Men In Black Movie Reboot Adding A Fast And Furious Director - Report

In October, it was reported that Sony was fast-tracking a reboot of the hit sci-fi comedy series Men in Black, and that it would no longer be a crossover with the Jump Street movies as previously reported. It has now been revealed that The Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Grey is being lined up to direct.

According to Deadline, Grey is in "negotiations" to helm the Men in Black reboot. Original stars Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are not returning to the series, and the franchise will be relaunched with a brand-new cast. The site states that the movie will "focus on new characters chasing villains that put the picture on more of a global scale than the two previous films." It hits theaters on June 14, 2019.

Grey has had considerable box office success over the past few years. The Fate of the Furious earned $1.2 billion worldwide, making it the second biggest film in the Fast and Furious franchise so far. Prior to that, his 2015 hip-hop biopic Straight Outta Compton earned $201 million worldwide, from a modest $28 million budget.

The Jump Street crossover does reportedly remain in development at Sony however. In 2016, it was reported that the movie would be titled MIB 23 and that The Muppets director James Bobin was in the running to helm the project.

All three original Men in Black movies were big box-office hits. Although the third movie was not as well received critically as the first two, it still made $624 million at the worldwide box office. In total, the whole series has made more than $1.6 billion.
