Metroid: Other M Nintendo Press Conference Trailer Impressions

Nintendo and Team Ninja team up for Samus' latest adventure, and we were treated to the first trailer at the publisher's E3 press conference.

Nintendo unveiled a range of new titles for the Wii this morning at its annual E3 press conference, including New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Golden Sun DS. However, Nintendo US president Reggie Fils-Aime shocked the audience with one final reveal towards the closing moments. A new Metroid game is in the works, and the publisher is collaborating with Tecmo's Team Ninja to bring Metroid: Other M to the Nintendo Wii in 2010. Other M features the Samus Aran that fans love. However, the game's presentation and story look like quite a departure from Retro Studio's three previous Metroid Prime titles.

No Caption Provided

We saw a brief trailer during the press conference, and it looked visually stunning from the outset. The trailer began on an undisclosed planet with a female scientist having a conversation with an officer, referred to as Captain, most likely from Aran's employer, the Galactic Federation. The game looks like it will feature many of Metroid's classic elements, such as boss fights with massive creatures, including a gigantic insect that Aran climbed onto during the trailer. It looks like it will offer both a third-person perspective and a first-person visor view a la Prime.

No Caption Provided

Aran looks like she'll have some friends along the journey, and in the trailer we saw a spacesuit-wearing man talking to her. Aran's face is clearly visible through her face mask at one point in the trailer, and we also saw her briefly talking to a female scientist. Fils-Aime said Other M would be a Metroid experience "unlike any other" and would take players deeper into Samus' story and the Metroid universe. Metroid: Other M will be coming exclusively to the Nintendo Wii in 2010.

I'm all for a new Metroid game but this isn't looking too good just yet. What made the first three Prime games such a success? Stunning visuals, long gameplay, and a thrilling first person shooter experience. I hope they keep the first person aspect of it as strong as ever, and if the 3rd person aspect is equally as great, this will be a must buy for all of us.

Hmmm..... third person view? Im all for adding innovation to older franchises, yet third person view in a 3D metroid seems a little unnerving. Im afraid that Team Ninja may turn this into an all- out action game. Metroid: Other M may turn out to be what was first thought of Prime: an action game with door puzzles thrown in. lets hope that platform- adventuring stays strong. And while im at it, lets see a new 2D Metroid for the DS!!

This is the single most overwelming game I saw at E3 cause I'm a HUGE Metroid fan, and it looks like pure greatness. but like it was stated before, I hope team ninja dosn't turn Samus into a DOA character. And yet...

I'm sure I'm not the first to say this, and I'll probably sound like another barn animal who just asks "Is this game going to be rated M?" Ok. I said it. I know it has nothing to do with the title, the title means that there's another metroid, like they said at the end of the first metroid game. Thats all cool, but at E3, they were saying this game was "Kinda more for Adults"

There's no way I'm not getting this. 3rd-person 3D is a huge step forward for the metroid series and I REALLY want to see how they're going to do this. I particularly want to see how the transition between 3rd and 1st person is going to work. CAN'T WAIT!!!

I'm actually very, very concerned about this since I heard team ninja would be involved- I'm worried Team Ninja will portray Samus with the same amount of respect they portray the females in all their other games- hopefully, since Nintendo has a hand in this, it may turn out to be a great Metroid game. But fans of Metroid don't want to see Samus in one of Team Ninja's "Dead or Alive: Extreme Beach Volleyball" games. My point is- Samus is one of the most respected characters in gaming- and team ninja has shown in the past they could give a rats-as how they are portrayed. Please Nintendo, make sure they do it RIGHT!

Another awesome metroid game coming out. I can't decide which is better, Metroid prime trilogy or this. I think this game is coming out in TBA 2010 so I'm probably gonna get trilogy instead.

Looks like it could be fun! IF team ninja gets it right... if they mess this one up, i hope they never get their hands on another metroid game... ever. Surprising that Retro has nothing to do with it, considering that they were the masters behind the Prime series.

Looks amazing!! By the looks of the game It has the elements of the older metroid games in it (Side-scrolling fun) and the prime series (First-Person fun) combined together...Although I admit the HUD display was incredibly detailed in Prime. I'm sure this game won't disappoint, besides this is the first side-scrolling metroid game for a newer console!

