Mass Effect 2's Jack Was Supposed To Be Pansexual, Until Fox News Got In The Way

Conservative backlash against the first Mass Effect game led BioWare to be more cautious about depicting queer relationships in the sequel.

Mass Effect 2's Jack was originally supposed to be pansexual, but her romance arc was changed after BioWare looked at the media reception to romances in the original game, as reported by The Gamer.

Since Mass Effect 2's release 11 years ago, fans have wondered why Jack was could only be romanced by a male Commander Shepard, since she makes references to being with partners of different genders in some of her voice lines. After the original game's launch in 2007, Fox News held a panel about the game's depictions of sex and sexuality. The panel criticized both Mass Effect 1's sex scenes and the ability to romance Liara T'Soni as either a male or female Shepard.

Talking about the development of Jack's romance in an interview with The Gamer, writer Brian Kindregan said: "She was essentially pansexual for most of the development of that romance." But the Fox News panel created a domino effect that changed things.

"Mass Effect had been pretty heavily and really unfairly criticized in the US by Fox News, which at the time... maybe more people in the world thought that there was a connection between reality and what gets discussed on Fox News," Kindregan said. "The development team of Mass Effect 2 was a pretty progressive, open-minded team, but I think there was a concern at pretty high levels that if [the first] Mass Effect, which only had one gay relationship, Liara - which on paper was technically not a gay relationship because she was from a mono-gendered species - I think there was a concern that if that had drawn fire, that Mass Effect 2 had to be a little bit careful."

Courtenay Taylor, the actress who voiced Jack, also was under the impression that Jack was supposed to be a pansexual character. In an interview with The Gamer, she said: "It’s funny to me because my understanding was always that she was pansexual. So I don’t know if that’s just something I inferred from the character or something that she said that maybe got cut. I was surprised there wasn’t a female romance possible because that was my understanding."

Despite this understanding from both her original writer and actor, Jack was made a heterosexual romance option, and with Liara only appearing in DLC, the only queer romances available were Kelly Chambers, Samara, and Morinth. No queer men were made available at all, and Samara and Morinth aren't actual romance options, as Samara will turn Shepard down and Morinth will literally kill them.

With the Mass Effect: Legendary Collection, some fans are hoping that some of the relationships and characters BioWare dropped the ball on the first time will get a second chance. Mass Effect 2 will be included in this collection, which may be releasing in March. We'll have to wait and see if those hopes come to fruition.

First the left screams and rants about immortal games like Mortal Kombat and how kids shouldn't see such things...

Only to complain that dudes should be getting boffed in the rear and kids should see such things.

Pathetic, flip flopping irritants.

@djk9: how dumb is this comment?

So it's stupid for the left to complain about violence but not stupid for the right to complain about sex?

Also, the left pushed for a ratings board for video games to help prevent kids from seeing extreme violence or sexual content at all. No one is advocating for children to see dudes boffing each other.

@tanzel: I guess you've never actually WATCHED the senate hearings. It was Democrat after Democrat whining about violence and sex. They were no advocating to market it to adults; they wanted it removed from the market. Feel free to watch for yourself.

Democrats blow with whatever way the wind takes them. In today's day and age, that means pushing sexual immorality onto children. It was the opposite 20 years ago. Whatever's trendy!

@songokudbz: It's bait. Just a topic they decided to dig up to stir the pot of controversy. I mean, ME1 is 13 years old, made before the LGBT/SJW thing really blew up and became social media hysteria.

@mogan: Sure but if their goal is to amplify a particular message, they're actually amplifying in the opposite direction, so ultimately I'm fine with this kind of article and the reception it gets.

The high amount of homophobic people here is disgusting. The description above says that GameSpot has zero tolerance towards toxicity. Why these people are still allowed to comment here?

@rogerjunior: The term homophobic implies we are afraid of homosexual people, when in fact the truth is we really don't care when it comes to gameplay. Make your character gay, straight, pan, it doesn't matter to me, or most anyone to be honest. Are they a good character? And therein lies the conflation. Sexual identity is increasingly seen as a basis for determining what constitutes an interesting character today, but most fans aren't really concerned with what they do in the bedroom and with who as much as they are with what kind of person they are, their existential struggles, and how they grow from adversity to overcome obstacles.

