Metal Gear Franchise Sales Top 49 Million as Konami Profits Increase

The pachinko business falters while traditional games see a bump in revenue.

Konami has released its earnings report for its first fiscal quarter, which ended on June 30, and while revenue dropped slightly, it also saw a jump in profits.

Revenue for the quarter was 49.4 billion yen (about $481.5 million), down 3.5 percent from what the company generated during the same period last year. Operating profit, though, was up 9.1 billion yen ($88.7 million)--up 40.2 percent year-over-year.

This comes despite the company's pachislot business taking a big hit, earning 88.2 percent less in revenue than last year and actually losing money for the quarter. Konami can thank its Health and Fitness category and, to a larger extent, its Digital Entertainment segment (which covers console and mobile games) for turning a profit.

Digital Entertainment revenue was up 5.6 percent to 25.2 billion yen ($245.5 million), with profit up 34.3 percent to 8.7 billion yen ($84.7 million). Most of the new games contributing to this were limited to Japan; games like Jikkyou Pawafuru Puroyakyu 2016 (the latest in Konami's Power Pro baseball series) were only released in Konami's native country. Its one international release was the UEFA Euro 2016 update for PES 2016, which was given away for free as an apology for issues with the game's rosters. Other worldwide contributors were mobile games Star Wars: Force Collection and PES Club Manager.

Konami had little to share regarding upcoming projects, including what that recent Metal Gear Solid V listing on Amazon might be, if anything. It did reveal that the Metal Gear franchise had now sold 49.2 million units.

It also spoke briefly about that Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater pachislot game that's sure to frustrate fans with how good its remastered cinematics look. With its pachislot and pachinko business struggling this quarter, Konami indicated one of the things it intends to do is leverage its "original contents, including accumulated expertise in the Digital Entertainment business." That may suggest this Snake Eater machine is not a one-off in terms of using a big Konami franchise as the basis for a pachislot machine.

They put all their eggs in Pachinko and that business is failing. Meanwhile they gave up on videogames and it's the only one making them any money.

With zero games on the horizon Konami is in big big trouble.

So, basically, their report is due to MGSV. Hope their shareholders are happy, because they are about to find themselves on a sinking ship if they don't sell while they can.

This is sad news to hear. Konami shouldn't even know what "Profit" means after all the shit they've pulled. Now they are releasing a "Definitive" Edition of MGSV for no good reason.

SUIKODEN!!!!!!

Sadly, I think Konami has forgotten that intellectual properties that they own other than MGS actually exist.

And, sadly, since I'm not a MGS fan (I've tried, I really have... but that writing) Konami brings nothing at all to the table for this potential customer who spends hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars per year on his addiction.

@BeefoTheBold: Only played the very first Suikoden, that game was freaking epic. As far as I heard the countless sequels were fairly good too, some games people say are even better than the first one. Man, it was so long ago, I didn't even remember it was a Konami game.

@RogerioFM: Then it's for the best that Konami don't utilise it. They haven't made a good game in quite a long time and seem happy to whore out their beloved franchises to pachinko machines in order to try and scrape some profit because they can no longer make good or meaningful games.

50 millions, they have a series that rivals capcom's best selling franchise too. But I understand why they want out, traditional gaming dev is costly, make sense in business terms.

But fk you, at least sell suikoden series to sony or square or any jrpg dev.

Hahahaha yes Konami, keep your wagon hitched to that pachinko train as it derails and takes your company with it. Don't try to come crawling back to games now.

LOL! Good job doubling down on Pachslot & Pachinko machines, enjoyed the video game revenue while you can. Konami burnt too many bridges to recover (IMO) I never wish for anyone to fail but I'll be glad to see (current) Konami go out of business. Hopefully IPs & developers find themselves in the hands of someone that will appreciate and properly support them.

@JohnMafia: If you read what I said "enjoy the video game revenue while you can." I was referring to the long-term outlook of declining gambling machine profits vs rising profits in video games. Konami might make money short-term but losing so many fans, firing their best developer and treating employees poorly will cause Konami problems overtime. One quarter doesn't mean anything if Fanbase of the growing part of their business leaves overtime.

@xenomorphalien: They deserve to go out of business because they don't make AAA titles any longer, because that's what you want? You got the 40 million dollars they need to do so? Yu Suzuki got 6 million for Shenmu 3 and that's only a fraction of the cost for a AAA title that may only sell 500,000 copies putting you in the red. Imagine doing that twice a year for the last 5 years and see how long you stay in business, jackass.

@fig56: Cancelled Silent Hills, rushed MGS V, poorly treated Kojima, stopped making AAA games besides PES, and reduced their beloved franchises to Pachinko machines.

They basically just said "F*ck everything".

@xenomorphalien: Treated Kojima poorly because he was pain to work with, Cancelled Silent Hills because they were no longer creating AAA titles, Rushed MGS V because Kojima was taking too long and using up too much money to develop it(as he always does), Went into the Pachinko machine business to minimize expense and maximize profit with little investment to stop the hemorrhaging before the company went bankrupt. Thank god none of you selfish assholes run a multimillion dollar company.

@fig56: Well for starters, they give the industry a bad image, they butchered Kojima-San and further more, they own Hudson who owns Bomberman and Konami ain't making Bomberman games. So yeah...screw them.