@robotghost and hoffmabo\ Wow, you guys need to both go back and look at how people bashed the prime series before it was released. True Metroid fans argued then that Super Metroid set the standard for console Metroid games. Believe me. Super Metroid was just as fun as any Metroid, the best in my book and most Metroid fan's books and the monsters weren't staring us in the face. The Prime series did not disappoint, so just go back and look at the pre prime release chatter and don't wrap yourselves around a few early screenshots. I haven't been on a bad Metroid adventure yet and I really doubt it will start with this one.

Alright, the Prime series for the gamecube and wii were great. That's why I bought the bundle pack for all three of them, revamped wii controls for the first two games. Loved the motion controls, I was in awe the whole time at Prime 3. Metroid: Other M looks reeallly weeeiirrdd. What's with all cartoony graphics, like robotghost said, why is everything rounded and "clean" looking. They just need to stick to the grundgy original looks and leave it at that. Even the bugs look like crap, and the area that they're are in looks "fun."

I thought the first two games in the prime series were a religious experience and the third was decent, but this one is a tough call. Nintendo probably won't allow Team Ninja to screw anything up, and any big mistakes will be fixed in the sequel (we all know there's gonna be at least one). The hardest part for me will be the change in styles. Prime set a standard for Metriod games for what console-based metriod games are like, and this doesn't really follow it. The screen shots for this game seem far less and more cartoony. I mean look at the teeth on that spider-thing, way too rounded and... clean. Get some grungy, long sickle teeth in there. I will also not be taking advantage of the third person mode. Where's the fun if the monsters aren't staring you in the face?

@remixbaby44

I don't know but if so that would be great. I've been asking for more 3rd person games to go that route since Unreal Championship 2:Liandri Conflict. It definitely would help gameplay-wise as its easy to lose sight of your character in a object filled 3d environment in most 3rd person games especially when shrubbery is involved.

Not to mention the issues that sometimes plague cameras in restricted areas where for some reason they have to jump around. I hope they do let you switch at will as an option. It could all be in-game at the push of a button.

I mean if Unreal can do it for last gen why not this gen? I've always wondered why some great ideas get overlooked in favor of the status quo.

... @neock2003 Here is what I say... HEEEEELLLLL YYYYEEEEAAAHHH! I can't wait for this, team ninja made ninja gaiden, that was an awsome game (played the ds one, seen the other's) and this would go well... If done right it might be like the old metroid games (get lost exploring an open world) without rellying on first person view-I prefer that than first person to be honest... If done wrong them we get a ninja gaiden clone with samus-linier, but very pretty with plenty of action! But the result will remain the same-like the old metroid games...short...and sweet :) If this last 10 hours I will eat my nes...

Nintendo has never made a bad Mario, Zelda, or Metroid title and I really don't think it's going to start now. Plus, it's not like Nintendo is just handing it to Team Ninja and saying "OK, do what you want." They're working together. I'm optimistic that this game's going to be great.

I can summarize this game with just one word. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! WTF IS NINTENDO THINKING! This game is going to flop worse than Star Fox Assult. I can think of many companies that earned the right to create a Metroid game, but Team Ninja! The only thing I can see this company do is butcher this game to make it a glorified action game like Ninja Gaiden it dosen't even look like the old style SNES verson. And I know that a lot of people did not like the Metroid prime series, and to those people I would have to say b*$& me! because Retro Games captured what metroid is about, that is the exploration, the enemies, the puzzles, etc. The one question that I have to ask after experiencing the wost E3 ever is that what will Nintendo do to destroy my childhood, they are doing with with Metroid and Zelda with a terrible game like Spirit Tracks and they did it with every Star Fox game after the 64 version.

sheegot killzone 2 pretty much DID live up to the trailers graphics and some of it is prerendered there, but most of it isn't, there are markers to show that it isn't that developers would LOVE to get rid of ingame, but can't ie. jaggies, polygonal shapes, clipping etc. non of it is hugely apparent there (hence good graphics) but it's there

going to flop. Tecmo is NOT the right team to be working on a Metroid title. Of course, we all thought that when they showed the first screens for the prime series and we all screamed foul because it turned away from a side-scroller and went 3D. I still think this will flop though. Something about the mood in the opening scenes just didn't feel right.

WHY?! But seriously if you want to play Ninja Gaiden, go play Ninja Gaiden... I would really like a real Metroid game. The Metroid universe needs no explanation, there is great fan-fiction for the series, and being able to imagine the motivations and feelings of Samus as I play was a nice feature for me. Also Retro Studios had the series well under control, it flurished under their care. Metroid is just not meant to be an action game. But please don't understand this the wrong way. I am NOT saying that this will be a bad game. It has every right to be a good game, it just won't be Metroid.
