Megan Fox's Mortal Kombat 1 Performance Isn't Going Over Well

Some fans aren't happy with how she delivered her lines.

NetherRealm Studios' fighting game Mortal Kombat 1 is currently available to those who paid a little extra. Since its release, fans have reacted to various details in-game, including Megan Fox's voice performance as Nitara.

Fans of the franchise were quick to point out how Fox's performance seemed lackluster compared to the rest of the cast. If you look up "Megan Fox Mortal Kombat" on X (formerly Twitter), you'll see numerous tweets of fans voicing their opinion on her performance. One user wrote, "Megan Fox's performance in Mortal Kombat 1... sure is something, ain't it?" Another user seemed more directed, saying, "If I had one criticism of the game though, it'd be Megan Fox. Her performance as Nitara is so bad. Every word that she speaks is flat."

Now Playing: Mortal Kombat 1 Everything To Know

There's no shortage of posts expressing a similar sentiment. Although Fox has received criticism for her performance in things like cutscenes and fight intros, not all of Nitara's voice lines have been an issue. Cristina Vee Valenzuela, widely known as the voice of Miraculous Ladybug, confirmed on Twitter recently that they had voiced all of Nitara's battle cries.

It's also worth pointing out that this isn't the first time NetherRealm Studios has hired celebrities to voice characters in its games. In 2019, WWE wrestler Ronda Rousey voiced Sonya Blade in Mortal Kombat 11, and fans had similar complaints about her performance. In addition to her, the studio also managed to get Jean-Claude Van Damme to voice himself in MK 1 as a skin for Johnny Cage.

Shocking. "Should Megan Fox star in video games?" was a question nobody ever asked because we already knew the answer. Might as well have asked whether squirrels poop in trees....or crazy actresses poop in beds....

I just looked it up on YouTube,
and yes, it's pretty bad,
and yes, it's worse than the other characters.
It's also quieter in the mix than the others for some reason.
Look it up before saying that it's fine and it's merely people hating on Megan Fox.

There's a disconnect between what your eyes are telling you and what your ears are telling you.
Your eyes are telling you there's a ferocious beast-warrior-princess-looking thing,
and your ears are telling you there's a tired girl reading lines in a recording booth.

Kinda like the Beyonce thing in the 2019 The Lion King reboot.

@naryanrobinson: Oh no, they put Beyonce in another movie? Only good role I've seen her in was in Cadillac Records.

Sports fans and gamers have got to be the nuttiest groups of people on Earth, and gamers are inching closer to the equivalent of a British soccer fan with every article.

I bet if people did not know it was Megan Fox, they wouldn't notice anything.

@xgalacticax: That’s not true at all. The second I heard Sonya’s voice lines, i recoiled with cringe and that was before I knew it was Ronda. Companies always have these “grand” ideas to get celebrities to play characters, but never seem to realize (or care) that they can’t voice act to save their lives. They pay for the name, rather than doing it the old fashioned way; having auditions and giving the job to the best person.

@xgalacticax: Ya. I don’t care about celebrity voice acting, don’t think I like anything that Megan Fox was involved in, and still, sometimes I think the gaming community is way too weird and angry…

Everyone just figured out that when you can't see her midriff and cleavage, you suddenly notice her complete inability to act.

This and Ada Wong are examples of picking people on who they are rather than what they can do.

Guessing as well Megan Fox cost more than average rando voice actor.

@uninspiredcup: Right? Game budgets are getting massive, but there are some easy savings right there. The fact they had to hire a second, real voice actor to do the battle cries just makes it even more absurd.

Maybe Megan Fox should just respond to criticism in the most trendy way now, by claiming that any/all criticism of her voice acting is motivated by discrimination.

I think the bigger issue is getting actors that aren't typically trained in or don't specialize in voice acting (VA) to do these parts. Sure the celebrity presence is nice to have, but without proper VA training like Cristina Valenzuela has (she voices Shantae as well), you're going to get a performance bereft of any oomph or emotion.

What really surprises me is that she has done VA work before in the Transformers video game series. I wonder if she was just underwhelmed at this role and didn't take it as enthusiastically as fan may have expected.

First of all, I see no problem with her performance. It’s rubbish, but so are the rest in general. She’s just an easy target.

The bigger issue is the fact that they wasted money on a celebrity in the first place. Who cares that Megan Fox is the voice of a character? Who’s stoked about that? No one. Video game companies need to learn that gamers generally don’t care about seeing celebrities in games except in very particular cases. They coulda used that cash and put it toward making the cutscenes not look like 480p Res.
