Mass Effect Andromeda Release Date Delayed, BioWare Confirms

Postponement to "early 2017" deemed necessary "to deliver everything the game can be and should be".

Mass Effect Andromeda, the long-awaited fourth game in BioWare's acclaimed sci-fi RPG series, has been delayed to release in "early 2017," its developer has confirmed.

In a newly published blog post, BioWare said the release date delay was necessary "to make sure we deliver everything the game can be and should be". The studio also revealed that Mass Effect Andromeda would be showcased at the EA Play conference on Sunday June 12, days ahead of E3.

When teased at E3 2015, Mass Effect Andromeda was earmarked to launch in 2016. But a possible delay to the release date was expected ever since March this year, when an EA executive suggested the project was set to ship in fiscal Q4, which runs between January and March 2017.

Writing in the blog post, BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn suggested the delay was decided to ensure the Mass Effect projects meets internal quality standards.

"As we’ve been playing the game at the studio recently, it’s showing us that we’re taking the game in the right direction," he said.

"But we also know we need the right amount of time to make sure we deliver everything the game can be and should be – that’s our commitment from all of us to all of you. Because of that, Mass Effect: Andromeda will now ship in early 2017."

Flynn also confirmed the game, which now appears to be in its fourth year of development, will be showcased at the EA Play event, set to be held on the Sunday before E3 week.

Elsewhere in BioWare's blog post, the studio enumerated several design pillars and PR angles for its upcoming title. That list, as written by Flynn, can be found below.

• More Freedom: One of our biggest ambitions is to give players an unprecedented level of freedom for a Mass Effect experience –where you’ll go, how you’ll get there, and how you’ll play.

• New Uncharted Worlds: We’re leaving the Milky Way behind and headed to Andromeda, where we’ll meet new allies, confront new enemies, and explore fascinating new worlds.

• The Next Great Mass Effect Experience: Mass Effect: Andromeda will be the first Mass Effect game for today’s consoles and the first built on the Frostbite engine. We’re pushing the technology to deliver visuals, story, and gameplay that have never been done in franchise history.

Despite the project's long gestation period, BioWare Montreal has disclosed few details regarding Mass Effect Andromeda. Trailers have suggested the game takes place after the original trilogy, as the legacy of Shepard is referenced.

Fans of the series may have discovered that the protagonist of Andromeda will be called Rider. A dog-tag in the N7 Day trailer featured the word "RYDER" or "RIDER."

It is also speculated the character could be named after Sally Ride, the first American woman in space. This would fit in with the naming of the original trilogy's protagonist, who was named Shepard after the first American man in space, Alan Shepard.

On February 15, Andromeda's lead writer, Chris Schlerf, left the studio to join Destiny developer Bungie.

Garbage EA marketing tactics, making it seem like they are actually doing something for the gamers.

A) Either the final product is sitting there and you guys don't want to release any new info on it because it will be heavily criticized lowering your sales, hyping it up with delays and advertisements seems to work when more gamers are sucked into the gold pot.

B) The product is not even nearly 50% done because so many lead members left Bioware(betting because they didn't want to be limited and affiliated by a greedy scum company) and you guys just need more time know how to finish it up with a garbage sequel for further sales.

C) You guys are telling the truth and I'm just to dumb for not believing you guys.

P.S. EA is the only company that I will not be bribed and take their filthy money to speak positively about them.

P.P.s to EA: You will never become Berkshire Hathaway, you are destroying the world not building it. This abomination needs to stop.

ME was always about the journey and what happens along the way. After beating the game with 5 characters I felt fairly satisfied with all the twists and turns of the plot. The ending in ME3 was exactly what nobody wanted, an ending. Not every idea is meant to have an ending.

Not shocked by the delay ME2 & ME3 had the same type of delay. I am curious how multiplayer will be used with this one.

I'm cool with them delaying the game to be able to polish it properly, what I'm not cool with is this trending behavior of announcing games for a date and then just delay them with PR statements of "we're making it as best as possible".

I'd rather them just announce they are working on the game and then post an actual release date/window that is not moved like this.

Still weary of EAware, but Mass Effect is just such good universe that I can't just bring myself to ignore it for good, learned my lesson tho, not gonna buy until release and reviews are in place, one could think they can't pull anything crappier than the RGB ending but you never know :P

Just reading this is enough to likely get me to replay the trilogy.... although i never did get that Citadel dlc.... or Omega, actually. Each time through i start a new character and go through the whole trilogy so i just didn't have 200 more hours in me to replay the trilogy again for each dlc. Wonderful series.... and for the record the Extended Cut endings were peachy with me.

"I am so surprised!", said no one ever. Meh. It's been a long enough wait. A bit more to make a better game is always worth it.

I guess if you're out of the loop, this could be considered "news", but it was all but confirmed that the game wouldn't be out before 2017 a few months ago.

Regardless, I hope they don't take the DA:Inquisition approach with this game too (*cough* generic Ubisoft game *cough*).

I can wait. I got so many games to catch up on, its crazy. Better to fine tune it than rushing to release it and rolling out a humongous patch later.

Pfft LOL. Not going anywhere near anything labelled "Mass Effect". I was such a fan of the series and then they destroyed not only the reasons why I liked it so much, but even the universe it was set in in the first place (no, **** it, I am not putting "spoilers" for that one, everyone knows this already).

