Mass Effect 2's Jack Was Supposed To Be Pansexual, Until Fox News Got In The Way

Conservative backlash against the first Mass Effect game led BioWare to be more cautious about depicting queer relationships in the sequel.

Mass Effect 2's Jack was originally supposed to be pansexual, but her romance arc was changed after BioWare looked at the media reception to romances in the original game, as reported by The Gamer.

Since Mass Effect 2's release 11 years ago, fans have wondered why Jack was could only be romanced by a male Commander Shepard, since she makes references to being with partners of different genders in some of her voice lines. After the original game's launch in 2007, Fox News held a panel about the game's depictions of sex and sexuality. The panel criticized both Mass Effect 1's sex scenes and the ability to romance Liara T'Soni as either a male or female Shepard.

Talking about the development of Jack's romance in an interview with The Gamer, writer Brian Kindregan said: "She was essentially pansexual for most of the development of that romance." But the Fox News panel created a domino effect that changed things.

"Mass Effect had been pretty heavily and really unfairly criticized in the US by Fox News, which at the time... maybe more people in the world thought that there was a connection between reality and what gets discussed on Fox News," Kindregan said. "The development team of Mass Effect 2 was a pretty progressive, open-minded team, but I think there was a concern at pretty high levels that if [the first] Mass Effect, which only had one gay relationship, Liara - which on paper was technically not a gay relationship because she was from a mono-gendered species - I think there was a concern that if that had drawn fire, that Mass Effect 2 had to be a little bit careful."

Courtenay Taylor, the actress who voiced Jack, also was under the impression that Jack was supposed to be a pansexual character. In an interview with The Gamer, she said: "It’s funny to me because my understanding was always that she was pansexual. So I don’t know if that’s just something I inferred from the character or something that she said that maybe got cut. I was surprised there wasn’t a female romance possible because that was my understanding."

Despite this understanding from both her original writer and actor, Jack was made a heterosexual romance option, and with Liara only appearing in DLC, the only queer romances available were Kelly Chambers, Samara, and Morinth. No queer men were made available at all, and Samara and Morinth aren't actual romance options, as Samara will turn Shepard down and Morinth will literally kill them.

With the Mass Effect: Legendary Collection, some fans are hoping that some of the relationships and characters BioWare dropped the ball on the first time will get a second chance. Mass Effect 2 will be included in this collection, which may be releasing in March. We'll have to wait and see if those hopes come to fruition.

@itchyflop: Perhaps you have a point. But have we REALLY evolved? If we putting your weiner into anything that moves is evolution then perhaps we are nothing more than selfish narcissists.

In the end (no pun intended), if it feels good to someone...do it...more power to ya. None of my business, just don't force acceptance unto me.

@EricDWright: Condescending and denigrating by mischaracterizing it and employing ad absurdum to compare it to ridiculous "slippery slope" crap is what bigots do. Grats!

Also, learn to differentiate between you being perfectly allowed to be a hateful turd versus the law simply telling you can't act on it.

@esqueejy: Welcome to the real world where everyone doesn't agree with you. Like I said, do what you like, I don't care and its none of my business. Since you don't care what I think; why would it matter to you what I think about the subject? (that's a rhetorical question).

BTW I'm immune to name calling so save it and replace it with something more substantive.

Lastly, What Law are you talking about? Maybe your just as confused as the Pans....

@EricDWright: So predictable. This is what Faux News and right wing media teaches you to do: say something bigoted, get called out for it and immediately claim you're the "real" victim. Kudos. You've conformed to your cultural resentment training wonderfully.

Laws preventing you from discriminating against people you look down upon and condescend to because you've determined them to be worthless or not as good as you are not "forced acceptance." You're still free to believe all the bigoted crap that runs through your hillbilly head. You just don't get to act on it. Don't like it? Don't open a cake shop, champ.

@djk9:

On the very narrow grounds of HOW the commission that fined him made its decision, not whether the law prohibiting discrimination was itself valid. One of the people on the commission made stupid anti-religion comments, which tainted the record. The decision did NOT say that people can run around claiming it's their religion to discriminate against their customers. If you read the decision or spent even 20 seconds trying to understand it, well, screw it...you simply couldn't understand it even if you read it, and I'm sure your response will provide further proof of that.

And yeah, the racists and bigots in this country have been trying to back-door the religious excuse for discriminating for over a century. It was attempted during Reconstruction and the civil rights era as an excuse for discriminating against black people, often relying on the ridiculous "Curse of Ham" nonsense.

@esqueejy: What's more predictable is your diatribe of name calling insults and presumptions about who I am. But besides that you should be thanking me for exposing the you to the real world of where not everyone thinks or shares the same opinions as you. Perhaps your parent didn't teach you or prepare you for that...so your welcome.

