Mass Effect Reportedly On "Hiatus," Changes Made At BioWare Montreal

EA confirms that some of the Andromeda developer's staff have moved to EA Motive.

During a conference call with investors yesterday, EA management voiced support for both the Mass Effect franchise and Andromeda developer BioWare Montreal in light of the mixed reaction to the latest game in the series. But change is reportedly afoot at the studio, according to a new report.

Mass Effect has been put on "hiatus," Kotaku reports. The franchise hasn't been axed altogether, but Kotaku's sources indicate that EA is waiting to kick off development on the next game in the series, rather than immediately getting started, as you might expect.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Mass Effect Reportedly On "Hiatus," Changes Made At BioWare Montreal

Additionally, changes are reportedly being made to the direction of BioWare Montreal. Some individuals have been moved to EA Motive, which is contributing to the upcoming Star Wars Battlefront II (as well as another project that won't be out until at least 2018, if not later). The remainder of BioWare Montreal will either continue working on Andromeda multiplayer content or shift to the new BioWare IP, which was just pushed back until at least April 2018.

EA clarified with GameSpot that there hasn't been any downsizing at BioWare Montreal and shared a statement from studio director Yanick Roy. It confirms some staff have moved over to Motive or are now helping with other BioWare games.

"Our teams at BioWare and across EA put in tremendous effort bringing Mass Effect Andromeda to players around the world," Roy said. "Even as BioWare continues to focus on the Mass Effect Andromeda community and live service, we are constantly looking at how we're prepared for the next experiences we will create.

"The teams in EA Worldwide Studios are packed with talent, and more than ever, we are driving collaboration between studios on key projects. With our BioWare and Motive teams sharing studio space in Montreal, we have BioWare team members joining Motive projects that are underway. We're also ramping up teams on other BioWare projects in development.

"There will be much more to come from BioWare in the years ahead.”

Andromeda was the first Mass Effect game to be developed primarily by BioWare Montreal, a subject that came up often in interviews with Roy and other team members in our documentary series earlier this year.

The reception to the game wasn't up to par with what we've come to expect from Mass Effect, a fact which was acknowledged by EA CEO Andrew Wilson in this week's post-earnings conference call.

"Mass Effect [Andromeda] is an interesting title; it was in development for a really long time and represented a lot of the great things that BioWare is known for: story, size, depth, breadth, imagination," Wilson said. "And while overall the aggregate review scores were lower than we would have liked, we did have over 100 reviewers score the game at 80 or higher. So it represents a fanbase that's very passionate, that's looking for very particular things, and many players found exactly what they're looking for, and some players did not."

"We're very happy with how BioWare is doing, how BioWare is treating Mass Effect, and our expectations for Mass Effect are still strong for the future and the franchise overall," he added.

Wilson promised that new content will continue to be released for Andromeda. He also denied that the issues Andromeda faced are related to the just-announced delay of BioWare's new IP.

Aside from new content, BioWare continues to work on improving Andromeda. Following an update last month that addressed Andromeda's maligned facial expressions, a new patch hit today that makes "various improvements" to its cinematic scenes.

Bioware died when EA bought them and the way they bought them was SHADY AS HELL. (read it up)

you can literally see the quality drop and massive amounts of dlc that came about when EA took hold and I have to admit I did not see it and I blindly bought the Mass Effect 3 day 1 dlc and never thought nothing of it, I even bought all the dlc for mass effect 2 (all the characters....) stuff that should have been in the damn game during launch

i hate you ea

@icelandichossi: You realize that Bioware's best work (KoToR, da:o, and mass effect) were done *after* EA acquired them, right?

Do some research to warrant that hate.

@ditronus: Incorrect. Dragon Age Origins was almost complete when EA bought them. It was mostly untouched by EA's degeneration.

But you know that guy in your camp that was shilling DLC in DA:O? That was put there by EA.

Mass Effect and KOTOR were developed LONG before the EA purchase. Go check your facts dude.

@ditronus: KOTOR was released in 2003; Jade Empire in 2005; and Mass Effect was released in November, 2007. EA bought out BioWare in October, 2007. DAO was released in 2009 and was the first BioWare game officially released under EA; but even so had been in development for years before the studio was bought out by EA. Mass Effect was published by MicroSoft Game Studios. SWTOR was originally developed as a sequel to KOTOR 2; but development was changed to an MMO shortly after BioWare was merged with EA's Mythic Entertainment (or EA Mythic) in 2009; because EA had to have a 'major' MMO in their stable after apparently.

The first games that were fully developed and released under EA/BioWare were Mass Effect 2 and DA2... which both started the trend towards action-oriented RPGs with mixed results.

That enough research for you?

@BigFeef: I'm sorry, I was with you on your rant, until you said something negative about ME2....that is the pinnacle of the series...by consensus......has Bioware gone down hill recently....no question....but it isn't an EA thing, Bioware represents a large faction of the Canadian left (very similar to the American left) and they simply let their politics get in the way of creating fully immersive games...starting, imo, with DA:I.

