Ahead of Sonic Boom's release later this year, Sega today announced an all-new character for the Sonic the Hedgehog universe: Sticks. She will play an "integral role" in the overall Sonic Boom universe, appearing in not only the game, but also the TV show and merchandising.
Sticks is described as a "jungle badger who has spent most of her life living alone in the wilderness." She rounds out the Sonic Boom roster, joining mainstays like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy--all of whom received significant character design overhauls for the game.
"Sticks is a significant addition to the Sonic Boom universe and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise," Sonic chief content officer Hiroyuki Miyazaki said in a statement. "She brings a quirky personality and perspective to the team dynamic, and we look forward to sharing this energetic and funny new character with the world."
Sticks is said to be the "most primal character in the Sonic universe" and a "force of nature in every way." She is voiced by Nika Futterman, a prolific voice actress featured on shows like CatDog and Hey Arnold! as well as video games including Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Army Men 3.
"Sticks is wilder than the other members of Sonic's team with unparalleled animal instincts and extremely sharp survival skills," Sega says. "She's a fearsome combatant and a tenacious hunter who's armed with handmade weapons at all times, most notably a handmade boomerang that she keeps in tow."
Because she's from the wilderness, she lacks social skills and she's not very trusting, Sega explains. Though the concepts of sharing, compassion, and friendship are alien to her, Sticks has a "good heart and a genuine desire to get closer to her new friends," specifically Amy, who helps her get acquainted with civilization.
Sonic Boom is in development for Wii U and 3DS. There's also a TV show and a toy line in the works, all of which will be available later this year. For more on Sonic Boom, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
