Marvel Rivals Devs Laid Off Despite The Game's Huge Success

NetEase is reportedly pulling back on game development.

Several Marvel Rivals developers at NetEase Games have been laid off, according to the game's director, Thaddeus Sasser.

Over on LinkedIn, Sasser said, "My stellar, talented team just helped deliver an incredibly successful new franchise in Marvel Rivals for NetEase Games...and were just laid off!" All six of Marvel Rivals' America-based devs were reportedly let go, two of whom were level designers.

These layoffs in particular come as a surprise given that Marvel Rivals has been incredibly successful and popular since its launch in December. During its first 72 hours on the market, Marvel Rivals hit 10 million players worldwide. The number doubled the following week to 20 million players.

Marvel Rivals is among the top five games in the United States across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox Series X|S. It's also one of the very few live-service games that has broken through the oversaturated genre, so the layoffs are puzzling. GameSpot contacted NetEase for comment on the decision and received the following statement:

"We recently made the difficult decision to adjust Marvel Rivals’ development team structure for organizational reasons and to optimize development efficiency for the game. This resulted in a reduction of a design team based in Seattle that is part of a larger global design function in support of Marvel Rivals. We appreciate the hard work and dedication of those affected and will be treating them confidentially and respectfully with recognition for their individual contributions.

We want to reassure our fanbase that the core development team for Marvel Rivals, which continues to be led by Lead Producer Weicong Wu and Game Creative Director Guangyun Chen in Guangzhou, China, remains fully committed to delivering an exceptional experience. We are investing more, not less, into the evolution and growth of this game. We’re excited to deliver new super hero characters, maps, features, and content to ensure an engaging live-service experience for our worldwide player-base."

While NetEase Games isn't closing entirely and Marvel Rivals is continuing to add new playable characters, NetEase is reportedly massively scaling back on video games, especially single-player ones. The timing is especially egregious since NetEase recently revealed that the other two Fantastic Four characters, The Human Torch and The Thing, are joining the roster later this week.

The Swedish studio Liquid Swords also laid off developers this week due to prioritizing "long-term sustainability." The studio was founded by former Avalanche Studios CCO Chistofer Sundberg in 2020, and has yet to release its first title.

Super disgusting seeing all these comments defending this. "it's just business" is the excuse corporations use to treat human being like office supplies.

Of people help build your success, you should support them, even when it's not the maximally profitable decision. Because that's how you EARN loyalty and trust and repeat success. That's how you get people on your team who are willing to take risks and stick through the hard times.

When you show your employees and customers that you don't see them as people worth protecting, just number worth min maxxing, you deserve nothing but failure.

What a shame that we have created a culture where working people celebrate the exploitation of other working people. When the ax comes for you, I hope others are more willing to support you than yall were here.

@bobblehead875: It all goes back to 1913.

In 1913, the Dodge brothers sued Ford Motor Company, known as "Dodge v. Ford," because Henry Ford decided to significantly increase employee wages and reduce dividend payouts to shareholders, essentially prioritizing worker benefits over maximizing profit for investors like the Dodge brothers, who were minority shareholders in the company; this legal action is often cited as a landmark case establishing the principle of "shareholder primacy" in corporate law, meaning companies are primarily obligated to maximize profits for their shareholders.

Six people in the US being cut from a Chinese company is a lot less dramatic than the headline made it seem

This means they've invested as much in the game as they intend to and now it's keeping it alive to get as much profit from it until it's no longer worth the effort.

The latest example showing corporations do not care about employees. We are all just a disposable row on a spreadsheet to them.

But as an explanation, whoever owns the IP and made this decision likely knows that life service games are generally flash in the pan 15 minutes of fame temporary fads so they likely cut overhead and other costs prior to player count inevitably crashing so they could cash out and run back to their yachts.

If these are contract workers, well, that's sort of standard policy to let them go. Game development is a pretty ruthless career and many people are hired on for a set amount of time.

With that said, this game always seemed too good to be true in terms of its success, and you know what they say about things that are too good to be true.

We will see what the future holds but the publisher likely has data we don't, and this might be forecasting a loss for them in the near future if they're taking actions like this.

Then again, maybe the level designers' work was done and they didn't need to be retained.

@mrbojangles25: Afaik that isn't what falls under the term layoff, so is it actual non-contracted employees being laidoff or is gamespot and journalists misrepresenting? Layoffs are also a cyclic restructuring of the company or development team if done correctly. Riot for example has never done a layoff that has improved the state of the game.

@Sound_Demon: I could be wrong, but wouldn't remote workers from another country always be considered contractors? The article also says "all six America-based devs were let go" instead of "laid off", so the language is a bit unclear. Either way, it sounds like NetEase didn't think these six people were needed for the continued development of Rivals.

It would be good to know how many people work on this game in total. Six people sounds like nothing for a big production like this. Also, "two of whom were level designers". What about the four others? I don't use Bluesky, so I can't view that link.

It seems like one of the level designers worked on XDefiant as well, and I remember seeing some questionable art design in that game. Now, this is just speculation, but maybe they weren't willing to cooperate with what China asked of them, and that's why they were let go?

No one is safe. You're either consistently making the company more money than you're worth, or you can see yourself out. No resting on the laurels of previous success no matter how recent.

AI will eventually come for every single job in the world. now, make no mistake, I don't mean it will do as good of a job as humans do (in most cases), but it's still coming for literally everything eventually.

See? This is why Gen Y and Gen Z have the largest amount of apathy for everything out of any generation.

Back in the day when my dad did an outstanding job (He's Gen X) he would be given some neat reward that wasn't a part of his pay. Like a used Big screen TV, or a spare car, or a discount on his apartment's rent [insert "true story meme" here]. Also, it helped you climb the metaphorical ladder better, which my dad did a lot.

When my brother and I do an outstanding job, our job contracts are extended, which is doubly annoying and outright offensive. Because their pretty much saying, "Good job! You might actually be worth the whole contract instead of half." They seem to think they would've been better off without us. And the whole ladder climb is gone unless you're family.

To make it even worse. If you did produce a horrible game or product back then you still kept your job. Now you can make titanic level games and still be handed a pink slip afterward.

Pfft, and they wonder why we disrespect leadership so much.

@illegal_peanut: I don't think trading one extreme for the other is any better. If you're bad at your job, you shouldn't keep your job. But if you do a very good job and they just don't need your talents anymore, they should at least try to create a new need for your talents. For example, keep them hired to work on a new game, if they aren't needed in Rivals anymore.

Keep in mind, letting go of talent is a huge risk for companies, because that talent can then get picked up by other companies, and you might not be able to replace them if they're so talented. Can't exactly make a new profitable game without talent.

Now the question is, if they were so outstanding, why were they let go? Well, we don't know, unfortunately, but it raises a new question: were they outstanding to begin with? Were they cooperative? So many questions, so few answers...

@Bahamagamer: no blessings for the ghouls who laid these people off. And if God wanted to bless people, maybe he should have let them keep their jobs, Far as I can tell, God's not paying attention.

As a kid, my dream was to make video games (particularly for SquareSoft. Yes, SquareSoft. I’m older). I’m so glad I never followed through on that. What a miserable field to work in.

if the game is now in a place where it doesn't need as many developers, why would layoffs be surprising?

@bobblehead875: if you are hired to do a job and you get paid and you do it very successful that's great.

then one day the job is no longer required, what is the business supposed to do? just pay you to stay around because of past success?

but your skill set and success should help land you the next job maybe at another employer

@dushness: But it still needs those devs. It's a live service game. They need to pump content into the game all year round to keep it as a live service.