@rogerjunior: Because most people here aren't actually being toxic. They're expressing their views taht this kind of baiting in articles is bad. That's not homophobic, it's recognizing that click bait on a 13 year old game where Bioware is now claiming they were "forced" to change their plans because of Faux News making an article is just trying to illicit a reaction.

IF Bioware had any stones, they would have followed through with their vision and been the tip of the spearhead, but instead they kowtowed to the media, that is if you actually believe their story. Personally, I think this is actually just them trying to get some virtue signal points right before they release the ME collection. I mean seriously, who was talking about Pan Sexual behaviors back when ME2 came out? Most people had never even heard the term at that point, let alone knew what it meant.

Finally let us not forget that Shepard him/her-self was technically pansexual because they could boff human or alien with gay options, so why is this Jack thing even a thing?

Just so much wrong with this article.

@blindbsnake: You do not understand our side of the argument if you think we're just making it because it's not going in "our direction".

The whole point is that words CAN'T hurt you....for some of us people have been calling us all kinds of horrible things without any proof to the merit to the application of the label saying our politics and even our very way of life is "problematic" and yet we don't play the victim card because we believe that you are entitled to your opinion and we just choose not to call you friend, and that's ok.

I don't agree with your thoughts or opinions, but I'll fight to the death for you to be able to say them...said no leftist in the current political climate...

@blindbsnake: no problem buddy. Maybe I’m from a different generation than you, but crying about how “the mean kids who write mean things” should be banned is not the solution for anything. If you don’t agree with something, move on. Don’t rely on others to play your “mommy”. That’s how I see it. And the bigger problem is this snowflake mentally that is the root cause for articles and “news” like this. Fkn ridiculous, the state of culture these days

Yes... You probably too young...

"be banned is not the solution for anything"

I agree... The problem is... when the dirty fight starts someone started it... and you can´t stop dirty fights without some form of moderation...

"the bigger problem is this snowflake mentally that is the root cause for articles and “news” like this"

Nah... the cause for articles and “news” like this is that these things have an impact on things we care about. Sadly.

"Fkn ridiculous, the state of culture these days"

Again, I agree, but probably on the other side of the spectrum (hope this is the right word LOL)...

Except that they probably didn't. Tell me exactly who was talking about "Pan Sexuals" in the days of ME2 being released? Back then even Obama and Hillary were against gay marriage for god's sake (look it up if you don't believe me). Also why the hell would they not have made Jack pan sexual when Shepard WAS ALREADY a pan sexual, who could boff male or female or any non-human race (just limited options because muh programming)!?

Seriously this is a non-issue made up to help push sales of the collection release coming out soon.

Yes, probably. Yet, its a reminder of external influence. Not an exclusivity of one network or group, but I reality, nevertheless.

But using Fox News is clever, one of the most stupid networks always spread discussion.

"help push sales of the collection"

Only a different ending for ME3 would do that... LOL

@blindbsnake: Except that the story is a lie. If they were so afraid of making Jack pan-sexual, then why did they make SHEPARD PAN? I mean seriously Shepard can have sex with males and females and aliens too...so isn't that the very definition of pan-sexual?

Just click-bait and a ret-con on history.

@Akriel_Boulve: I´m not debating if the story is a lie or not. Personally, its irrelevant for me. ME2 was for a while my most loved game, after ME3 is just a bittersweet remember of a great game.

But how media reacted in those days to ME is not a surprise...

@blindbsnake: I’m 41, and the only reason my attention was drawn to this “article” was because it was related to one of my all time favorite games. It was made in a time where a game’s quality was more important than which letter of the alphabet people it panders more to. Not just games, but entertainment in general.

10 years ago the fact that a game character could be attracted to any gender would no be news worthy.

But what really pisses me off is people complaining about other people complaining this is considered “news”.

Back in the 90’s the way to deal with toxicity was to ignore and/or override. We didn’t sit and expect content to be moderated. Like in life.

I agree with you that there’s is way more toxicity online than it should, and we all suffer from it. But don’t make it a real problem, because it isn’t. And people who think it is ARE the problem.

That’s why websites like this one, kotaku, etc, are slipping like yesterday’s wet turd...

