Marvel's Avengers Will Add Spider-Man As PS4 And PS5-Exclusive Character

Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that Spider-Man will join Marvel's Avengers' roster.

Our Spidey-sense is tingling. Developer Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that Spider-Man will join Marvel's Avengers' roster as a free DLC character despite not appearing in any promotional material before. The character will be released as post-launch DLC, and the studio also confirmed that the webslinger will be exclusive to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. If you're on Xbox or PC, you'll be left out of the web-slinging fun, unfortunately.

Crystal Dynamics has since clarified that Spider-Man will be the only console exclusive character, so don't expect a match on Xbox. PlayStation players will also get a series of cosmetic bonuses, getting early access to some character costumes when new members of the Avenger join the game.

Now Playing: Marvel's Avengers War Table Gameplay Livestream (July 2020)

This comes after the PS4-exclusive Spider-Man game released in 2018, and just before the launch of Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS5. In fact, Crystal Dynamics has said his addition is only possible because of the relationship between Sony and Marvel.

The team shared no specific information about how Spider-Man will play. There are also no screenshots of Spider-Man in-engine, signaling that Crystal Dynamics and co-developer Eidos-Montreal are still hard at work on the playable character. It will be the second Spider-Man playable on PS5, as Miles Morales will also be featured in his own standalone game this year. This will not be a full-length game, but a title similar in scope to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

Still, in a lengthy PlayStation Blog post, Crystal Dynamics' associate art director Jeff Adams outlined what we can expect when Spider-Man arrives in the game after Marvel's Avengers launches on September 4. Adams said Spider-Man's "impressive acrobatic abilities will complement the experience, allowing you to seamlessly transition from navigation to combat," stating he wants players to feel "graceful and light" while playing him.

In addition to the smooth gameplay Spider-Man presents, Adams specified he wants players to "be able to utilize a variety of web configurations and gadgets to enhance your traversal." In order to make this happen, Adams said Spider-Man will get "unique skill trees" that will include an "impressive suite of iconic abilities and attacks at your disposal, [as well as the ability to decide] which gadgets and skills you wish to upgrade."

Furthermore, with Spider-Man teaming up with Crystal Dynamics' take on The Avengers, the webslinger will also get access to a variety of technology upgrades throughout the game. This includes "custom web shooter-based technology from Hank Pym, SHIELD, Stark Industries, and more."

In terms of look, Crystal Dynamics' Spider-Man for Marvel's Avengers will be influenced by the work of both Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr., meaning players will see a Spider-Man that is both new and familiar to the source material. And when Spider-Man does arrive in-game, he'll be introduced with a special event that's comprised of "a series of unique challenges" designed for Spider-Man. These will test his abilities and, according to Crystal Dynamics, will yield "some exciting results." He will also have multiple costumes like the rest of the game's heroes.

Spider-Man is the second post-launch DLC confirmed for Marvel's Avengers but the first one made exclusive to one console family. He joins Hawkeye, who will also accompany The Avengers sometime after the game drops this September for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Marvel's Avengers is also coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

If you're playing the Avengers beta, on PlayStation or otherwise, make sure you check out its (well-hidden) best mission.

FYI, as of now, Sony does not own the video-game rights to Spider-Man, nor is the sole designated partner (along with their newly-acquired Insomniac) to bring his characterization to video games. MUA3: TBO and MvC: Infinite are so far the sole proof of that.

@Jarrkha: that, and there's several articles on the internet making it plain that Sony has the movie rights to the character and related characters, and that's as far as it goes.

This is just another back-alley deal by Sony, handing over money late in development to screw over the competition. Which is fine, I was iffy on buying it anyway, but even with all 3 current consoles in the house, I refuse to buy any game that has console-exclusive content. Screw 'em.

@cheeseweasel24: Same here. I play PC 70%, Xbox 15% and Playstation 10% of the time and am tired of Sony screwing PC gamers. Them vs. Xbox I don't care what the lame console wars do, but why do you need to screw with PC games?

Not a fan and it is only bad for gamers.

@cheeseweasel24: yep, I'm with ya there. It was actually one of the reasons I was late to the XB360/PS3 generation -- both consoles had practiced this trend really egregiously.

I love Spider-Man, but not to the extend that the idea of playing him as DLC in a game -- one which will probably not last me 100 hours before I get bored (due to possible repetitive/grind nature) -- should influence me buying a next-gen console, since PS4 is outta the question (full disclosure: I'm the one guy who doesn't own a PS4, but owns literally everything else). Wasn't even planning on upgrading to next-gen until at least fall 2021 anyway.

Eventually, he will be made available for all systems, and PC version will get a mod that unlocks/adds him anyway.

Spiderman is a character who doesn't really go too well in a squad based game, his style is more suited for soloing. We've seen the same thing in Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and a number of other, similar games, and it will be the same for this game, too.

@v1ndictive: We dont need social justice spiderman, or any other token political characters. Kamala Khan is enough.

If people want color characters who are not token, or politically correct characters, there are plenty in the marvel roster. Storm, Blade, Bishop, Goliath, Blue Marvel, Black Panther, Luke Cage and War Machine to name a few.

@v1ndictive: "Social justice" wouldn't automatically not make him very good, or not to be considered on his own merit. Not a knock on you, but people just don't understand the left or right side of the spectrum. I'm a center-oriented man myself, but I know the majority of those of us here, identifying "against" either the left or the right (but not with their opposite), are only doing so out of apathy or ignorance -- or both.

@dmblum1799: This is a forum dedicated to entertainment. At the end of the day, if life were to suddenly get really hard for most people, this kinda stuff is the first thing to drop from our list of priorities.

It's all ultimately meaningless.

@aross2004: there were character logos on "shields" during the last war table stream; eagle-eyed sleuths will be able to suss out possible/probable future DLC characters. Winter Soldier looks like one of them.

Smart for sure, for some people this will mean choosing PlayStation over Xbox and that's really the point,.and it further justifies PlayStation loyalty

At the very least for the poeple who own both it's gonna convince them to buy on PlayStation

I know its suppose to make me want to purchase one version over the other but its practices like this that make me inclined to just outright not support the game on any platform. Luckily, I wasn't all that interested in the game to begin with and licensed games always have problems with longevity having too much red tape to get through to add new content which seems like it would be an issue for a game like this.

I like Crystal Dynamics but this is an easy miss for me. I just want Eidos-Montréal to finish helping make this game so they can hopefully go back to making a new Deus Ex game instead.

One less game that I have to buy.

I'll buy a console exclusive, because I have all 3 consoles. I WON'T buy games that have console-specific DLC. Everyone gets it or no one gets it, or they don't get my money.

It's complete BS after his appearance in MUA 3 (Switch exclusive; published by Nintendo). And the copyright hell that plagues this like other licensed games infests it's way here still.

I knew this dickery would happen. Called it on your YouTube channel for last week's video.

Maybe I'll post this to Reddit too, especially with hints in last week's war table indicating that Winter Soldier and others are probably on the slate as well.

Anyway... What do Xbox and Steam versions get? If they both get the same exclusive DLC, then PlayStation players will feel excluded. If they get their own DLC each, then it's fair game for everyone.

If they get nothing, well, Square Enix can't increase the price of the PS4/PS5 version especially if they promised DLC as free... So drop the fucking price for the Xbox version, and Steam, or they can go to the shit eating hell of Mephistopheles. Maybe they can cut a deal with old Mephisto to see if something or other gets wiped from our memories, at the cost of some relationship.
