Speaking on stage during Kojima Productions' presentation on its new Fox engine, director Hideo Kojima says Metal Gear Solid V is both Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain combined. Snake has been in a coma for nine years, and awakens in hospital at the start of the game alongside Ishmael, the figure from The Phantom Pain whose face is in covered in bandages.

During the gameplay demo, which is set in the Metal Gear Solid V's tutorial level, Snake can't walk or move properly due to his comatose state. When he regains his mobility Metal Gear Solid V will become an open-world game, says Kojima.

Showing the first trailer for Metal Gear Solid V, footage from previous Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain trailers were spliced together alongside a handful of new scenes. Longtime series character Kazuhira Miller is also seen in the trailer.

It is currently unclear if David Hayter is reprising his role as Snake.

Kojima Productions first teased The Phantom Pain at the Spike VGA awards, saying the game was in development at Moby Dick Studios. Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes was announced in August 2012 during the Metal Gear Solid 25th Anniversary event in Tokyo.

The game was shown running on PC using Kojima's new FOX Engine, but the trailer showed logos for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

If Big Boss is really turning into a bad guy in this one, maybe they needed some other voice actor that can portray a villain better than Hayter.

Depending on how you interpret the storyline, Big Boss was never truly a 'bad guy', just on a different side to Solid Snake.

Doing something bad unknowingly doesn't make you a bad guy. This is not an opinion, but a fact. Solid Snake said in MGS2 he was fighting for the future. That's what he was doing all along. Protecting the future. Big Boss doesn't mind violence and he enjoys the thrill of battle. He is the opposite of Solid Snake. Solid Snake was agonizing the lives he had taken during MG1 and 2 prior the events of MGS1. Big Boss does not have that problem. Solid Snake IS the virtue protector of the future. He does NOT enjoy the thrill of battle and he only kills when he has to. Naked Snake went rogue and he had to be taken out. It would've been the right thing to do at that point by any kind of government, even those that wouldn't have been under Patriots' control.

*Series spoilers*:

Solid Snake was effectively an unknowing agent of the Patriots until the tanker incident in MGS2 - he was sent in to Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land to defeat Big Boss' rebellions against their control, and to Shadow Moses to defeat Liquid and Solidus' rebellion. He acted out of all the right reasons, but was reinforcing the 'illuminati' rather than helping the world.
Big Boss on the other hand was always fighting for the freedom of the world against Patriot control, he just did it in an overly aggressive way. Neither was completely in the right, it's very much a grey area.

@Mega_Loser Sometimes when a person loses a limb, for example an arm, he still experiences pain even though the arm is not there anymore. That is called phantom pain.
