Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Cut From Legendary Edition, And Here's Why

BioWare chose to focus on the core campaign to ensure it is the best it could be.

Mass Effect is a predominantly single-player-focused franchise, and that will be the focus of the upcoming Legendary Edition. BioWare has chosen not to include Mass Effect 3's multiplayer in the package in order to focus on ensuring the core campaigns got the attention they needed.

According to project director Mac Walters, restoring the multiplayer component of Mass Effect 3 would have been a significant undertaking, comparable to updating the entirety of the first game.

Now Playing: Mass Effect Legendary Edition Has HUGE Changes

"At least at one point in time, everything was on the table and ultimately we looked at what it would take to [add Mass Effect 3's multiplayer]--it obviously had a lot of challenges," Walters explained. "You look at everything from what you do with cross-play--because that's kind of an expectation now--what do we do with people who are still playing multiplayer now, how do we honor that, how do we bring them in, can we somehow bridge that gap? And, of course, these aren't insurmountable challenges--they're all things that we could do to fix that problem and get multiplayer in there.

"But when you look at the amount of effort that it was going to take to do that, it was easily commensurate if not greater than uplifting all of Mass Effect 1. And I think our focus really was on the single-player experience and, at some point, we just had to draw the line. I love Mass Effect 3 multiplayer--and like I said, people are still playing it today, but ultimately the product, the overall Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, is a better representation of the original trilogy because we were able to focus on those single-player moments."

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition's release date has been confirmed as May 14. It will launch on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The game will be playable on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 through backwards compatibility. You should experience shorter loading times on those consoles. However, it does not have a bespoke version for either system. The multiplayer was good but too many games focus on multiplayer and neglect the single player campaign

As much as I like the multiplayer, I understand their reasoning. I'd rather they give their full attention to the single player campaigns since that's the main draw for Mass Effect anyhow.

I couldn't care less about crossplay and they really didn't need to change anything else about ME3. Those minor adjustments to the readiness system surely haven't taxed them too much. And to use the changes they've made to the first game as an excuse is pretty poor. Ultimately the only thing they needed to do was to add the mp mode in again, just make it work, without any real changes that aren't necessary. It was already great the way it was. But it doesn't seem like they saw much potential in it for making money with MTs and so thought they'd save themselves the effort just out of laziness. And I'm really not sure what effort that really would have required as the mp mode is just a part of the game, so if they've already done all the work to bring ME3 to the new consoles, then adding the mp mode should really only require adjusting some server settings and basic stuff like that. Hell, they wouldn't even need to put up new servers. They could have just shut down the old ones for the PS3 and used those for the newer consoles instead.

Lame. The game is still fully playable and has active servers running to this day. They probably weren't allowed to remove the Origin DRM.

Then how about push EA and MS to give us the next best thing, enhancements for the backwards compatible 360 version of ME3 so that it can run at 4k on One X and Series X. Shouldn't require a ton of work

@Spartan_418: How is that supposed to be better than just adding the mp mode to a game that they've already remastered and brought to the new consoles? It really shouldn't require much effort to add the mp mode in since it's just a part of the game and doesn't require any changes. EA just didn't care for it, choosing to minimize the effort that went into this remaster by focusing only on the story modes.

@Atzenkiller: Didn't say it would be better, just said it would be the next best thing if MP in the remaster isn't happening. One X/Series X enhancements for the 360 version could make it higher res but it would probably still be limited to 30fps. Multiplayer in the remaster at 60 would be preferable.

Though there's also the issue of not wanting to lose all your progress and unlocks from the old version and having to start over, and who knows how easily that stuff could be transferred over across console gens

One of the few decent things about ME3 and they axe it...

Mass Effect 3 multiplayer is surprisingly awesome, even still today. I played the PC version of Mass Effect 3 via EA Origins game store/service about 3 years ago. I wouldn't have even tried it out, if it weren't for the single player campaign element around 'Galactic Readiness'. The more multiplayer you played, the more that readiness metric went up and it slightly affected the last battle. Here's hoping for a 'Legendary Multiplayer DLC' in the future!

@christophersays: Yeah, maybe if enough folks complain they might actually add it cause it really shouldn't require much effort at all. The remastered collection will certainly sell well, so that should provide them with enough encouragement. Not to mention that they could still make money with MTs, same as they did back in the day. In exchange for basically only having to run the servers as otherwise they ended all support for the mp mode about a year after the game's launch.

That's a shame, the multiplayer was a lot of fun and arguably what I was most hoping to see make a return long term.
