Mass Effect 2 lands on PSN

PlayStation Store Update: BioWare's space RPG hits Sony's download hub as 12GB download alongside Spare Parts, and Modern Combat: Domination; PSOne Classics add Metal Slug X, Mega Man; 7 NeoGeo titles for PSP also now out.

No Caption Provided Last week, Sony broke ground by announcing that Mass Effect 2 would arrive on the PlayStation Network the same day it does at brick-and-mortar retailers. Now, that promise has come to fruition.

Leading the charge this week is Commander Shepard's PlayStation 3 debut. Mass Effect 2 ($60) is now available as a 12GB full game download via the online marketplace. The game includes three of the game's previously released downloadable content packs: Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker, and Kasumi. For more on the PS3 version of the game, check out GameSpot's review of Mass Effect 2.

Also out now for the PS3 is Spare Parts ($10). From EA Bright Light, the title is focused on two robots--Mar-T and Chip--who are dumped out with the garbage on an alien planet. In the title--which supports both on and offline co-op--players must explore the planet, defeat enemies, and locate parts for an abandoned ship that they will pilot home.

The elusive man remains just as elusive on the PS3.
The elusive man remains just as elusive on the PS3.

For the shooter enthusiast, Gameloft's Modern Combat: Domination ($8) is now available to download. The online first-person shooter supports 16-player battles, leaderboards, and Sony’s motion-control peripheral, the Move. Additionally, the game sports five multiplayer maps and six game modes to participate in.

Gamers wishing to add to their existing titles can now download new content for Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood and R.U.S.E. Brotherhood welcomes the free Animus Project Update 2.0, which adds a new multiplayer environment called Pienza, as well as a Chest Capture game mode, where teams of three must seek out and steal the opposing faction's chest.

As for the World War II strategy title, R.U.S.E. welcomes the Chimera Pack ($10). The add-on content packs in fresh content for the game's single- and multiplayer components. Three new multiplayer environments are available in the Chimera Pack, and three new challenges for the solo campaign are packed into the content.

Those looking to the past for their fun can now download two new PSOne Classics, the first of which is Metal Slug X ($6). The run-and-gun shooter is full of deadly weaponry, enemies, bosses, and vehicles. The other PSOne Classic out now is Mega Man ($6). From Capcom, the game thrusts players into the cybernetic boots of hero Mega Man, as he takes on Dr. Wily and his robot master minions.

Switching to the PSP storefront, Sony this week added seven new $7 titles to its recently launched NeoGeo Station. This week's titles are Alpha Mission II, Art of Fighting, Baseball Stars Professional, League Bowling, Magician Lord, Super Sidekicks, and The King of Fighters '94.

Gamers looking for new music to rock out to this week can download new tunes for Rock Band 3, DJ Hero 2, and Def Jam: Rapstar. Rock Band 3 welcomes a triple shot of Corey Taylor-led Stone Sour tunes; DJ Hero 2 adds the Trance Anthems Mix Pack ($8); and Def Jam: Rapstar welcomes songs from LL Cool J, Lloyd Bands, N-Dubz, Shawty, and Nitti Beatz.

A full list of the week's deals and new PlayStation Store content, including themes, wallpapers, demos, discounts, and add-on content, is available on the PlayStation Blog.

It depends on your connection.... Jesus people are dumb. I have a 50meg fibre optic connection. It won't take me more than a few hours to download 12gb. If you've got a 2meg dsl connection then it will take somewhat longer....

Heh, I believe that Sony - or more precisely, EA - is running an experiment here. EA has already informed the public about its growing confidence in digital distribution. This could be an attempt to see how the retail copy would compete with the digital copy. Besides, as hard as EA tries, it can't get the physical copies to every potential PS3 customer, can it?

Yeah I have a 20gb cap on my internet so no way would I download a 12gb game. I could drive to the nearest store (almost half an hour away), buy it, drive home and install it in less than it take to download. All without wasting 12gb if bandwith and storage on my PS3.

You also get the original game as a motion comic that they did just for this game. Along with the Cerberus Network which is too much to buy it alone

$60 for the game and three DLC? Not the best deal I say. I saw ME2 on sale for $10 on Steam (x-mas deal sadly, so its over now) and that combined with all the DLC would still average around $45- $50 I think.

It must take a week to download this game. A measly 2 gig download takes a few hours.

@oneligas it is only going to take 47 hours for ME2 to download on PSN HAHAHAHA **************************************************************** You got that right. I don't know who in their right mind would download this game off of PSN with the PS3 slow as a snail network. It will literally take 2-3 days. Maybe a day and a half if you have Verizon's FIOS.

@bobasweat it should come out on friday along with the physical version (I think it would be quicker to go to shop and buy it rather than download though)

Why would you download it when you can just buy a physical copy?

I still need to beat the first one. I hate playing a sequel without beating the first one. So I need to do that for sure. I know that this time Im not going shotgun/handgun combo, that has caused me too much grief in the first one, lol.

News to me, I never ripped it. We always knew ME2 and beyond had a chance of coming to the PS3 ever since Bioware was acquired by EA.
