Mass Effect: Andromeda Has Crafting, Updated New Game+; Story Described as "Different"

Andromeda tells a "different type of story."

More details about BioWare's Mass Effect: Andromeda have come to light. The December issue of Game Informer contains a huge feature on the upcoming RPG, in which BioWare talks about new features like crafting, the New Game+ mode, and how the overall story is "different."

For crafting, players can acquire blueprints throughout the campaign to build weapons and armor. Fans may recall that the original Mass Effect had some mods, but it sounds like Andromeda goes a lot further. "The narrative setting means that you have alien races with new tech, and I think it's compelling for players to craft new stuff," producer Fabrice Condominas said. "That's part of the roots of the RPG system."

Now Playing: Mass Effect: Andromeda - Official Cinematic Reveal Trailer

Moving on, Andromeda's New Game+ mode will let you change your gender, an option that was not available in Mass Effect 3's New Game+. Another way to keep people playing is Andromeda's multiplayer, which will have what BioWare described as "prestige" mechanics that encourage players to try out different characters.

"There are several different types of characters in multiplayer, and each time you finish a match, you earn your regular XP, but you also earn prestige XP," lead designer Ian Frazier said. "That goes to every character in that type. All the tanky characters, for instance, might be a group that earn prestige XP together. And there's a different benefit for each type of character. Let's say you play these tanky characters--it could be three different ones--you earn enough prestige XP to level up. Now you get a health benefit to all of your characters--not just the ones of that type."

Despite this explanation, it's still not exactly clear how Andromeda's multiplayer XP system will work. With a multiplayer beta on the way, we should know more specifics in the not-too-distant future.

No Caption Provided

Andromeda's multiplayer takes place within the campaign's fiction. You play as a member of the Apex Force, tasked with defending against waves of increasingly difficult-to-defeat alien invaders alongside your squadmates. That's the same setup as Mass Effect 3's multiplayer, which was well-received, Frazier said, so BioWare used it as the core for Andromeda.

Similar to Mass Effect 3, players can unlock card packs for Andromeda's multiplayer with in-game credits or by spending real-world money. Frazier stressed that everything in the game can be earned through normal gameplay, so spending money is only a way to speed up the process.

Also in Game Informer's story, producer Michael Gamble was asked if Andromeda would have multiple endings, but he wouldn't confirm one way or the other.

"We want to leave the ending, and what we're doing with it, as a surprise," he said. "This is a different type of story, so it will be something different than the trilogy. We can't wait to hear what fans think."

There was some amount of controversy around Mass Effect 3's ending, as some criticized it for not bringing the game to a satisfying conclusion. Based on what Gamble had to say, it sounds like Andromeda's ending might be another much-discussed part of the game.

In other Andromeda news, BioWare has discussed the game's romance options, how it balances its shooter and RPG elements, potential DLC, and more. Additionally, BioWare has explained how Andromeda avoids dealing with Mass Effect 3's ending.

In addition to a new trailer and a separate video that revealed some key story details, we've also learned about Andromeda's deluxe edition and the fact that loyalty missions are coming back. Additionally, BioWare has confirmed that a multiplayer beta will be held before launch.

The December issue of Game Informer is available to buy now.

Andromeda is scheduled to launch this spring for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. More gameplay footage will be shown during The Game Awards in early December.

Sounds more and more like Dragon Age 3. Crafting is nice and all but I hope we don't get throw away weapons that are only useful for a few levels and scouring for crafting materials won't make up a significant part of the game.

The mp mode sounds nice though. ME3's was awesome and still by far the best way I've seen to implement a f2p model. You didn't need to spend any real money but those who felt like spending money to unlock stuff instead of playing the game also payed for all the dlcs that were released, so that everyone else could get them for free. Sure would be nice if they kept that as well. And if they would keep supporting the mp mode after a year of the game's release.

@Pelezinho777: My only significant problem with DA:I was the companion AI being dumb as a brick and the AI customization system from the previous games having been pulled out. Otherwise, I thought Inquisition was the best in the series, but hopefully ME:A can do even better.

*sigh* microtransactions. I remember doing cool challenges and getting achievements to get what other people didn't have. But nowadays all you have to do is spend a little money and you have stuff that people actually earned. It takes no effort and it decreases the longevity of the game because people will get what they want right away. I do love when people say it's only "cosmetic" because that just entails that they are lazy and don't want to put in the time and effort for a game that they BOUGHT and don't want to play and unlock it by doing said challenges or getting a hard achievement. Lol I feel like BDobbinsFTW right now.

