Meta Lays Off 11,000 Workers After Stock Slides Nearly 20%

Facebook owner Meta has laid off 11,000 workers, or roughly 13% of its staff, following a number of negative financial indicators.

Meta, the company formerly known as Facebook, is now in the process of laying off 13% of its staff. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the news to staff in a letter on Wednesday, November 9, explaining that the layoffs were enacted to "become a leaner and more efficient company."

Meta's stock slid by nearly 20% back in October when the company announced its guidance for Q4 (fourth quarter) earnings. Meta's costs and expenses rose nearly 20% year-over-year in Q3 of 2022, while its overall sales declined 4% and its operating income dipped by 46%. Needless to say, this was not the news that investors wanted to hear.

In the letter, Zuckerberg further states that Meta will ease its usual recruiting numbers for 2023, including a hiring freeze in Q1. Those who have been laid off will receive 16 weeks of pay, with an additional two weeks for every year of service. The severance also includes six months of health insurance coverage.

Meta has struggled over the past year, as it continues to dump money into the as-yet-unproven "metaverse" concept. In a recent investor call, Zuckerberg reiterated the company's devotion to building such a platform, noting that metaverse-related expenses will "grow significantly year-on-year."

Comments, vids, gifs, photos, experiences... ol zucks just waiting with his out of touch self thinking were gonna bring him the metaverse and build it for him so that once again, he doesnt have to do any real work.

Any of you out there still on Facebook, you are part of the problem. Allow this social media turd, that has allowed autocratic dictators around the world to send dangerous misinformation to the masses, and helped to cause the loss of life, and democracy.

After Meta has gone the way of MySpace, and Pets.Com, these workers can find other jobs, maybe actually doing the world some good. Like, IDK, adoption of non carbon energy solutions, creating new life saving mediations, or .... faster porn streaming.... really important shit here.

Someone needs to hold Zuck accountable for his serious mistakes. His employees suffer the consequences, but Zuck escapes any real serious consequences. Worker's rights!

@wshwe: Well he personally, (in one way or another) owns 55% of the shares.... and it is hard for the Federal Trade Commission to do anything actually. If he only had a minority stake or was insider trading, or just about anything else... they could. But your right, the whole Idea of a corporation, was that countries could hold them accountable, could set rules and regulations. But that idea has mutated into what is now, more powerful then religion. Also paying almost no taxes. It is insanity. The idea of laying people off, would increase corporate shares is actually new, and would not be a thing back in the pre 80s and 90s.

As consumers, we can simply... not drink the kool aide. I cut Facebook in 2012 after several security breaches and do not miss it at all. And the people that are still left on there.... makes me miss it even less. The biggest message the world can send old Zuck, is .... take your Meta and Zuck off.

When you work at a company that actually produces nothing, it is a mass media of ... .social media. The content or direction is AT the whims of its board of directors... well in this case, a board of Zuck. So those workers, well they kinda knew when they signed on, it was gonna be a bumpy ride, and nothing is guranteed.

@wshwe: he could close up shop and fire them all he owes them nothing but what the law allows. Shareholders on the other hand may have something to say about his performance.

@naydazng7: He could resign as CEO, resign from the board and sell all of his shares in the company. Zuckerberg has literally wrecked Meta.
