and Android devices, and despite some egregious microtransactions, it's already proving to be a big hit for Nintendo. The game amassed a record-breaking 10.1 million downloads on launch day, and now that number has climbed to 90 million, mobile analytics tracker Sensor Tower reports.

According to Sensor Tower, that makes Mario Kart Tour Nintendo's fastest mobile game launch to date. By comparison, the previous game to hold that distinction, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, hit 14 million downloads in its first week, while Super Mario Run garnered 13 million (although unlike the other two titles, players had to spend $10 to unlock everything beyond Super Mario Run's first three levels).

Sensor Tower shares some other interesting data on how Mario Kart Tour is faring. Thus far, it seems the game is more popular on Android than iOS devices, accounting for nearly 60% of its downloads. However, iOS owners have spent far more money on the game; more than 75% of its gross revenue comes from the App Store. The US leads in terms of downloads and revenue.

According to Sensor Tower, Mario Kart Tour has grossed more than $12 million in its first week on the market. However, Nintendo's most successful mobile game is still far and away Fire Emblem Heroes. Since it launched back in early 2017, the title has generated more than $618 million. Pocket Camp currently sits at second with $111 million in revenue, while Dragalia Lost is close behind at $106 million.

Mario Kart Tour's first Tour event is still live, and it offers a chance to unlock two special characters: Pauline and Musician Mario. Since which Mario kart is more important how many opponents you hit and combos you make than actually get to the finish line first? Or this is new in Mario kart tour? This whole concept of a racing game sucks.

@pingochos: Finishing first still awards you the most points technically....but the point system gives more incentive to repeat courses over and over. It allows Nintendo to make levels out of the courses. It also adds more gameplay and allows players who might not be able to place in the Top 3 a reason to improve their scores. I like it. I've been a Mario Kart fanatic since Mario Kart DS and played the SNES Mario Kart when it was released in 1992 so......I'm having a pretty fun time with it and I haven't spent one dime unlocking so much by skill alone. :)

@justincoool: I got your point im also played mario kart in super nintendo (best game ever) and also in N64, yes is fun to replay a game till you beat the score but the fact that you need like 70% luck over skill (2 frenzee in one race) also rest a lot of the entertainment to the game it is more who can repeat a stage over and over till it gets enought luck, i hope the multiplayer version will give the best price only to the one that finishes the race first. (apologies for my english is not my native language). by the way this is my user 0114 0888 4952 i would love to race with a veteran like me hahaha
