Mario No Longer Voiced By Longtime Actor Charles Martinet--Including In Mario Wonder

Martinet is "stepping back" from voicing Mario and transitioning into a new role.

For decades, Charles Martinet voiced the iconic video game character Mario in Nintendo's popular series, but those days are now over. Nintendo has announced that Martinet, who rose to a new level of fame with 1996's Super Mario 64, is transitioning into the role of "Mario Ambassador." The company also confirmed with GameSpot that Martinet will not voice the character in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

In its initial statement, Nintendo said Martinet will be "stepping back from recording character voices for our games." However, Martinet will "continue to travel the world sharing the joy of Mario and interacting with you all." Notably absent from that statement was any indication about Martinet's involvement with this year's big new Mario game.

When asked about whether Martinet would voice Mario in the upcoming Mario Wonder, Nintendo told GameSpot, "While Charles is not involved in the game, we're excited to honor his legacy and contributions, including looking ahead to what he'll be doing as a Mario Ambassador." This had previously been a topic of some discussion, as the game's reveal led some fans to wonder if Martinet had been replaced, due to subtle changes in the performance.

As for who will now voice Mario (or the many others typically voiced by Martinet), Nintendo said, "Character voice actors will be credited in the game credits, so please wait for the game to be released."

Nintendo also stated that it will have a "special video message" to share from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Martinet to come "at a future date." It added, "It has been an honor working with Charles to help bring Mario to life for so many years and we want to thank and celebrate him."

Sharing his own statement, Martinet wrote, "My new adventure begins! You are all Numba One in my heart!" He added his iconic voice line "woohoo" as a hashtag in his statement.

Martinet has voiced Mario for decades. In addition to Mario, Martinet voices Wario, Luigi, Waluigi, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi, among other roles in the wider Nintendo universe.

Martinet's voice and performance as Mario is iconic and memorable, which is part of the reason why people got upset that Mario would be voiced by Chris Pratt in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Martinet had a cameo in the movie, though, lending his voice to Mario and Luigi's father.

In addition to his voiceover roles, Martinet acted in the live-action movie Nine Months starring Hugh Grant. He also appeared in 1997's The Game, which starred Michael Douglas and Sean Penn.

I'll miss him in the role, but it will be interesting to see what Nintendo does moving forward with Mario's voice.

There’s an online rumor (huge grain of salt) that Martinet will not be replaced by another actor but rather Nintendo will use AI to generate Mario’s voice.

If true, that’s likely the beginning of the end of voice acting in video games. Corporations are greedy, why pay a warm body to stand in a booth with a mic for weeks and months when a computer can do it in hours for free?

@GalvatronType_R: ya I dunno about that. Mario usually only makes / says a handful of sounds / words. It’s not like a character from a fully voiced RPG.

@GalvatronType_R: AI voice will always sound somewhat artificial compared to real people. Honestly, it's not like Mario often does more than grunts and other misc sounds in most games, so they can probably use various sound from previous games if they want to go that route.

@GalvatronType_R: Well, for starters, it's not like voice actors get paid a lot to start with. They barely get pay anything. Most voice actor's walk away with nothing more than a few thousand dollars. If there's a reason, it's clearly not money. Yes, Ai will be more convenient and easier and less time consuming. But maybe there are other reasons. like his voice has changed and age will eventually do that to each and every one of us, to a point where he can no longer do the voices good enough to continue doing it. Maybe he just doesn't wanted do it anymore.

I just hope this is decision that he made and if this is his way of going into retirement then he has totally deserved it! However if this was a choice that was made for him, AKA NINTENDO, shame on whoever pushed him out.

By the way, Chris Pratt was terrible voicing him in the movie. Don't know what they were thinking when they hire him to do his voice.

@angrycreep: He doesn't wanted to do it any more? I doesn't wanted you to assign arbitrary value judgements based on childhood nostalgia and treat them as gospel.

Martinet did fine for a silly, cartoonish voice for Mario. He's not a particularly talented actor. And Pratt did just fine. He ditched the over-the-top Italian stereotypes and delivered a performance with enough subtlety to surprise me. I'm sorry you hate Chris Pratt and Jesus and America.

@id0ntkn0w7: Martinet did way better than just fine. HE did an excellent job and brought to live what used to be a silent lovable kid's character to live.

Martinet wasn't a regular actor, so he probably wouldn't have been able to do a full movie, but he still would have preferred to see him try to do the voice than Pratt.

Most people would have preferred someone else to have voiced Mario in the movie, rather than Chris Pratt. Even if it was not Martinet.

@angrycreep: it was corny. It was acceptable considering we weren't really used to a lot of talking in games at all at that point, and it is after all a cartoon. But there are much better voice actors in cartoons. Martinet is no Mel Blanc or Kenny (whats-his-name) of Spongebob, Power Puff Girls and Mr. Show fame, Seth McFarlane etc. It was fine for a mid-90's video game, really no better than Peach, who sounded like a dog just got ahold of his squeak toy. At least Peach didn't engage in racial stereotypes.

But hey, spelun-key, Bowsie!

And you still haven't explained why you hate Jesus

@id0ntkn0w7: Did you know that Charles Martinet was actually a voice character in the movie? I didn't know that, i thought he had nothing to do in the movie. Well he was part of the movie, and he actually did the voice of Mario's dad in the movie. That Beg's the question why they didn't let him do the Mario voice, even if he had to make some changes to his Mario voice for the movie. The answer is plain and simple, they wanted a big Hollywood super star to do the voice in the movie and bring in the cash, and

Charles Martinet was not that.

