Medal of Honor Warfighter gets military-only edition

EA partners with GovX for exclusive version of shooter to be sold only to military; publisher establishes Project Honor soldier awareness program.

A new version of Electronic Arts' upcoming modern-day first-person shooter Medal of Honor Warfighter will be available only to active, reserve, and former US military. The publisher has announced the Medal of Honor Warfighter Military Edition for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

The Medal of Honor Warfighter Military Edition is not for everyone.
The Medal of Honor Warfighter Military Edition is not for everyone.

The new iteration of the game comes as part of a partnership with GovX, an online shopping destination for active-duty, reserve, and retired members of the US Armed Forces and related government agencies. Medal of Honor Warfighter Military Edition includes the game's limited edition as well as exclusive in-game unlocks.

EA also announced Project Honor, a new program focused on "raising awareness and generating charitable contributions for fallen warriors from the Special Operations Community in honor of the sacrifices they and their families have made for their country." As part of this program, real-world weapon and gear manufacturers like Kaenon, London Bridge Trading, Magpul, SureFire, Mechanix Wear, and others will have their products featured in Medal of Honor Warfighter to "help deliver the most authentic videogame warfare experience."

Additionally, these partners will sell Medal of Honor-themed merchandise in their respective stores and donate 100 percent of proceeds to the Navy SEAL Foundation, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, and other charities. London Bridge Trading, for example, is currently offering a series of Medal of Honor patches through its online store.

EA's Project Honor follows Activision's Call of Duty Endowment (C.O.D.E) in assisting war veterans and their families. C.O.D.E. was established in 2009 by Activision CEO Bobby Kotick as a means to help veterans find careers after the completion of their military service. All proceeds from 2011's Call of Duty: XP event--which sold out of every $150 ticket--went to this organization.

Medal of Honor Warfighter is due out for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 23 in North America and October 26 in Europe. The game follows a group of US Tier 1 operators as they take the fight to terrorists around the world in locations like the Philippines and Somalia.

Gamers who preorder the title will receive Medal of Honor Warfighter Limited Edition, which grants users the US Navy SEAL Tier 1 Sniper on day one. This unlock would otherwise require about 40 hours of gameplay to acquire. For more on Medal of Honor Warfighter, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story indicated that Medal of Honor Warfighter Military Edition would be available to military, law enforcement, and government personnel. The game will actually be available only to active, reserve, and former US military. GameSpot regrets the error.

As an active duty service member currently deployed in Afghanistan, I definitely appreciate the gesture. I think it's an awesome idea and am definitely looking forward to this game, even before I read the article I was already planning on a pre-order. Game looks amazing! Thanks EA for honoring us who serve and showing some love for the good ol' U. S. of A!!!

One important thing to remember is that Medal of Honor (2010) was banned in U.S. military posts nationwide. It was originally due to the controversy of being able to play as the Taliban. Taliban was later dubbed "OpFor" for "Opposition Force", but the game still remained banned. I feel that Danger Close is making a Military Edition to bounce back from last game's loss, both in sales and reputation. I wouldn't take it personally that they are making a Military Edition. On the contrary, recognize their affirmation of support for the U.S. troops.

@KnightWolf357

I personally won't be able to purchase it, but I am happy for the soldiers that get to.

Many members of my family (men and women) are or have served in the military, all honorable, and I'm sure I'll end up seeing/playing the content with them eventually. (Due to medical issues, military service was never an option for me).

**Much love and respect to our soldiers, and special thanks to our allies (hey, you need your friends too!).

@Tidal_Abyss If members in your family have served, they can purchase it and can share theirs with you. GovX specifically states this. Hope you get your chance!

@Spory I really like how when Danger Close goes that extra mile to put other SF units in the game, the only thing people can do is whine about how other countries don't get a military only edition. Sure, maybe they could have done that, but honestly they didn't have to put other units in the game in the first place. You should be glad that other units are in the game and are getting at least some recognition.

@11B10MOS excuse me? when did i dispute the nature or morality of any man in service???! when did i say anything anti war?? educate yourself before flinging that shit at me brother, i have for the record lost family and friends who fought hard in wars from irag through to world war 1 and ive no doubt beyond that too. They, along with your friends, gave me the right to freedom of my opinion, not that my opinion ever degraded anything they or anyone else died for.