@Daelusca: Please; quote where I said something negative about ME2 in my post... I'll wait. English comprehension is a very good thing to have you know. And seriously; if you think this has anything to do with politics then you are an idiot. This is about making money and very little else.

But I digress; I do agree with you that ME2 is the pinnacle of the series. I enjoyed ME3 more than ME2 and would say it was better if not for the anticlimactic ending. Making the Mass Effect series more action-oriented actually worked well, to be honest, because it was a shooter at heart anyway. It didn't work so well for the Dragon Age series though... which is why I said "mixed results" in my post.

@BigFeef: Hmmm, let's take a closer look at that.; you were responding to someone that said EA damaged Bioware. So, when you said this:

"The first games that were fully developed and released under EA/BioWare were Mass Effect 2 and DA2... which both started the trend towards action-oriented RPGs with mixed results."

that isn't negative about ME2?....would you categorize that as a positive comment?....please walk me through this "English comprehension" you speak of...lol...fools and their logic :)

@Daelusca: ME2 is not the pinnacle of anything. It dumbed down the RPG elements into more shooty shoot shoot.

@Thanatos2k: So you aren't a ME fan....I would have thought you would have hated ME 1 as it was an Xbox exclusive and as a flaming pony that should make it a trash game....no?

@Daelusca: I played ME1 on the PC, where I play most games. It's also the best game in the series.

Oops, did that destroy your narrative?

@ditronus: KOTOR and Mass Effect 1 were done before the buyout, and the majority of DA:O was also done before the buyout. I think you're the one who needs to do research. EA bought them while they were working on SWTOR.

I think the really disappointing thing is that they didn't put the IP on hiatus before they released Andromeda.

@Richardthe3rd: Yes, actually finishing and polishing the game could have avoided most of this fiasco, except for the horrible voice acting, and writing, and shallow companions, and...what what i saying?

mass effect created after star wars kotor. bioware created its own star wars universe not to pay lucas.

but now ea has all star wars rights. so no need for mass effect.

its sad but don't expect any mass effect game for a loooooong time.

its a dead ip now.

Since when did "size" become an expected quality of a bioware game? It was usually the opposite: you had small play areas with interesting NPCs that gave many opportunities to make meaningful decisions towards unique outcomes.

They scrapped all this for dreary, bland land mass. It used to be about player agency, but now it's about the sheer quantity of menial fetch quests in an oversized MMO-esque zone.

@ditronus: Seriously. Look at their best games across their history, like Baldur's Gate 1/2 and KOTOR. These games were not obsessed with size. KOTOR especially is not a game that takes place in especially large areas.

Size was never the point. Size only became the point when EA noticed Skyrim sold a metric shit-ton of copies and ordered Bioware to copy them at every turn, oblivious to the fact that different people want different things out of different games.

@ditronus: Yeah, I don't get why people love open world so much. Few games actually have meaningful worlds full of content. Meanwhile, you've got Dragon Age: Origins with like 50+ hours worth of game with every playthrough.

@Barighm: Open world games are some of the best games made(if done right). Games like Witcher 3, Skyrim, Zelda, are great examples of done right. Games like Assassin's Creed, Mafia 3, MEA, the latest Far Cry games, just empty worlds filled with fetch quests and climb, this tower, climb that tower, now go get all the things. ME done in a RIGHT open world along with a story ME is known for would be a goty contender.

@Barighm: Open world alone is not the issue, it's open ended choices as well. Linear missions and paths are boring. People want to do things in their own time and order. This game allows that to a great extent.

@Thanatos2k: It actually does. That is the epitome of linear. no deviation, therefore do it the way they want you to do it. Like Splinter Cell. Alleys you can't go down, and buildings you can't enter. But they are there. One way in. Do the objectives in the order you are told to do them.

@topgun182: You're not actually reading into the subtext. I'll repeat, and highlight the relevant portions.

Well written linear missions and paths always beat out bland infinite choice nonsense.

Do you see? The point is that putting effort into it makes it better, not whether you choose open world or not.

@Thanatos2k: I read it just fine. It doesn't negate what I said, so it's irrelevant. I just finished Sniper Elite 4. What made it enjoyable for me was choosing my plan of attack, taking my time, and being able to complete objectives however I see fit. If I replay those missions, I can take a completely different approach to reach the outcome I want. I don't care HOW well written a linear mission is, it will always play out the same way, so why do it again?

@topgun182: Oh, I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt that you were just misunderstanding, but you TRULY think garbage like Sniper Elite is better than well crafted games just because it's open world.

Well, thanks for letting us know you have bad taste in games. I bet Ubisoft is your favorite company.

@Thanatos2k: Well, I wasn't really looking for your approval, I gave you a couple of examples. The game was enjoyable to me. The fact that you call it garbage when it got a 78 metacritic score tells me to ignore anything you have to say about any game's writing or quality. It's ok to have a bad opinion, it's foolish to expect it to be universal...

If you're moving their people to other projects make sure you quality control their work to make sure they don't taint said projects. "No Terry, faces don't look or move like that. Here why don't you 3d model some toilets or something?"
