Mark Wahlberg playing Nathan Drake

Max Payne star re-collaborating with Fighter director on big-screen version of Uncharted; Pesci, De Niro being courted.

Two years ago, Mark Wahlberg got the chance to play hard-boiled game antihero Max Payne in the movie of the same name (pictured). Given the film's poor reviews, that honor turned out to be more dubious than not. Now, though, it appears that the Oscar-nominated actor will be getting another chance to portray an iconic game character--Nathan Drake, hero of the Uncharted series.

Mark Wahlberg is going from Max Payne to Nathan Drake.
Mark Wahlberg is going from Max Payne to Nathan Drake.

Speaking with MTV, Wahlberg said he was hoping to film the big-screen adaptation of Naughty Dog's game this coming summer. The project is being written and directed by David O. Russell, a frequent collaborator of Wahlberg's. The pair has worked together on such films as the Gulf War action-dramedy Three Kings, the existential comedy I Heart Huckabees, and the upcoming boxing drama The Fighter.

"David is writing [the script] now, and David is one of the best writer-directors I've ever worked with," Wahlberg said. "And the idea that he has is just insane. … It's not going to be the watered-down version; that's for sure."

Wahlberg also revealed some potential casting for the Uncharted film, which points to a loose adaptation of the game. Russell is apparently writing two roles--that of Drake's father and uncle--with two specific actors in mind. The former part is apparently being offered to Robert de Niro, with the latter being tailor made for Joe Pesci. Neither character appears in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune or its sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Don't really think this will work. Unlike wahlberg, mr.drake doesn't sound like he's always out of breath whenever he speaks.

We saw Mark could be a tiny bit more dynamic in the other guys, but I have my doubts on whether he can pull this off.

Max Payne and now Nathan Drake. By a guy who doesn't give a **** about video games. Please don't **** this one up too! Not saying Marky's role in Max Payne was bad but the movie on a whole was a huge disappointment to me as a fan of the games. Get a good writer and director for a change!

Nolan North should absolutely be given this role, Mark Wahlberg is one of those actors that seems like he might be cool to hang out with, but just not good in acting roles. I did like Boogie nights but his role wasn't to be taken too seriously. Three kings was also a good movie, but again he was kind of cheesy. He's like Johnny Depp, never great..always mediocre...yet somehow wildly popular. I say if they want this movie to make any sort of financial return or fan base they'll stick with the real Nathan Drake and not a singer who still thinks he can act his way out of a paper bag!

My concerns are with adding his uncle and father in the story. What about Sully? They could add him. Walhberg is a hit and miss actor for me, but I am more concerned about these changes to the story as opposed to his casting.

Well, that it should've been Nathan Fillion instead is pretty much the consensus by now, but that aside, I think it's way more important that David O. Russell get the "ping pong" dialog right. The story of Uncharted 2 was perhaps not the most imaginative, but that didn't really matter, because the characters and the way they interacted was just so superb. It pretty much made the story. Like when Drake and Tenzin made their way through the huge cave; they don't speak each other's language, but just hearing and watching them communicate made the game such a great and immersive experience. If they get that part right, and if they can somehow "translate" the totally (ironically) cinematic experience of the games to the big screen, then it could become first really great game-to-movie adaptation, and possibly the next generation Indiana Jones franchise.

Well, I won't right it off quite yet, but yes Nathan Fillion would have been perfect. Max Payne just wasn't that great a movie, Mark Wahlberg didn't really contribute much to the numerous problems it had, so I'm not going to hold that against him. However, I've yet to see him play someone with the kind of intelligent charm that Drake has--he was awesome in The Departed, but that was a totally different kind of character. I hope he has the range, because I think Uncharted is the best chance a video game will have for a while of making a really good movie.

I honestly don't think this will work. But, I am not a casting director, I am just a passionate fan who has fully played both games and is eagerly awaiting the third. Nathan Fillon looks, and sounds like Drake. Mark Walhbergs voice isn't right for the part either. I hate to sound like a whiny punk, but I am tired of Hollywood mucking up my favorites. / Protest +1

They can do whatever they want with this film as along as they don't rush out Uncharted 3 or base the game from this new film.

Dont get me wrong here Mark Wahlberg is an awesome action star, but unless this movie is chock full of action sequences, I'd rather see Ryan Reynolds playing Nathan Drake cause he's really funny. Mark can't do humor, and Nathan Drake is very sarcastic whenever he's in a dire situation which really lightens the mood in the Uncharted series.

Nathan Fillion would be great I agree. But ever since the opening scene of Uncharted 1 I thought Joe Flanigan (<< LINK REMOVED >>) would be the perfect fit for Nathan Drake.

Well that's that. I won't be seeing this movie. I hated Markie Mark in Max Payne and there's no reason to believe he'd do well in Uncharted.

@athenian29 I totally agree - it should be Nolan North. It's his voice, he's an actor, AND he really looks like Nathan Drake. But, most people don't know who he is, so they went with a box office draw.

NO Could they POSSIBLY have picked anybody worse? Wahlberg is stiff as a board! Hell, they should've picked Nolan North - THAT would've been faithful to the source material! /boycott

yes indeed, it should have been Nathan Fillion hands down, he not only looks similar to Nathan Drake, but he has the humor/sarcasm down. Maybe he wasn't available for filming now that his Castle TV series is taking off... Too bad, I interviewed Fillion a while back and he's an awesome guy.

Comments about how Fillion was such a better pick over Wahlberg aside .. the fact that they're creating their own plot and not giving a crap about the actual game with its stories deserves a good ol' *Facepalm* I mean really ? ... Dad ? .. Uncle ?

I can't see him playing a more "positively playful and cocky" about dangerous situations, which is what Drake was about.

Wahlberg is a really good actor (along with the amazing pairing of De Niro and Pesci), but I'm not sure if he can hold up the comedic aspects of Nathan Drake. Nathan Drake is charmingly stupid at times and comes across as an Indiana jones type. He is funny because he always seems out of place in the treasure hunts he is on. I hope Wahlberg can pull it off, but I am concerned.
