Marvel Ultimate Alliance Games' Troubled Ports Are Being Fixed

Players have been angry due to missing DLC and lackluster PC ports.

Activision revealed at Comic-Con in July that it would be re-releasing Marvel Ultimate Alliance and its sequel for PS4, Xbox One, PC, and last week those games were released. Unfortunately, they didn't sport the type of graphical improvements players hoped for given their price tags ($40 each or $60 in a bundle). More importantly, they were also broken in a number of ways, a subject Activision has finally commented on after a week of silence.

Among the technical issues the games experienced were an inability to unlock Achievements on Xbox One (since fixed), missing DLC that was promised to be included, and a variety of PC-specific problems. Those include poor controller support and an inability to remap controls.

No Caption Provided

In a statement shared with GameSpot, Activision said, "Both the standalone and bundled versions of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 feature all of its original DLC. We are still working on making the DLC for the first Marvel Ultimate Alliance available in the coming weeks as a free update for everyone who has purchased the title on these platforms alone or as part of the bundle."

"We're focused on identifying and fixing the issues that have been occurring," it added, though it did not specify what issues it was referring to.

An update for the PC version has been released today "that addresses the audio issues reported by PC players and some of the control issues that PC players have experienced."

Here's what Activision identifies as the "key areas" the patch deals with:

  • Improved controller mapping for multiple controllers to address the Xbox One controller and Xbox 360 controller support issues including the button assignments for the triggers and A button on Windows 10
  • Support for up to four controllers
  • Updates to audio support that should improve the audio and minimize crackling and other issues that some users may have experienced
  • Improved online player invites for Marvel Ultimate Alliance
  • Additional fixes including addressing some issues that could cause players to be desynched or disconnected during online games, adding support for the EULA scroll bar, and UI updates

Given these problems and the lack of many graphic settings, it's no surprise that PC players were particularly angry with the releases. Both have earned a "mostly negative" review average on Steam since launch.

One other gripe players on all platforms have, the game's disappointing visuals, is something that likely won't be changing. As we reported last week when we got our first look at the games, executive producer Mike Jones said, "We wanted these re-releases to be as faithful to the original Ultimate Alliance games as possible--the definitive versions. However, the team did work really hard on improving performance, some UI and graphic enhancements, as well as making the games compatible with modern platform features on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. They play really smooth."

Activision's statement didn't offer an apology, as some fans were likely hoping for. Instead, it concluded by saying, "Thank you for your continued patience as we address these issues."

These games should have been priced at 10 bucks each...at best.

In their day, they were awesome games. But things have progressed much farther, and we can see better looking free to play games these days (Marvel Avengers Alliance 2 and Marvel Future Fight)

If the "Gold" version for Ultimate Alliance 2 had backwards compatibility, this issue could have easily been resolved for Xbox One owners.

I don't see a single reason to purchase for PC, as the same versions have been out for years. And even have mods.

I know it's your money, and you can do what you want with it. That said, if you purchased these games at the state they were in right out of the gate for the insane price, you're an idiot. You're supporting bad business, and it hurts all gamers in the long run.

We wanted these re-releases to be as faithful to the original Ultimate Alliance games as possible

Then why in the hell do I need to buy these versions that are 40 FRIGGEN DOLLARS if they're supposed to be the exact same as the originals anyway?

Ultimate Alliance 2 used on 360 at one point was like 7 dollars at gamestop. After the avengers movie it shot up to 35 because of demand. Craziness

Yep that's GameStop they know when to capitalize on a price hike lol they did they same thing when Sony announced that the PS Moves controllers would work with the PlayStation VR before that announcement they were $9 bucks a piece and could often be found bundled together with the PS3 camera for about $20 now the PS Move controllers are $20 a piece on their own lol.

Surprised that enough people were willing to pay that much for the PC version for this to be a big issue so quickly.

How they even released the games in this state is quite honestly shocking. Lazy developers, or maybe Activision had the developers rush the games instead of taking their time to fix what should be obvious issues with the game. Its insulting that they are even charging full price for this.

Let me just say what everybody already knows. Most game companies have stopped paying QA personnel and testers. They have instead used the paying customers to fix problems for them. They can promise whatever they want, but unless they release a solid stable game, it just a waste of breath.

@lion2447: Fix problems? No. Find problems? Maybe. However I don't think it's that simple. As someone who works in software, I can tell you that unrealistic deadlines are often the reason a title doesn't get as much QA time as it may need. Also, many bugs don't show up in a controlled environment and will only appear out in the wild due to different configurations of hardware and software (this is usually more a PC problem). That said, deciding what is a show stopper and what is a shippable bug to be fixed later is something that happens all the time. Some things you knowingly ship with, thinking they're too infrequent to be a problem to stop the FC process or too small but also too dangerous to mess with so close to release - if the fix may cause bugs elsewhere. Fixes for stuff like that are usually held for service releases/updates that get started on almost as soon as the title has gone gold.

