Mega Man 11 Finally Revealed With New Art Style; Coming To Switch, PS4, Xbox One, And PC

Here's what's next for Mega Man.

Capcom celebrated the 30-year anniversary of Mega Man during a livestream this week. After teasing that it would be an event fans wouldn't want to miss, the publisher shared several announcements--the most significant of which is the reveal of a brand-new game, Mega Man 11.

There aren't many details at this point, but we do know Mega Man 11 will be released for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It's due out in 2018 and is being directed by Koji Oda, with Kazuhiro Tsuchiya on board as a producer. We got a brief look at some gameplay in a video--check it out above.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Mega Man 11 Announced For PS4, Xbox One, Switch, And PC

Like its predecessors, Mega Man 11 is still a 2D side-scrolling action-platformer. During the stream, the developers said that the overriding goal in development is to "resurrect" Mega Man. Fundamentally, it looks very similar to past Mega Man games, although it does feature a noticeably different art style. One key visual difference is that Mega Man's appearance will change when acquiring a new weapon--not just his color.

A release date more specific than 2018 was not shared, and it may be some time before we learn much more about the project. Capcom said we'll receive more information next summer. Also during the stream, we learned that all eight Mega Man X games are headed to the same platforms as Mega Man 11 in 2018. Additionally, both Mega Man Legacy Collection and Legacy Collection 2 are headed to Switch in 2018 with some form of Amiibo support.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: it doesn't have to be everything at once, but those are the series I would want instead of this Megaman

My angus is peppered. I'll be picking up X1-X6 on the Switch (hopefully they're not in a collection because X7 and X8 have no value), both Legacy Collections, and probably Mega Man 11 too. Not a fan of the new art style to be honest but I haven't been into any other look for Mega Man (the original series) since they first did something different with it with Mega Man 7. For some reason Mega Man X worked out wonderfully but for the original series they've been trying to make him cute on every platform outside of the NES and it's just irritating to look at.

@jinzo9988: Megaman 7 and M&B looked good enough. I think the "cute" look started with Powered Up on PSP.

Wily Wars style could work too. But alas, companies don't hire competent spriters anymore.

@kaminobenimizu: Powered Up was an abomination. I couldn't believe what I saw in the screenshots that came out for it before its release.

Looks pretty damn good! Glad to see Megaman finally making a return.

Could this mean we'll also eventually see a Legends 3? One can only hope...

Looks like a shittier version of Mighty Number 9...if that's possible. WTF don't they make a Megaman with the style of Megaman 8 only in HD? **** this 3D side scrolling bullshit. I left those crap games in thelate 90's and early 2000's

Looks super fun, I'll be grabbing this on the Switch I think!

And the X Collection... is it confirmed to be a collection? I've heard people say they're going to sell them separately, which would suck a bit.

Looks good, enjoy the graphics and he looks like he moves smooth. I was interested in Mega Man 9 and 10, but I didn't like the 8 Bit NES graphics. Hopefully they let you play as Proto Man in this one as well, he's my personal fave. Might have to pick up the Mega Man X package, 4 to 6 was great.

well, it looks a lot better than mighty number nine, that's for sure. this engine seems much more competent. that said, megaman moves a bit sliggishly and his animations look bland. they should have gone sprite based for the characters over 3d backgrounds rather than 3d for everything. but alas capcom took the easy way out like most developers these days. other than vanillaware, the m2 team (devs responsible for skull girls), studio mdhr and a few others, it seems like nobody is capable of high res 2d art anymore. why is that? you would think megaman is a franchise deserving of the extra care and attention to the aesthetic, especially since it would make the gameplay smoother and more responsive...

won't be buying the megaman collection unless they put out the entire collection on one disc... even if they charge a bit more for it i would take that over 3 separate releases which is a bit ridiculous for a lot of 20 games that would fit under 1GB.

@Xristophoros: Same thing that happened with kid shows. The only thing is that the 3D in most kid shows is ugly as heck.

3D is far cheaper to produce compared to good quality 2D, let alone top quality 2D with over 600 frames.

Skullgirls has over 900 frames per character, from what this site says.

@kaminobenimizu: yea, it's a shame really. capcom has more than enough money to dedicate to megaman. i mean, if an indi team of 20 can put together cup head, which mind you, was entirely 2d (all i am asking for here is 2d for the characters), why can't a large company like capcom manage something like that? there just isn't a will and interest i suppose which says it all.

@Xristophoros: Well, at least it leaves us with a fighting chance. If all companies wanted to be top notch all the time, would there even be an indie scene (well, as big as it is today)...? Dang, tis scary to me!

no x9, thank you capcom for being idiots and dropping the ball again. We've had original megaman games since x8 yet the X series fans are still waiting this was the time to give news on x9 after at least putting the main 3 characters in the marvel vs capcom game few months back. Brain dead morons for releasing a part 11 game over an x9. Im not excited for this game or the x collection, really wanted an x9 it was time and been too too long

@mito-eve: Mega Man 9 and 10 were really well received, I just didn't care for the 8 bit NES era graphics they chose. Was mad too because they allowed you to play as Proto Man, my personal favorite. I do enjoy the style they've gone with here, hopefully they'll allow for Proto Man play as well.

My reaction to the new Megaman 11 game "FREAKIN YEEEEEES!!!!" I'm so soooooo happy they decided to quit the 8-bit trend, I'm sorry but the graphic choice for mm9 and mm10 was just bad, at the very least they should have picked the Megaman 8/ & Bass sprites, would have looked MUCH better.

My reaction to the Megaman X games coming to PC "all 8 games?....including X7........? eeeeehhhhh...oooookkkkk I guess?"

But Capcom could also sweeten the deal by adding Maverick Hunter X as well, in fact what happened to Megaman X series remake? I distinctly remember them saying they wanted to remake all 6 X games.

I can't turn my nose up at a new Megaman game, especially an old fashioned side-scrolling run & gun game.

The 3-D character models aren't too appealing but at least the speed of the gameplay doesn't seem to suffer like Megaman 8. There's a weird "skating" sensation happening with the run animation, but I'm pretty optimistic about the game in general since it IS coming too the Nintendo Switch.

I just hope they take care and not repeat Mighty No.9's mistake of applying challenges and principles to a 2.5D game that only work well in sprite-based games. It would really cut down on the frustration factor.

@professor_megaman: I personally love the artstyle... It could only have been better if it looked more like a full on cartoon... Guilty Gear has that nailed down to perfection. 3D character models that look like hand drawn and hand animated cartoons (with minor exceptions).

You're entitled to your opinion, of course, so, hopefully the art style won't completely ruin it for you when it releases :)

@consolehaven: As long as it plays good and doesn't suffer from collision issues or input lag, I can happily overlook the art style.

While I'm happy there is something. I'm dissapointed in fans who want needless sequels. We need series tied to the next in the mythos and we need ZX 3 and Legends 3 above all else. But we have to use this opportunity to show Capcom we need Mega Man. Whatever comes out next I'll get. I can't really rebuy Legacy Collection again for the 5th time or so but everything else I will get. And say no to merchandising. We need more games developed and a new gen to see what it's all about.

I still wish ZX3 and Legends 3 can be made via partnerships from Inti Creates and Comcept however. We need Inafune's vision intact.