I strongly feel that profiting off of death is bad business , it good that monies is for vets, possibly families of vets, etc, but the manufactures of materials for sale?. I feel, if your are going to do something for someone, it should be done from the heart without expecting anything in return. As a vet, I do not feel these companies , or EA is doing it from the heart . If the jesture was mine, 100 percent would go to the vets period.

Also I am one of the few and proud who will be able to take part of this special edition if you get my drift.

I hope the Military Edition will actually contribute a part of its proceeds to help current and former soldiers and their families. At least make it cheaper to buy. Otherwise I don't see what good some extra unlocks will do. Will it make real soldier's characters more "authentic" than the average player? Will it mark certain players as real soldiers? Is that what our armed forces members want?

As for Project Honor, long story short. How much of EA's own money is it donating to the Special Forces community? I think C.O.D.E started with $125,000 of Activision's own money to the Paralyzed Veterans of America. I, and I hope others too, just don't care about EA's proceeds from items made and sold by others.

I don't think EA has any business licensing MoH to manufacturers of real world military gears in the first place. Warfare is serious business where games have no part. When you die, you don't just go to the store and return the game. You never buy or play another game ever again.

@LeMeAtOm EA has never said that any other military in the world is inferior nor did @johnnybowman . It makes sense that an American company would make a deal that is only in America. If Poland makes a game and decides to make a deal with the Polish military, that is their choice and is good of them to recognize and offer special deals to their country's military.

I'm appalled that a globally marketed game seeks only to recognise the endeavours of one nations military, I've been a big fan of the series and looking forward to this, but my respect is waning after this..... bitter disappointment, and I'm sure I wont be the only one to react this way. way to alienate your global market with your rose tinted national pride EA! :(

@LeMeAtOm Since they are an American company, and an American developer....they are showing their patriotism by doing this. I applaud them for it. They obviously care a lot about supporting our service men and women and have no problem showing it. Myself being former military, will definitely be picking up this Military Only version.

@deuely I have nothing against the developer, or the american forces, i just feel that if there is a military only version, why can't it be released to all NATO forces? the portrayed conflicts are NATO after all, not civil. why cant anyone understand what i am trying to say?

@LeMeAtOm I dont know man lol. I cant speak for the dev and why they decided not to release a military only version to a bunch of different countries. They wanted to provide a military only version to the US military....so thats what they did. And as for NATO...they can kiss my ass. We should pull out of NATO and the UN tomorrow. We spend way too much time worrying about other peoples problems and not enough time worrying about our own.

@LeMeAtOm Their partner is the US military and their scheme is to help US soldiers that are suddenly unfit for duty...I don't see what the problem is.....although it maybe because Im from a country where the government just says "Our soldiers are trained to handle any situation" when all they really do is sit in camp in a paid holiday to austrailia

@zulwalks my point is, if the game is expected to be a global franchise, marketed to all the western world at the least. Then why is it that the courtesy of respecting all their ally nations that have fought so vigorously beside them, all the while we must pay homage to the US military alone by buying this game. It's a bit one sided i feel.

@johnnybowman I'm totally relaxed my friend, and i appreciate you understand where im coming from. I don't agree that we all have a separate interest in our fighting though, other than perhaps the butt kissing between heads of state which is in keeping with their own interests of course, in a fragile economic existence that seems to be manifesting itself all the time. I'm pretty sure that the eradication of global terrorism and the sanctity of nations that seek to decay without our help is of a common interest, not just Americas.

but damn, this is all getting a bit political... i didnt mean for that to happen :/

@LeMeAtOm Those other nations should seek to make those type of deals with EA.

It is not their responsibility to our in their interest to do what you are asking.

I am also sure it would be much harder for them to secure those same deals with all other nations since if they did one ally they would have to do them all.

Also those countries are fighting for their own interest not America's.

I understand what you are saying, but you need to relax.

@LeMeAtOm So EA does something for one military in the world and you complain? Really? How about next time, they do nothing for everybody and just sell their game. Then everyone will be happy and we can hold hands and sing songs together.

And just as a lucky guess, I'm betting that the "military only" content will become our overpriced DLC.