So yeah, it could be that less money is being spent on QA but I feel like it's probably more an issue of not enough time being given for QA or the bugs found being considered at a high level to not be serious enough to be a showstopper if they can be patched in later. DLC for example is usually add-on content that doesn't affect the main gameplay, so something where that may not be functioning correctly could be held for a patch after release. Not ideal, but understandable. With a game like this, where the bulk of the work was just porting to new systems, I can only imagine how short the timeline for completion was. So I feel your anger but this kind of thing is actually kind of normal. Doesn't make it right but I'm no longer surprised by it.

@Teyon: I get that. I've done programming myself for a while and understand how bugs can pop up in unexpected ways. What annoys me is that some companies release games knowingly with bugs and promise to fix it later. Before the advent of constant patches (non-existent with early gen consoles), once a game went gold, there was no going back. A poorly made game could easily crush a company. Nowadays, releasing a bug ridden game is becoming more the norm because it is so easy to fix the game later.

What would make me happy would be a reverse pricing system, where the game starts cheaper out of the gate and gets more expensive a month or two after release. I know that will never happen seeing as that would be seen as the company admitting bugs in the game and contradict the hyping of the game. It is wishful thinking though.

@lion2447: It's more about a willingness to fix the problems, or lack thereof. Free QA / beta testing is easy to come by. I was an unpaid tester for a major PC sports game series about 20 years ago, part of a great group that enjoyed the early access to the game and being able to make an impact.

But even then, the greater issue was lack of time on the developers' part to fix problems identified both before and after release. There was executive pressure to meet shipping deadlines--even more pronounced for sports games due to the seasonal nature. Later getting resources to produce patches was also a challenge. (I still remember one situation where the testers had a running list of issues to be tweaked and adjusted in a patch, but the project manager ended up telling us he could only get a programmer for a very short time. Message was something to the effect of "we have enough resources to fix these 3 critical issues and then we're done.")

Blame is probably shared between execs who hold to certain budgets & ship dates and project managers who cannot deliver on their promised goals.

Overall, there are still good people in the gaming industry. But companies like Activision and Ubisoft give everyone a black eye.

@tjkraz: Wish I'd read your post. I said basically the same thing. It's more likely an issue of keeping to deadlines and deciding what was a show stopper that would hold back release and what was ok to ship with and fix later.

Honestly this is unacceptable.....I haven't even bought this damn thing yet and this should not be a fracking issue.....

GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST DAMN TIME FFS!!!!

I'm tired of this lazy ass attitude of companies, eww let's do something for fans....then totally drop the ball and release a busted ass game that isn't even a remaster.....oh no, don't go in and fix anything good gods that'd actually mean doing some actual work....the work might cut into profits....fracking pathetic......and people wonder why I hate Activision and their dev's......it's cus no matter what if it's not the big cash cows no effort whatsoever is put in.....

@Frogster8: I'll support it when and if they fix it. Right now it doesn't do me any good to purchase an unfinished product, but it also doesn't do me any good to boycott a title I want to play if at some point in the future it's a satisfactory product - or cheap enough. Right now the price versus quality disparity is too high. I don't hold grudges like that. If I did I wouldn't be many games from 2006 onward.

@IIIMatricksIII: get a X360 and the games and play em there.....seriously a system and both games might run you $120 for bare minimum setup? or here's an idea buy a flash drive and borrow a friend's 360 and play that way then it's a clean $25 max for 2 games.....you create an offline profile and save it to flash drive and even set your saves to the flash drive, with just 2 games it's more than enough....just saying there's ways to play the games and boycott a bad company.....

@IIIMatricksIII: well locking yourself into one thing is bad cus when stuff like this happens you just sit there and go well it's not on my preferred system so it doesn't exist right?? that's wrong....

I own a PC that can play everything up to last gen [Fallout 3, Skyrim etc] but I prefer consoles cus they're easier to just jump in, that said I try never to lock PC out, I bought Stellaris recently and that's fun, definitely something i can't play on consoles and that's what I go for on PC, judging by your reasoning you aren't even doing that....PC won't really make these games any better, you're kinda better off on console anyways cus they are built for console first....but whatever, I see logic like yours all the time and it's stupid....why lock an option out just to say the other side is perfect? it clearly isn't if they're having issues executing the game....

see that's one side of PC I despise, the troubleshooting aspect, anything can go wrong and you gotta be an expert to figure out what's up but nobody ever talks about that aspect....it's always PC Master Race gotta love that Nazi racist kind of logic.....no machine be it console or PC is the end all be all....remember it was consoles who really got gaming started....it was consoles like NES, SNES etc that set the standard.....but again nobody ever celebrates that aspect......

so yeah internet is definitely stupid......