Additionally, having a different opinion about something is NOT discrimination.

You are welcome for this life lesson I have taught you as you felt compelled to insert yourself into a conversation between two people. You could always recoil yourself back to your safe space if you don't like opposing opinions. I'd also tell you that there is NO law that doesn't allow someone to "look down upon" or "condescend to"...Any civics class or Poli Sci class would have taught you that. Have you taken any of those classes? If not you might consider courses other than Humanities, Liberal Arts, or other group think courses.

If feel the need to "get the last word" or additional name calling I would be glad to continue this life lesson to you.

P.S. Your Weclome

@itchyflop: Since when have heterosexual people been oppressed, discriminated against and publicly tormented for being heterosexual, forcing them to hide their true identity and pretend to be something they're not?

Oh, never? Yeah, thought so. so there's never been a reason for the concept of coming out to apply.

The absurdity of the arguments bigots come up with to defend their bigotry and denigration of those to whom they believe they are superior is pathetic.

And if you can't cope with the reality that LGBTQ people exist, such that you consider it "shoved down your throat" for you to have confront that reality, then there are plenty of ways for you to seek therapy.

@esqueejy:

hiding ones sexuality was infact needed until :

In 1979, the Home Office Policy Advisory Committee's Working Party report Age of Consent in relation to Sexual Offences recommended that the age of consent for homosexual acts should be 18.

Homosexuality was legalised in Scotland in 1980 and in Northern Ireland in 1981.

In 1994 the age of consent for homosexual men was reduced to 18 and in 2000 to 16 - the same as that for heterosexual couples.

So NO there's no need to "hide" it anymore and quite the opposite in todays society the stigma is quite relaxed now.

Its done for attention, that's my point, i don't need it, im sure that'll anger you or resort to you "naming" me in a bracket of contemption.

I can handle the LGBTQ people, so now you're categorising ME, sorry who are you?

You know me?

When have I said im superior or im a bigot?.

I've merely stated i don't want it "rammed down my throat", so what if people have no gender, or want to be a woman but you have a penis or visa versa?

yawnafuckingrama!!!!

There's people dying of COVID, people not socially distancing, not caring, that's what i deem to have "rammed down my throat" right now, not celebs "coming out" or expressing their "non" gender for publicity.

In fact I have many gay and lesbian friends one of which turns 16 this sat and I've bought HER a ps5, how nice am I? am i boycotting her for her sexuality and oooo under age?.

Its sounds like you cant handle other peoples opinions or suggestions??

Its a free country and like you were all free to express ours.

Before you judge, ASK.

I couldn't care less about people with a "non sexual" whatever, go be who ever or what ever you want to be, as long as its happy.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU'RE NOT!!!

now play nice with the other children.

@itchyflop: LOL! The stigma is quite relaxed? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! You do realize that to this day, about half of the US is still trying to make it legal to discriminate against LGBTQ people and reverse laws and precedent that prevent them from doing so, right? That there is even a sizable faction of them that still literally argue it should be criminalized? That the dynamic of needing to hide or feeling afraid, shamed and stigmatized plays out over and over again in the microcosm of families and school communities and local communities?

Falsely pretending "it's over" and "everything's fine now" is no less a way of undermining, delegitimizing and downplaying the problem than it is to just ignore it completely.

And having prominent people coming out helps set an example and lets people who aren't celebrities or in positions or power, or even just safety, know that they're not alone, helps push back against the still existing trend of people trying to stigmatize and discriminate, shows that it doesn't have to be an obstacle to success even though some people try to make it one. But yeah, I get it, the knee-jerk "blah blah who do they think they are" anti-celebrity crap. Tell it to Hannity. I'm not interested.

@esqueejy:

Laughing at others behind a keyboard in a demeaning manner doesn't become you.

The topic here is about a character in a fictional premise.

The jimmy Somerville "turn away, run away" era just isn't here in 2021, it may have been then ill admit, hence the video....... "what does it take to change the essence of a man?......TIME"

The "knee-jerk "blah blah who do they think they are" anti-celebrity crap. Tell it to Hannity" isn't present at all isn't everyone's opinion, like me, if it is, stay away from those people.

Personally id rather not watch two blokes going at it but I respect it and their happiness, its two people, to me coming out is yawnarama time, man so what, maybe im accustomed to it having regular friend time with who are of different sexual preference ???

i do indeed thrive off the flair and flamboyancy of our gbf , in fact Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is still one of my fav flicks he introduced me too (among others), for the record two girls doesn't "do it for me either" that's my opinion and I DONT act on it.

However i do recognise your point(s).

If say Jazz from "I am jazz" feels he needs to change so be it, I welcome her strength for doing so, and yes I see the "knee-jerk "blah blah" form some, BUT I also see the friendships she has and loving family.

