Matt Damon on Why He Hasn't Worked With Ben Affleck in a While

"The big issue is time for us."

Actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck famously worked together on 1997's Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting and they even run a production company together. However, they haven't teamed up in a while, and now Damon has explained why that is.

In a recent Reddit AMA to promote Jason Bourne, Damon was asked if he would ever work with Affleck again to write a movie. In short, he and Affleck are just too busy, Damon said. Times have changed since they made Good Will Hunting together.

"Good Will Hunting obviously is the most influential movie in my life, and in Ben's life, and bringing it to the screen kind of dominated our 20s. It took five years to get it from the time we started to the time it came out, it took five years," he said (via Entertainment Weekly). "So I would love to write another script with Ben; I love Ben, I love his work, he's been my buddy for 35 years.

"The big issue is time for us. We have a company together so we work on a lot of projects together, but to try to carve out the time is really tough," he added. "I mean we both have a whole mess of kids now, and these other days jobs. He's directing all the time and I'm off working with these other directors."

Damon said people should remember that when he and Affleck wrote Good Will Hunting, they were unemployed and had no deadline.

"Nobody was expecting it, so we were just these two idiots in our basement writing this thing, and now we have all of these pressures of the lives grownups have," he explained.

Damon went on to say he has a "never say never" attitude about potentially working with Affleck again. He added that he would also be up to act in one of his movies, but there's a problem...

"He just keeps giving himself the best roles, so until he stops doing that and maybe just directs, none of us can really work with him," Damon said.

Last week, Damon said he would consider playing a superhero in a new movie, but only if it had the right director, someone like Affleck.

Damon's Jason Bourne opens in theaters on July 29.
