Metroid Prime, Donkey Kong Country Returns dev working on Wii 2 game?

Online report has Retro Studios already crafting new title for Nintendo's upcoming console.

Source: Freelance games writer Paul Gale's website.

What we heard: Since rumors about the Wii 2 first broke last week, the Internet has been abuzz with speculation about the HD-enabled device. Besides a growing consensus that the console will be shown off at--or before--the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo, there have been unconfirmed reports that it is code-named Project Cafe. Additional reports have it boasting controllers with tablet-like touch screens capable of streaming games from the console itself.

Could Donkey Kong Country Returns return on the Wii 2?
Could Donkey Kong Country Returns return on the Wii 2?

This week came another rumor that Nintendo was courting Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption developer Rockstar Games to craft a launch title for the Wii's successor. Today comes an unconfirmed report of another high-profile developer reportedly confirming that it already has a software development kit for the console--and that it's working on a title that will likely please Nintendo fans.

Citing several sources within the developer, Gale reports that Austin, Texas-based Retro Studios was one of the first companies to receive an SDK for the Wii 2. While that should not be particularly surprising, given the fact the shop is a first-party studio wholly owned by Nintendo, one source did offer a delicate tease about what it was working on. "[It's] a project everyone wants us to do," said the source.

The official story: "Nintendo does not comment on rumors or speculation." -- A Nintendo of America representative.

Bogus or not bogus?: If there are Wii 2 SDKs already in circulation, it's likely not bogus that Retro, being a part of Nintendo, already has one. The more intriguing question is what is the studio working on? Given the fact it saw critical and commercial success with the Metroid Prime trilogy, a new Metroid is a top suspect. However, the developer's most recent title, Donkey Kong Country Returns, has sold over 2 million units since its release last November, making a sequel likely as well.

I'm definitely hoping for another Metroid Prime game. Sequel or prequel, either way.

I think a new Star Fox, probably revisiting the on-rails days, is pretty likely. Personally, I'm hoping for F-Zero. GX was a very pretty game, and that was seven years ago now.

Why does a new Metroid game have to have the "Prime" tag and follow the trilogy? Maybe they're making a completely new 3-D first person Metroid title. Now that would sell some consoles, and I'd be the first in line...

It wouldn't make sense for them to even bother with the current Wii, now. If the new console comes out as soon as next year it would make much more sense to hold back just a little longer.

I'm personally hoping they pick up the next Star Fox or Pikmin. Don't get me wrong...I enjoyed Rare's Adventures and Namco's Assault, but Adventures wasn't a proper Star Fox game (still fun as heck though) and Assault failed miserably in anything that didn't involve Arwings (I loved the flight levels to death...everything else sucked IMHO). Don't even get me started on Command. So if they did the Star Fox... As for Pikmin...I'd be immensely interested in seeing how they improved on the series. Better yet...let them do something original. Hm...the possibilities. I can't wait!

Retro Studios always has good games and shows they can make quality different types of games (Metroid Prime and DK:CR. No shock that Nintendo is having one of their better developers working on new games.

the new wii2 sounds pretty cool but what i want to know is if the romote can have games transfered inside it, does that mean we can take it were ever we go because if you can then what would be the point of making the 3ds when you can play bigger and better games?

If they make another DK game i hope they bring back the Kremlings, include more animal friends, and not make it quite as hard as DKCR lol.

DKCR 2, please. Another Metroid wouldn't be bad either, as long as it plays like the trilogy.

on the note of Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong 64 3DS /if/ you can't get it on Wii VC (you should be able to, Majora's Mask needed the expansion pack to run and it worked fine on Wii VC) I think a 3DS version would be better though since a 3DS version of Ocarina of Time is comin out

Metroid Prime ended with 3, though a 4th could be possible, if anyone even bothered to 100% the game there's a ship that appears, i'd much rather them make a DKCR2 though, this time with King K. Rool, insert actual underwater levels even if you think they seem slower than molasses, we need somethin that'll be able to show off Project Cafe's capabilites

While I doubt there will be another instalment in the Metroid Prime series, maybe Retro could make the follow-on from Metroid Fusion.

@Colonel Vodka: you have a point, they could just make another 3D platformer DK. And if Nintendo does still own the rights to the other characters I'd love to see the return of Dixie, Candy, and Funky Kong.

I wouldn't doubt that Retro would be a company that got development kits first. Still not expecting too much from E3.

As great as the first 3 Metroid Prime were, Retro is sick and tired of making the franchise. Lets do them a favor. A new DK or anything. Lets remember that some key players of Retro left because Nintendo held them against their will. Source: Iwata Ask My guess is that gamers really liked Returns and Nintendo is giving more consideration to Retro. Kind of how SMG had good reactions by gamers, at least that's what Cammie said in E3 09 and Super Mario Galaxy 2 came

@ZatchSora The reason that happened to twilight princess is because the wii and gamecube were similar in power. if this console is more powerful than either the 360 or ps3 it will completely blow the wii out of the water.

New metroid would be great. Dice, Bethesda, Retro, and Valve are my two favorite studios around. It trust retro can make a great new game. who knows we could even get an awesome new ip! leave it to retro. Im confident they can make a good one.

Well regardless of how true or false the bulk of these rumors are, its obvious that Retro will do some games on a new Nintendo console. I wouldn't mind seeing them try their hand at creating a new IP, given how well they work within the confines of fan expectations for a season franchise. I would love to see what they would come up with if given free reign.

Although let's be realistic, what would a console as strong as the ps3 or 360 with tablet like controllers sell for? Atleast $800 is the lowest I can think it to be, although Nintendo is known for great pricing & such.