That’s why

Yes... but you have to realize that times changed. I have zero problem while dealing with morons, but I understand that some people are more sensitive to stupidity.

There is a levels of toxicity that is acceptable or able to be tolerated (the moderators on this site may be the best persons to reply to this), but if there are not limits this place will become a war zone pretty fast.

Seriously? Blaming Fox News for whatever executive decision changed Mass Effect? Sorry, but sounds like scapegoating to be able to virtue signal in today's climate in order to sell Legendary. "It wasn't us that changed it! It was Fox News boogeyman!"

As deplorable as Fox News is, the buck stops with Electronic Arts. I'm willing to bet my house that more than 95% of Fox News watchers don't even know what Mass Effect is.

Basically, 11 years ago the execs made the decision to try and make more money. That's a poor look, so today they blame someone else for their 'mistake'.

Isn’t pansexual technically being bi, I mean if you date a trans woman and your man, but also date real woman too, that would make you bisexual as a trans woman is still man on the inside and if they still have a wonton, then they like both wonton and soggy lettuce they’re are bi no?

@krazeekhujo05: You're making it overly complicated. The prefix 'Pan' means all. So in it's simplist term, Pansexual is someone who can be attracted to people of all genders and identities, (to also include individuals who do not specifically identify with any gender).

@blindbsnake: Respect is something earned, not something that is required. I don't really care what people are attracted to or what they do in the privacy of their own bedroom (at least as long as it doesn't involve kids or others who cannot consent). The problem I have is when people on the left try to castigate the people on the right for not wanting to go along with their ideas and call them every kind of problematic 'ist'

If you honestly believe that you should respect everyone, then you should respect them for their beliefs too, right?

@krazeekhujo05: technically yes since you either have XX or XY chromosomes (some exceptions exist, but not enough to make an argument over), but "socially" it's a bit more complicated than that.

"Bisexual" means you prefer men and women. "Pansexual" means you like everything, from non-binary to men and women and transexuals and all that.

The way someone told me is this: pansexuals are attracted to people in general, and don't think that scientific definitions or social constructs should have any say in who they love.

@mrbojangles25: So they're bi-sexual then... Believing ones self to be agender or gray gender or peach gender or otherkin or w/e you identify with has literally nothing to do with the physical junk you have or your genetics at large.

Sexuality is about attractiveness, so unless they are attracted to something outside the human species, then pan-sexual == bi-sexual

@Akriel_Boulve: People can be attracted to different aspects of people though.

I get where you are coming from and I agree for the most part, but some people are attracted to intelligence, and physical attributes don't matter, for example. Maybe someone is attracted to someone that is asexual. Who knows?

Look I don't get it entirely, but I think pansexual just makes room for a third or "n'th" option is all. Not really a bad thing imo.

@mrbojangles25: I'm not Geek-Sexual because I find geeky people attractive, or Jock-Sexual because I find body builders attractive though. That's the point.

When you boil down personality aspects into your sexuality, you've kind of lost the plot and removed any reason to discuss personality.

Sexual preference means which sex you prefer, and there are only two sexes (yes of course intersex exists, but they cannot typically produce offspring so genetically they are not some kind of a third sex).

Pan is just a way for people to feel special outside of Bi-sexual...unless of course they are also attracted to flatware and animals, they're not really Pan-sexual. The only real reason I am against the use of the term is because it is being used to divide us, just look at this article specifically stirring the pot over something that was literally a non-issue at the time, but they want you to think it was. Jack was bi-sexual, Shepard was way closer to pansexual (because in that game world you could have sex with aliens), so what was the big deal? Did Fox really really prevent Jack from being Pan, when they already had a Pan-sexual character? No of course not, but they're trying to generate clicks, successfully so unfortunately.

@Akriel_Boulve: yeah it is certainly divisive, won't disagree with you there. We need fewer labels, not more.

The problem is there are a lot of people that are not open-minded like you and me and many others and they will hate on those that are different, the "others".

So while I don't think more labels are necessarily a good thing in the big picture, at the current moment they are needed to identify and then protect those that are discriminated against.

Maybe in a few decades almost all of humanity will just stop caring who is ****ing who and we can move on, but until then...*shrug*