Only at EAware can a they literally destroy a game universe, and then try to milk money from it anyway, because the "IP still has value".

- Hey, Mass Effect is a well-known IP, make us some new sellout lens flare DLC-fest pl0x!
- But we kinda destroyed the entire universe in the last game.
- So? Just stick them into some new galaxy and pretend nothing happened!
- You think they are stupid enough to buy that?
- Battlefront says hello.
- Good point, we are on it.

@csward: Seeing as you just made that statement, it appears that it's you who haven't played it. Or perhaps you played JUST ME3, in which case you have no idea what a proper Mass Effect game is supposed to be like. It's not just the end that everyone complains about. ME3 was shit and a disgrace to the franchise from the the very first prologue mission.

@megakoresh: You seem to come across as a hater, ME3 was not nearly as bad a game as you are making it out to be, just because the endings weren't desirable by some people doesn't mean the entire game was bad nor a "disgrace to the franchise".

@megakoresh: So they destroyed the franchise which they own and developed and which you have absolutely zero say in whatsoever. Who the f**k cares? Just because you bought them (or perhaps you're a pirate) doesn't mean you have a right to its future direction or anything at all. It's their game. You merely buy it if you want it, and guess what? Don't want it? Then don't buy it.

Yet another gamer who thinks they're entitled to "my game" and "my franchise".

@mezzanine58: Apple destroyed their whole iPod franchise not giving a damn about the users, just so they can create iPhone which was the same exact thing except you could make calls... thus reselling us the same thing in a form of a phone.

Not a rare thing for big companies to destroy their own creation in order to recreate it and make more money out it.

P.s. Something tells me you've never had your hopes and dreams crushed before.

I get the feeling the whole early announcement and release date was EA over exuberance more than anything else, however I am still optimistic about Andromeda since delaying a game for the correct reasons is a good thing. The Witcher 3 is the most recent example of this. There has never been a mass effect game that was anything less than great, I even liked the ME3 although slightly tweaked. First either the colors have to be representing the beginnings of indoctrination influencing Shepard or be removed completely since there is no right or wrong decision in that circumstance just two impossible choices forced by an utterly hopeless situation, and Second if the syntheses ending was thrown out all together, since i strongly believe it was a cop out due to the extremes of Shepard either destroying all AIs or becoming the galactic dictator and was the only decision that truly went against the themes that had been built up until that point..

@razrabbit: They don't chop up anything, they have separate teams to produce the DLC content and they do it around the same time as the main team for the entire game. If DLC truly was cut up content then all DLC is, and no matter what form it is released it doesn't discount nor confirm the fact that DLC may have been split base game content.

@sepsis216: The ending is fine. What did you people expect it do be. The RPG cliche of what everyone is doing now? "Mordin died shortly after because Salarians only live 20 years, Grunt ruled over Tuchanka for 500 years, blah blah" Who cares? The ending allowed for you to make it ended however you wanted. Whats wrong with that?

@sepsis216: The big "failure" of ME3 was that the writing didn't wrap up the major event of the previous two games in a particularly satisfying way. That's unlikely to be an issue with Andromeda, since it isn't part of that original trilogy story. I'm not saying pre-order this game, but I don't think ME3 is a reason to be wary about it.

The ending of ME3 hobbled any chance of a decent sequel, follow up, etc. It screwed the pooch. It left the galaxy in an untenable position. Planets destroyed, Mass Effect relays destroyed. The only way forward was a completely hero character, setting, and companion and enemy characters. So, how could this really be a sequel? People want sequels because they deliver what the audience or player wants, that is familiar to them. Bioware, I believe, deliberately shot the franchise in the foot out resentment towards EA. This foot dragging, wrench thrown into the gears by a production crew is not with out precedent. In 2001, Tim Burton ended the Planet of The Apes reboot with an untenable ending because of a growing animosity with 20th Century Fox.

What EA/Bioware should have done was IGNORE the ending, and pick up the story from the ending in the Citadel DLC for ME3. Movies have done this. Aliens 3, and Highlander 2 were out right ignored in subsequent sequels. Terminator Salvation was ignored, and removed from the story line leading up to Teminator: Genisys.

@SirNormanislost: The whole point of continuing a franchise is to carry over what is familiar. If there is no Shepard, there is none of the familiar crew and companions, if none of the locations are the same, it's really not a "Mass Effect" game. They might as well call it something else.

Dragon Age 2 was a similar disappointment. None of your player characters carried over. The game looked and played differently.

It's like when back in the 80's, Konami needed a sequel to the NES hit Castlevania, they bought a similar game that was already in production at another developer, and tried to pass it off as a sequel. Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest. Which is the reason I tend to sarcastically refer to Dragon Age 2 as DA2: Hawk's Quest.

It's like a TV show spin off about a character that never appeared, or marginally appeared on the earlier show.

If "Dallas" could bring back "Bobby Ewing" through "his death was all a dream", certainly Bioware could have brought back Shepard, the crew, and not have screwed the Milky Way Galaxy all the way back to the "Big Bang".

@Jeff_Dranetz: Where did you read about Konami supposedly buying, and finishing Simon's Quest, or is this just random speculation? Not that I particularly thought that it was any good, but it just doesn't make any sense. Especially when you look at their output starting with the third game onward.

This game is a full on new mass effect title that has nothing to do with the old ME1,2,3

I suggest you start reading more than commenting on just the title :)