@rumadbrah: Go play ME3's mp mode. It's by far the best way I've seen so far to implement microtransactions, where you really didn't need to ever spend real money on it since if you got good enough to play on the higher difficulty settings you'd be making enough money to unlock stuff at a good rate. It's not an insane grind as in most f2p games.

Also as I mentioned in my other comment those suckers paid for the 5 quite significant dlc packs that came out for the game over the span of a year. Because of those irrelevant microtransactions it was free for everyone so I really see no reason to complain, or to do it much better than this.

"Moving on, Andromeda's New Game+ mode will let you change your gender, an option that was not available in Mass Effect 3's New Game+."

A clarification to this. Your character doesn't actually switch genders, you just play as the other sibling since at the start of the game you pick one of two siblings of opposite genders. So if you played as the brother, you can play from the sister's point of view if you want in new game plus.

@katerinafm: I wonder why this was even worth mentioning. What I wanted from New Game + is to change the character class. Now that's something actually significant and I'm sure the new Mass Effect will still have character classes, no matter how customizable the character system is.

@Atzenkiller: The new character system is classless so you will be able to by just refunding your points some way.

@katerinafm: Yeah, that would be nice. Although Mac mentioned in that interview that there are technically 7 classes.

@Atzenkiller: My guess would be that your 'class' is like the specializations in DAI, only you won't be tied to a specific category or specific set of subcategories due to the lack of starting class.

@nibbin1191: It's not a whole other game because the only difference in the twins is who you are controlling. The story will stay the same. It's been confirmed :). So you are right that the female/male roles are interchangeable it's just that you also change which family member you're playing as. Meaning that, no matter what, your sibling is the opposite gender, because the Ryder family always consists of twins. And obviously the one you are not controlling is now passive so you get to choose the dialogue options.

This reminds me that ME2 had one of the best trailers in gaming history.

I hope "different" means it's not just another "main character is the messiah" sort of story. Sure your character can be pivotal to helping the ark ships or whatever the story is, but it's so cliched when they're the galaxy's Mary Sue and everything rests on their shoulders alone.

@sdzald: Yeah if the janitor somehow got swept up in some underworld deal and then had to team up with a pirate crew or else they space him. Non-space Jesus doesn't mean the main character has to be some schlub with a regular job it means that the character can be someone besides some super-duper Captain guy that everyone listens to in spite of the chain of command because the writers said so.

Oh Pleaseeeee no crafting! Don't get me wrong, crafting can be fun when it fits with the correct style game but not in Mass Effect. I sure hope crafting isn't just filler to try and make the campaign longer.

@sdzald: Disagree. Crafting totally fits with the narrative in Andromeda, what with being in (literally!) a different galaxy. Don't know about you, but I'd find it to be too cliche to be walking around and all of a sudden find a weapon/piece of gear/some armor on a world that no species from the existing ME universe has been to that just so happens to be totally compatible with the physiology and tech of the characters from the Milky Way. As described, it sound like you'll come across alien tech/equipment and the crafting part is adapting it to your tech/equipment/physiology, which is what would actually happen.

@ninjaroach81:

Crafting isn't necessarily bad but I felt like in Dragon Age inquisition for example it was kinda just a headache to constantly go and craft new gear since you could usually just make stuff better than what you found.

It took all the fun of discovering new gear away cause even if it was good you would probably just sell it.

I just am too lazy to scavenge the galaxy for parts forge something and then have to do it again a few levels later when it's obsolete. Some people may love it but not lazy me haha

@ECH71: Yeah so far it seems "different" because the two females revealed are uglier and the male protag is bland looking.

Or maybe everyone's genes have morphed in 600 years and noses are bigger and people uglier. I hope you can customize your own character..I would hate to have to play as the defaults!

Already it seems I have to look at Peebo who has a weird name and weird makeup for an asari.

Sera was actually pretty good looking compared to these so far.

I'm glad they're adding some manner of crafting, and I'm always down for a new game + mode. Could do without the romance though; rather the writers use that companion face time to continue fleshing out the characters in a way everybody can see.

Nope, worst thing was that it influenced the single player game. Should have at least had a toggle to stop it halving the effectiveness of assets for people who don't want multiplayer.
