Medal of Honor franchise taking a rest

After disappointing Warfighter launch, EA confirms series will take a break while company plans new ideas.

The Medal of Honor franchise is taking a break. Electronic Arts announced today that after Medal of Honor: Warfighter missed sales expectations, the series is being taken "out of rotation."

No Caption Provided

It is not clear what this means for developer Danger Close Games. An EA representative told GameSpot this afternoon that the studio has no announced projects.

"We haven’t announced a new project for the Medal of Honor development team, although there are other projects in development in Los Angeles and throughout our other EA studios," the company said. "Medal of Honor is a great franchise with a storied past. We recognize and appreciate the value of the franchise. We’re going to give Medal of Honor a rest while we plan its return. We haven’t made any decision on how or when it will return."

In years past, Battlefield and Medal of Honor games have traded off releasing every year. EA did not say which franchise could replace Medal of Honor in EA's yearly shooter rotation, though the company said more details will be shared on the next financial call in 90 days. Battlefield 4 is currently in development, with a beta to arrive later this year.

Respawn Entertainment, led by former Call of Duty designers Jason West and Vince Zampella, is currently working on a big-budget unannounced game for EA.

Good job EA. Take a once great franchise, turn it to shit with your infamous anti-midas touch, then ditch it when it "sells poorly". And for the crap cherry on top blame the franchise. F***ing morons.

Well hopefully this puts a dent in the tumor of a company that is EA. If we all stop buying from them period (or you can still buy their games second hand and not support them) yes we may lose more franchises but any game with EA's brand seared onto it is going to end up like MoH anyways. https://i.chzbgr.com/maxW500/7435369472/h8E384704/.

I find it funny how a company can release a lack luster effort of a game and then blame the series namesake for its lack of sales. Dont blame a series for your lack of innovation

How about the next one with a massive single player campaign that spans multiple stories of soldiers through out time that has earned said "Medal of Honor" for extensive feats of bravery.

You cant tell me exploring stories between the Civil War era to the Iraq War wouldn't kick ass???

@Chaos_1990 this man is spot on, they should have kept it the like the real moh franchise instead of trying to imitate the cod world. moh:aa and expansions was EPIC on pc, remember playing moh:aa somewhere around launch date on the local net café about 2002

new ideas?.. how about you dont play as a storm trooper for the tyranical U.S empire oppressing nations around the the globe, invading, occupying, drone striking and murdering everyone... but instead play as the freedom fighting resistance against the Fuehrer in chief (Obama)... would be more fun, and more relevant!

It wasn't that the game wasn't fresh, the twitch mechanic of CoD is the mainstream now to satisfy the run and gun style of the majority of players out there and the need for a new cute gimmick.

There are still a lot of players who understand a base of fire, firing lanes, and enemies dying before taking bullets, turning, and knifing you.

The major problem with this game was DC messed up the MP VOIP and teams getting broken up all the time. My friends enjoyed the game enough to suffer through these problems rather than going to a CoD rehash. We have already seen those games and there is little there new, other than a new gimmick.

My question, what is the next best shooter coming out? I've been disappointed since BF3.

Is the new Rainbow six supposed to be good? Anything else non-COD related that would be cool?

thats a good move on ea's part. more developers should think about rethinking how they can make things fresh, because it might be better for both the franchise and the companies future

It doesn't really matter if the game takes place in WW2 or modern/near future, it's just another skin on the same basic Gameplay. The only way they're going to make it different is go back so far there are no rifles, tanks or airplanes or go so far forward they can use weapons that don't exist yet that behave markedly different from rifles, tanks or airplanes.

Note fighting Aliens in Half-Life does not feel anything like what you do in all these military shooters.

This game failed because it was too short, the story was bland and contradicted the action and the action itself didn't measure up.

@ggregd It only doesn't matter if you have no understanding or interest in history and just like to go around "shooting stuff". Playing the reenactment of the Battle of Tarawa, or the landings in Market Garden was ace stuff to me because I was interested in seeing how the battles where covered in the gaming medium. They should have not tried to copy Call of Duty, and just stayed true to the core fanbase.

It feels like EA have only just resurrected Medal of Honor, and they've already f**ked it up! I usually support the notion of learning from mistakes, but given how Warfighter was handled and promoted I think someone's head should roll.

@PlatinumPaladin MoH died after Airborne, NFS did too after Carbon, so did Crysis and a few others. I'd say EA has no head anymore.

Let's just see how Dead Space 3 turns out it's the only game from EA that i'm still followiing and the only one i might create an Origin account for.

@Raxyman

I played them, and enjoyed them a lot.

You're probably behind times already.

Anyways, yes, Give it a rest, MOH, and hopefully come up with something new soon.

Besides, I REALLY ENJOYED MOH 2010 - SP is just right, but short.

MOH-Warfighter - OK SP, but STILL SHORT, not to mention, the emotional feeling in that SP game didn't cook up until the final phrases of the campaign.

@2POWERFUL MoH changed way too much... So that your sequel can be considered good, you need to add new thing and yet keep the saga true to its roots. Changing the scenario from WW2 to recent conficts are OK. Changing the control scheme and the overall mechanics of the game is not.

The new MoH are decent shooters by itself, but when you look at what MoH used to represent and what it is now... I dunno, didn't feel right for me.

And about Dead Space 3 i'm still waiting a good price, since ill be forced to use Origin...

@laser00 @Raxyman @PlatinumPaladin Actually i've just played the demo. It's not that bad really, sure, it's nothing close to the horror the first one was, but horror games i can always count on Frictional games.

I don't know if that was on purpose, but it makes sense that the game isn't horror anymore. Someone that went through all that Isaac Clarke did wouldn't likely still be afraid. I mean, nothing to lose anymore and he's already "experienced" on killing necromorphs. The last people who could solve the problem of the Church and the Marker seem like it's Clarke.

But, it's always early to say. Only after i've played the full game i can say if the franchise's still worth anything.

If they want to revitalize Medal of Honor, they should outsource it to the people who created it in the first place - West and Zampella at Respawn. Let them develop it and give them the necessary freedom (as well as funds and marketing) to make it great again.

BF3 sales, perfect competition with COD franchise, disappointing Warfighter launch and most important fans want Bad Company 3 are all the key factors that forced the EA to give MOH series a rest.

There's nothing that can be done about C&C anymore. EA proved they couldn't make C&C all the way from Generals. They went over their heads and bought Westwood, a company that knew what true C&C should be like. C&C3 sucks, so does RA3. Don't make me mention C&C4. Tiberian Sun would've been much better if EA wasn't there pushing Westwood to release it early.

Put it in the future! And by future, none of that CoD 2 rubbish (Ghost in the Shell already owns that time period). I mean starships, railguns, lasers, androids. Imagine playing a character like a Razor out of Battlestar Galactica.

It's a shame because I actually liked 2010's campaign despite it being short and linear. I liked that it took place during a real war happening at the same time with the focus on the men fighting in it. One of the few games where I actually cared about the characters as opposed to just thinking they were cool. But at the end of the day, games are about the gameplay and Medal of Honor just didn't stand out.