Instead of "coming out" and highlighting yourself and your partners or the "gay" community (I assume were still on that topic). hell any sexual gender, why not just get on with it, introduce your partner just not as gay, LGBTQ, lesbian, what ever and mingle, your still HUMAN like the rest of us, maybe then acceptance will be norm??

Were not all ignorant!!!

If people don't like you or your sexual preference, so be it, they're allowed to, maybe they just don't understand it yet, if they act on it, well that's another topic to discuss isn't it.

It sounds like the only one "OLD FASHIONED" and stigmatised here is you, there are plenty of non gender people i for one am aware of, gay celebs, soap stars, tv hosts, normal people behind the screen, and in society, thriving.

If i may "stop sounding like and old queen and get on with it darling"

Be proud of WHO YOU ARE not WHAT YOU ARE.

Welcome to society, life's for living so go do that !!!

Stay safe

@itchyflop: LOL. Cute rationalization, bro. I especially liked the semantic game part where you pretend that someone's sexual identity is not "who" they are, but "what" they are....as if that attempted hairsplitting even makes any sense. That's nothing but ridiculous drivel masquerading as effective sophistry. Pathetic.

@esqueejy: ahh I thought we were gonna get along too.....

you really are narcissistic.

No one cares what you think on here.

Preaching your LGBTQ BS on another site relevant to what ever you're trying to achieve may be wiser, instead of "ramming it down peoples throats" on here.

If you're LGBTQ or are rallying for it, good for you..............................bro, the attention is needed obviously.

After reading your other comments to others it seems you're an abusive, self centred, opinionated, bitter, angry & self righteous mess.

And further more, read the GAMING ARTICLE above, regarding the pansexual context within a now 12 year old game, which I have indeed referred to, naturally you will want to distract from this and any indication towards it, because it doesn't "fit" your regime of demeaning or BULLYING others on a gaming comments forum.

How is sexual orientation considered politics you small-minded dweebs in the comments? It is about diversity and representation, very natural aspects of our modern life. If it was the other way around, I doubt anyone wouldn't raise an eyebrow if the entire cast is LGBT+ unless it was mandated by the story. It is virtually impossible to work/ study/ have a circle of friends ..etc that share the exact same orientation and background unless you come from a remote village in the 1940s

@white_wind: Because in their effort to keep the public divided and their base full of cultural resentment over the thwarting of the supremacy and dominance to which they believe they are entitled as white Christians, the GOP has made homophobia and the demonization of the LGBTQ community a keystone of their political platform, just like they have with their racism and nativism. It's not a mystery. It's not rocket surgery. And nobody is fooled by their asinine whining that "it's really the rest of the universe's fault for imposing diversity on us."

@esqueejy: GOP has not made homophobia and demonization of the LGBTQRSTUVWXYZ community the keystone of their political platform. Nor the racism.. .and what is nativism? Nationalism? look all the isms we fight over.

People are getting irate because this is a 12 year old game, a made up character, and a gross stretch to insinuate that Fox News was the culprit in preventing a "pan" character.

Its clickbait at its finest and when you look at the number of comments in this section it works.

But in all seriousness someone who says "its not a mystery" and "its not rocket surgery" sic (science) must have all the answers about how half the country is mysoginisthomoxenosexualphobic

that'll get people learned - good job hows that tolerance and love going over there

@stiefjac:

It is 100% objectively and demonstrably true that the GOP did all of that with the Southern Strategy. I'm not here to teach you history just because you dropped out of middle school. Go Google it or take a course and catch up on reality. It can be traced directly to the enactment of the CRA and VRA and the GOP's deliberate choice to focus on growing its base and power by adopting all the angry Dems in Confederate states who split from the Dems in the northern states who were responsible for those enactments. The through-line is entirely obvious and the inconsolable existential temper tantrum that began on November 4, 2008 and has caused the GOP to entirely abandon democracy is just the cherry on top. It's where it has always been headed because the GOP painted themselves into a cultural corner and all that's now left is for them to paint their KKKlown shoes.

"a gross stretch to insinuate that Fox News was the culprit in preventing a "pan" character."

When the people who made the decision tell you why they made the decision, you don't get to say "nuh uh" as if you know better than they do.....even if it comforts you to do so. Read the article.

""its not rocket surgery" sic (science)"

Are you really that weird that you've never heard someone deliberately mish-mash rocket science with brain surgery before in that context? Good grief.

"LGBTQRSTUVWXYZ community.....mysoginisthomoxenosexualphobic"

Your condescension towards and demeaning of these communities is on full display. Grats!

