Interplay Entertainment has confirmed its licensing agreement with Warner Bros. to develop games based on the upcoming Matrix sequels. The multiyear agreement encompasses both current and next-generation video game consoles, including the PC, the Sony PlayStation 2, and the Microsoft Xbox. The Laguna Beach, Calif.-based Shiny Entertainment will develop at least the first series of games, which should be released in conjunction with the second film's debut sometime in 2002. Specific details regarding the first game to be developed under the agreement are scarce at this time, but according to a Variety report yesterday, it will be in the action-adventure genre.

GameSpot spoke with Dave Perry, president of Shiny Entertainment, regarding the announcement. Although he is unable to discuss specifics at this time, Perry and his development team are genuinly enthusiastic about working with the Matrix franchise. "I can't give any details right now, but I am very very excited to be working so closely with the Wachowski brothers on such an amazing project--I loved the movie," Perry commented. "In my personal opinion, this is not just a typical licensing deal, it's an important milestone showing how Hollywood and video game companies can forge creative relationships. As we shall prove, having this relationship in place will enhance the experience for both gamers and the fans of the movies."

Interplay, along with other unnamed publishers, have been in negotiations with Warner Brothers for several months. It is expected that the film's creators, Larry and Andy Wachowski, will be closely involved with the game's development and has already made several visits to Shiny Entertainment's studio to discuss specific game ideas. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the licensing fees could be as high as 8-10 million dollars.

The second and third Matrix films will begin filming in and around Oakland, Calif. in March of this year. Matrix 2 is currently on schedule to be released around Christmas 2002, so the game releases should also be planned for that time. Information regarding specific aspects of the Matrix video games is likely to be kept under wraps for some time.
