Mass Effect: Andromeda - BioWare Exec Talks About Nudity In The Game

Some of the previous games had "partial nudity."

Every entry in the Mass Effect series has been rated M for Mature in North America. The rating for the latest game, Mass Effect 3, noted that there was "partial nudity." Mass Effect: Andromeda's ESRB rating has not been published yet, but BioWare GM Aaryn Flynn has now suggested that you can expect it to get an M rating, in part because the game is upping the ante in the nudity department.

Here is what he said on the subject (via Polygon):

What appears to have been a preliminary rating for Andromeda spotted by BioWare Social Network showed an M rating and mentioned "partial nudity." However, Flynn's new tweet suggests that the rating's language will be amended. With just a few more weeks to go before launch, we would expect the official rating to be published on the ESRB's website very soon.

It's also possible Flynn was simply joking around. We've followed up with BioWare in an attempt to get more details.

The ESRB ratings for Mass Effect and Mass Effect 3 mention "partial nudity," but Mass Effect 2's does not.

Flynn went on to joke that Andromeda, which will have "pretty good banging," is "totally softcore space porn."

No Caption Provided

Andromeda launches on March 21 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. You may not have to wait that long to play, however, as a multiplayer beta is expected to launch at some point before then.

In other news, BioWare has confirmed there will be a day one patch and revealed the game's file size.

While you wait for Andromeda to come out, you can check out latest preview and chat with BioWare about the size of the game.

@Mommas_b_o_y: Please, let me school you. First, never take the words of the masses over your own. I have a mind. Using that mind I can decide for myself if this title is worthwhile. After doing serious research I have found that this game, even though not as good as say ME2. I would say that this game is worthy of the title Mass Effect. I only wish the story was better. And as a long-time fan of the series I was careful not to let the title alone sway my decision in purchasing the game. And after finding a good price I purchased the game. I was very impressed with the final product. So in the end, it does not matter what everyone else thinks.

@Bamda: the game is average and was overrated. It's fine to still like it, but it was a massive disappointment to fans of the series. I called it a mile away. If you need to know how future games are going to turn out just let me know.

@alexander_mark: I'm on a workplace laptop right now. Should I wait until I get home to look up "futanari"? From the context I can guess what it means but googling is just too fun.

Haha..."full nudity"...can't wait for all the angry, butthurt, anti-"SJW" types to throw an internet hissy fit over having to look at a digital schlong instead of a full frontal from a woman. Man that would be funny. Freekin toddlers.

@archav3n: I played the first Witcher many years ago now and was impressed with it's mature content and themes which were not shown in other games at that time. If you never played the first one in the love scenes all it had was a hazy red backdrop with Geralt gently kissing a woman and a card would show that partially naked woman(you can actually collect the cards of you're female conquests..lol). The church and community groups went mental over it which was nothing. Witcher 2 and 3 raised the bar even further with full on bump and grind and did the groups complain then? Nope....you couldn't even hear the sound of crickets. No way will Bioware ever compete with The Witcher series or CDPR in that area and not to mention in terms of gameplay and great story telling. I've played the ME trilogy and enjoyed them. I don't care if this new ME game is going to have bums and titties, I'm not impressed with the trailers and gameplay so far, or though I do think it has potential. It's most likely going to be a BBB (Bargain Bin Buy) for me.

I always thought the "close on butt" scenes were annoying, let alone digital "romance" options. I'm not against it per se...but I want to be in a space adventure. I guess having a life/family etc changes your reasons to buy a game like this. But really? They had to force in a bunch of unwanted/unneeded sex? They could have spent that time fleshing out the main campaign, or side quests, etc.

@demi0227_basic: I get what you're saying; it's true that the romance/sex scenes in games are just unwanted distractions to some. Thing is, the rest of the demographic enjoys the full RPG experience that includes building relationships. It's no different than getting attached to fictional characters in shows, films, books, or even dreams. Having convincing social interactions in a game greatly increases overall immersion; It's a key concept of RPGs after all.

A protagonist with ridiculous heroic feats and a bland personality does not make for a relatable character--It's just the video game equivalent of the action film hero cliche. With choices and social interactions deriving from your own, the protagonist/avatar becomes much more relatable. In turn, that personal touch is what actually makes you feel immersed in the game/story.

These scenes are a lot less time consuming, production wise, than adding quests and such; It's really not a case of "either or". As for those who just don't want to play through these sections, there is always the option of NOT pursuing one. You never "had" to choose a romantic interest. So it's really a non issue.

@demi0227_basic: That is true, many games don't really benefit from those elements. But eventually, it is developers' freedom to introduce them, or not.

Much as I am concerned: I'm perfectly OK without any virtual among-the-sheets, but if they include them, I'd prefer to see nudity. I was a bit annoyed with Witcher 3 "steamy" scenes where Geralt and his ladies were wearing underwear (and, in case of ladies, very modern looking underwear). It was just... trying to sit on two chairs. Do it or don't. If you do it, do it in believable manner.

I respect Conan Exiles for that full-on approach. Again, I'm not saying that nudity was necessary, but as they decided to go for it, at least they have executed in manner which I find believable for Hyborian era.

@demi0227_basic: what are you talking about? I had at least one replay of each of the games in the original trilogy without a love interest, hence no love scene towards the end of the games. You always have the choice, the game does not force you to experience those scenes.

Yeah yeah, nudity, cool, but what about the gameplay mechanics? The storyline? The frame rate? The other things that matter in a game? Sure, full nudity is a great and, should be, natural feature of any game that features romance, but that's not a selling point. I'm not gonna buy it for that reason alone. I wanna know about the things I mentioned above, not the DD's on a slutty alien chick.

@jayskoon93: See that bright yellow thing in the sky? We call it the sun. If not, give it 3-12 hours and you will almost certainly see it. Then find a computer, laptop or cellphone or ipad or ipod, type Mass Effect Andromeda into any search engine and voila!

@jayskoon93: You must've missed the parade of articles about those things, huh? PAY ATTENTION.

BTW, just because an article is about one thing, doesn't mean that all the other things are being ignored and that there hasn't been full coverage of them. You seem to be buried deep in that logical fallacy.

I figured this was a big joke.

Considering they purposely made the characters fugly to make a statement about reality in a game about traveling to another galaxy and fighting aliens with lazer guns and magic powers.

Bioware is living in an echo chamber of anger and eggshells, i take everything they say with a grain of salt.

I still havent decided if im going to buy Andromeda.

It feels like i would be cheating on Liara.

A quick aside-- I just finished the Mass Effect original trilogy, and boy does that ending fall flat after the intensity of everything leading up to it......but-- Getting to spend Shepards last night in existence with his naked blue asari soul mate almost makes it all bearable.

If used correctly....the nudity in Mass Effect raises the stakes within your releationships.....so in that sense....bring it on, yo.

Sorry germans, no games for you.

I don't really care about the nudity, because I am an adult - all I want is a good RPG, and this is BioWare's last chance from me.