@esqueejy: Yeah yeah yeah I did a google search, 2005 the GOP issued an apology for it. Ya dun got me son. but to be honest with you, I don't like the GOP or whatever trainwreck the other half of our insane political system calls itself at this point. But to say that a strategy the GOP took decades ago still applies today after they admitted to it is - once again stretching it.

The people who made the decisions name dropped Fox News they didn't say it was Fox news that made them change the decision. I stand by this article being click bait and admittedly look where we are still here rabble rabbling away.

I read the article the quote was "I think there was a concern that if that had drawn fire, that Mass Effect 2 had to be a little bit careful."

Key word is I THINK. If he had said "Fox News scared us into changing it and the board made the decision specifically with that in mind": then yeah sure this article wouldn't be such clickbaity trash

also lets not mince words, the word pansexual and bisexual are basically the same things. inb4 "hurr hearts not parts". I say LGBTQRSTUV because the list keeps going as more and more people categorize themselves then demonize people for not being woke enough. nobody can keep up with this crap anymore. most people are fine with gay lesbian and bisexual. all this extra wordplay is a waste of time for things that ultimately mean the same things.

we've got xe's and xers and novigenders and pangenders and non-binaries and scollywops and scallywags out the yin yang

im condescending to you not them

@stiefjac:

They're still objectively and demonstrably employing the Southern Strategy to this day. Fighting to keep Confederate statues that were deliberately erected during Reconstruction through desegregation to thumb noses at equal rights. Throwing white nationalist dogwhistle tantrums about a man silently kneeling in protest of police brutality against minorities. Defending the Confederate flag being displayed on State Houses. Demagoguing immigrants who are brown and stealing their children in a bid to utterly ruing families in order to send a 'deterrent message" to migrants seeking asylum. Espousing political, social, fiscal and economic policies that "just so happen" to have a grossly disparate impact on minority communities, make them poorer, make financing less available to them, make businesses less likely to succeed in their communities or less likely to locate there (see "food deserts"), undermine public schooling in their areas, etc. Falsely claiming imaginary evidence-free accusations of mass voter fraud that "just happens to" target large minority liberal voting blocks to try to undo millions of votes and justify draconian changes to electoral processes and voting procedures that "just so happen" to disparately impact minority communities to make it harder for them to vote. Blocking legislation to even study domestic terrorism while the FBI informs us that white supremacist extremism is a big problem and the most probable source of future attacks. The list is ENDLESS.

If you're still in a researchy mood, go look at Lee Atwater's Wikipedia page and scroll down to his famous "n-bomb n-bomb n-bomb" quote in which he accidentally truthfully explains the Southern Strategy and how it is all about concocting a thin veil of policy rhetoric behind which to hide the racist intent and the intended racist effect of their policies...the proverbial DOGWHISTLING that they are still engaged in. The fact that they yell "we're not talking about race, just economics" while promoting geographic and cultural resentment against their fellow countrymen in the areas that their policies screw hardest...which "just so happen' to be urban areas with high minority population that vote Dem. Then, traipse on over to the Faux News website to watch Southern Strategy rain from the sky in a torrent.

Nothing could have been more Southern Strategy than the GOP faking an apology for the Southern Strategy and then continuing to employ it.

"sToP tAlKinG aBoUt PoLiTicS iN mY vIdYa GaMeS" say people who probably play war games or any of the probable majority of games that have some sort of political undertones. It's not that you don't like politics in video games, it's that you don't like certain representations in games that don't align with your narrow-minded viewpoints. Sure, I don't think a character's sexuality should be their entire personality but in most cases I don't see that happening. It just seems that way to some people because they piss themselves when it's "revealed" that a character is anything but straight because it makes them uncomfortable. That's it.

These topics annoy me so much. Who the hell cares about sexual orientation in video games??? It's a freaking video game. Any why is Gamespot or these other video game websites mixing politics with video games?? Politics should have nothing to do with video games. Stop bringing up politics, please. These sites should be about video games only!

@Ted_1: Pretty sure it was Faux News that mixed politics with video games when they threw an on-air tantrum over a video game as part of their cultural resentment propaganda. If they and the GOP would stop relying on bigotry to rile their "base" and drive a wedge into the country's populace, none of it would be political anymore.

Oh, so censorship is OK when it's done because of right-wing reactionaries, apparently.

@PsychoCrushor: EA isn’t full of right wing reactionaries. And Fox News had nothing to do with censorship.

@PsychoCrushor: There was no censorship. Bioware MADE a decision. It wasn't forced by anyone.

@gusbr: There are countless decisions developers have made that the "anti-SJW" nutjobs have falsely equated with "censorship" and "cancel culture" on this website....let's keep the convenient hypocrisy to a minimum, eh?

Wow, so nice to see 10 year old identity politics at the very top when I come to a video game site.