@angrycreep: I did. I recognized that corny, silly racist caricature when he turned around and said the line from 64 at the arcade. You are arguing in favor of someone playing a role using a voice that showed up multiple times in a movie you watched and didn't recognize, someone whom you said probably couldn't pull off an entire movie requiring a range of emotion and, you know, more than a sleeptalking list of pastas (you were right), someone you said everyone preferred but also someone you said that the studio did NOT think everyone preferred because they wanted a big celebrity.

He plays multiple characters in a movie for which you agree he couldn't pull off playing the lead. Why are you making all of my points for me and telling me I'm wrong?

Please answer in large, bold text. I enjoy it when somebody drops my mic for me

@id0ntkn0w7:

I don't know if you were paying attention. well, I didn't exactly said that i agree he couldn't pull off playing the lead., i clearly said that he probably would not have been able to do it. I use the word (PROPBALY). The word (Probably) means that he may or may not have been able to do it.

The reason why i use the word Probably, was because i thought all he does is small voice samples and nothing major like that. I didn't know that has done bigger things than that, so i was unsure about it.

I also said that I would have preferred to see someone else do the voice of Mario, even if it wasn't Charles Martinet but someone other than Chriss Pratt.

It was never going to happen. Like i stated before, when you are doing a big movie like that, you want a big Hollywood super star as the lead voice and someone that will help sell your product. Chales was not that and Pratt was that. Is just that they pick the wrong person with Chriss Pratt. There are other Hollywood stars out there, that most likely would have been able to do a better job than Pratt.

@angrycreep: yeah, I must've missed all of the subtle nuance in what you didn't exactly said.

I feel like an eight-year-old is arguing with me in defense of a political party. Amd the kid is drunk. Tell me more about this prop baily, please.

And you prefer Criss Angel for the role. That's certainly odd.

@angrycreep: the little things, like you feigning outrage over the possibility, in your mind, of the guy who played multiple characters in the movie, being "forced out," like you saying a guy who's been in major motion pictures is not a "regular actor," so even though he probably couldn't succeed, they should've cast him anyway, because he maybe could even though probably not, your unqualified disdain for Pratt's voice acting, your condescending even as you struggle to form a coherent sentence, or your feeble attempt at an insult with your latest, "Naa naa ur a kkid."

I think I grasped those things just fine. I also presented thoughtful reasons for my opposition to your suggestions. You ignored some of them, most especially the one about trafficking in racist stereotypes.

Well that's kind of a bummer. I know folks weren't too excited about Chris Pratt voicing the movie but Martinet's version wouldn't have worked. I liked the game voice though. I hope he got paid well.

@ives74: It COULD have worked if they made the movie more like the games, where Mario is largely a silent protagonist, with a few quips and exclamations here and there. Also Martinet could have toned it down a bit to make it more palatable for general audiences. After all he does a LOT of voice work beyond Mario. For example, did you know he voiced Paarthurnax the dragon in Skyrim?

@Akriel_Boulve: So if they made a completely different movie than the one they released, which made 1.3 billion, to make a movie in which the main character can't deliver dialog because their voice actor is confined to a bunch of high pitched noises? Yeah I don't think that would have worked.

@ives74: What did mario say in the movie that was of any actual substance? I liked the movie but all of his dialogue was essentially unnecessary and could have been relegated to those around him providing expositional dumps, which they were already doing anyways. I think Peach had more lines of dialogue than mario.

@Akriel_Boulve: Not the point. The movie they made had dialog that had to be delivered. If we have to create hypotheticals to explain why Martinet possibly could have worked we're just spinning our wheels here.

@ives74: Except that IS the point. The dialog that mario specifically said was inconsequential and could have been pared down so that others could do the speaking, just like they do in the games, including the MarioRPG and Paper Mario franchises which have a lot of dialogue, but no talking Mario.

The reason I'm spinning the hypothetical is because you made the positive claim that the movie would NOT work with an effectively silent Mario other than his trademark catch phrases. I pointed out how it COULD work, and HAS worked in the past in the video games, some of which were wildly popular and getting contemporary remakes. You don't have a proper counter so you're trying to deflect.

@Akriel_Boulve: but WHAT you DON'T seem to GET is they construct the MOVIE before EXECUTING it. They wrote the SCRIPT and needed that dialog DELIVERED. You're not just SUGGESTING they use a different VOICE actor. You're saying the entire MOVIE should have been different when what they MADE was a huge SUCCESS. You don't like it and that's fine. They'll be adapting Zelda into a movie. Will you be expecting Link to do nothing but make gasping noises? That only works in games.

@ives74: You're one of those people who can't actually engage with hypotheticals I've read about aren't you? Can you tell me how you would have felt yesterday if you didn't eat breakfast?

In any case, you said that they couldn't have made a successful Mario movie with a silent protagonist. I presented the case that this is not necessarily true with a viable alternative that could have worked as a hypothetical. However you are dead fixated on the actual script that was written and that this reality MUST be maintained, thus failing to even engage with the hypothetical.

Are you aware of the Netflix live action One Piece adaptation? The mangaka retained massive authority on the production to ensure that it accurately portrayed his story. This meant that at a number of points he forced a rewriting of the script and a reshooting of several scenes until it met with his approval. This could have easily been the case with Mario, considering that Nintendo was taking a gamble with the movie. The fact that they surrendered so much control was probably a distancing tactic so they could ignore the failure more easily, like they did with that 90's Mario Movie, but I digress. The point is that they could have exercised similar controls on their IP if they wanted to DESPITE the existence of the script.

Also I reject the notion that you would have to make massive changes to the script to have Mario be a mostly silent protagonist. I've stated this several times and you haven't refuted it. Just have other people exposit for him like they do in Paper Mario, and make judicious use of pantomime.

Lastly, I've stated several times that I was ok with the movie, but sad that they chose to ax the Mario voice we all know and love in unceremonious fashion as they did.
