Mass Effect 2's Jack Was Supposed To Be Pansexual, Until Fox News Got In The Way

Conservative backlash against the first Mass Effect game led BioWare to be more cautious about depicting queer relationships in the sequel.

Mass Effect 2's Jack was originally supposed to be pansexual, but her romance arc was changed after BioWare looked at the media reception to romances in the original game, as reported by The Gamer.

Since Mass Effect 2's release 11 years ago, fans have wondered why Jack was could only be romanced by a male Commander Shepard, since she makes references to being with partners of different genders in some of her voice lines. After the original game's launch in 2007, Fox News held a panel about the game's depictions of sex and sexuality. The panel criticized both Mass Effect 1's sex scenes and the ability to romance Liara T'Soni as either a male or female Shepard.

Talking about the development of Jack's romance in an interview with The Gamer, writer Brian Kindregan said: "She was essentially pansexual for most of the development of that romance." But the Fox News panel created a domino effect that changed things.

"Mass Effect had been pretty heavily and really unfairly criticized in the US by Fox News, which at the time... maybe more people in the world thought that there was a connection between reality and what gets discussed on Fox News," Kindregan said. "The development team of Mass Effect 2 was a pretty progressive, open-minded team, but I think there was a concern at pretty high levels that if [the first] Mass Effect, which only had one gay relationship, Liara - which on paper was technically not a gay relationship because she was from a mono-gendered species - I think there was a concern that if that had drawn fire, that Mass Effect 2 had to be a little bit careful."

Courtenay Taylor, the actress who voiced Jack, also was under the impression that Jack was supposed to be a pansexual character. In an interview with The Gamer, she said: "It’s funny to me because my understanding was always that she was pansexual. So I don’t know if that’s just something I inferred from the character or something that she said that maybe got cut. I was surprised there wasn’t a female romance possible because that was my understanding."

Despite this understanding from both her original writer and actor, Jack was made a heterosexual romance option, and with Liara only appearing in DLC, the only queer romances available were Kelly Chambers, Samara, and Morinth. No queer men were made available at all, and Samara and Morinth aren't actual romance options, as Samara will turn Shepard down and Morinth will literally kill them.

With the Mass Effect: Legendary Collection, some fans are hoping that some of the relationships and characters BioWare dropped the ball on the first time will get a second chance. Mass Effect 2 will be included in this collection, which may be releasing in March. We'll have to wait and see if those hopes come to fruition.

@peterroberts123456: since you are talking about "options" how would you feel about having it reversed. Have a trans main character and give you the straight option as dlc.

@peterroberts123456: one of the first things I did in Saint's Row the Third was transition (but keep my big ol' *redacted*) and streak through the next 6 hours of gameplay without so much as shoes on. I was so hot.

Good. I'm sick of this company promoting their abnormal views on sexuality. Next will be a trans main character and i'll boycott. How about they make it dlc. If they give you a choice at the beginning, fine, but just keep me away from it.

Wow, dude! You just admitted to supporting censorship of people's are JUST because you disagree with their politics. How hypocritical is that?

Dead or Alive X3 was supposed to be released in the west until left-leaning western games media outlets put people like Anita Sarkeesian on a pedastool, and started creating false rhetoric that fanservice games lead to misogyny and violence.

Too bad, I hung out with my metamour while she played this trilogy & she really wanted to romance Jack as fem Shep, that would have made her really happy!

@kintoneo: I think part of the problem here is that videogames are still stigmatized as "child's entertainment". Eventually that will change.

@Barighm: Well...ANYTHING can be considered a toy if it is purchased for entertainment purposes. A Harley...pool table...RV....etc.

Of course I have a strong feeling dude is simply being antagonistic but he isn't entirely wrong.

Would be nice, if sometime in the future videogames could include sex or sex scenes. I think, only one country has a problem with it...

@phili878: Bisexuals are interested in both of the binary genders and identities, male and female, whereas to a pansexual gender and identity doesn't matter. Also the word has been in use for around 100 years, so it's not exactly a recent invention.

@sbargovox3: but there is only male and female so what difference does it make if you are interested or not interested in the genders you are about to have sexual experience with?

@phili878: Well, broadly speaking, a bisexual is interested in males and females but also the expressions of them. A male presenting masculine and female presenting feminine. Pansexuals can still have likes and dislikes, but it's not restricted by sex or gender identity or expression. They can be as attracted to a male presenting masculine as one presenting feminine (not transgender, but in this case a nonconforming cis male who still identifies male, uses he/him pronouns etc.) or presenting no specific gender or identity, such as a non-binary.

@sbargovox3: I appreciate you explaining but this sounds to me those people that claim to be “pansexual” are nothing more than attention seeking snowflakes in this case.

@sbargovox3: the first time I heard someone say "pansexual" was before 9/11, so I'm pretty sure the term predates nonbinary identity

@sbargovox3: Ultimately down to the nuts and bolts, its the same thing. They are interested in both genders, whatever you identify yourself to be; doesn't change that you are one gender or the other.

@phili878: What about a biological male that identifies as female? Or vice versa? Or a non-binary person? Or a 2-spirit? That's why the term exists.. because there's no longer just 2 distinct gender identities.

@jeeberscreepers: a biological male that identifies as a female does so because she is female. Trans people are not a third gender; just ask them. They will tell you that they want to be seen as a normal guy/girl. Sure, a handful of them will dress like clowns for the instas but most trans don't look like an omnisexual John Wayne Gacy and they probably don't appreciate the clowns getting all the press. As far as non-binary/genderqueer or any of the innumerable permutations thereof, I've never heard nor read anyone describe what any third or fourth or seventeenth gender consists of. It seems semantic muddiness enables some, as a lot of the left now refers to gender roles as simply gender. If we're talking roles, there's no need to count and I haven't much use for them. If we're talking male and female, just what are the third and fourth? Various shades of androgyny? Having both masculine and feminine characteristics, which a shit-ton of people do (hell, I probably do), doesn't in my opinion make for a third gender.

@jeeberscreepers: Pfft. Let's see how many genders exist when your doctor asks you for proper information because, if you don't provide it, you could potentially die (yes, this is a real thing, especially with anesthesia. Source: my mother, a doctor and gynecologist. Saw her get into a gender politics discussion for the first time this Christmas and it was hilarious. Don't argue with someone who is literally a life-long expert in sex hormones and their effect on psychology).

I don't even know why you'd write this article 13 years after the fact.

Bioware's "romance" options are ridiculous in general and have been for a long time at this point. Like most of the studio's writing and game design, the romances are done as a box-ticking exercise where some variation of the exact same storyline (going back to KotoR and the original ME game) are put on rails for the player's enjoyment:

Complete sub-stories A, B and C to progress the main story and reveal the big mystery/twist.

Choose from our small list of token romance interests. We've included both hetero and homo sexual options so that most players can experience some manner of awkward conversations and cringe-worthy "sex scenes" as their reward for choosing a handful of obvious dialogue choices.
