Microsoft/Activision Deal Looking All But Certain As UK Gives Preliminary Approval

Activision is one step closer to becoming part of the Xbox family.

After months of deliberation, the final hurdle in front of Xbox's planned $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard is all but cleared. The last holdout, United Kingdom's regulatory board, the Competition and Markets Authority (or CMA), has given preliminary approval for the deal to move forward.

The CMA announced its ruling today, where it stated the "sale of Activision’s cloud gaming rights to Ubisoft substantially addresses previous concerns and opens the door to the deal being cleared." The board has opened discussions on Microsoft's proposal until October 6, after which a final decision is expected by the October 18 deadline.

Xbox x Activision Blizzard.
Xbox x Activision Blizzard.

Earlier this year, the CMA blocked the sale of Activision Blizzard to Microsoft, citing concerns over cloud gaming; specifically, there were fears that Microsoft would limit the streaming capabilities of Activision's games--including Call Of Duty--to its own streaming service. Since then, Microsoft has agreed to sell streaming rights for the Activision portfolio to Ubisoft, which opened the door to today's decision.

Activision Blizzard president Bobby Kotick sent a statement to all employees after the decision was announced, where he called the ruling "a significant milestone for the merger and a testament to our solutions-oriented work with regulators." He added that "this transaction will help us accelerate our ambitions for the future of gaming and enable us to better serve our players."

Brad Smith, vice-chairman and president of Microsoft, posted his reaction to the ruling on X, where he said the company was "encouraged by this positive development in the CMA’s review process. We presented solutions that we believe fully address the CMA’s remaining concerns related to cloud game streaming, and we will continue to work toward earning approval to close prior to the October 18 deadline."

First announced in January 2022, the sale of Activision Blizzard to Microsoft will give the Xbox brand first-party access to multiple top-selling franchises, a list which includes the aforementioned Call Of Duty, Diablo, Crash Bandicoot, Overwatch, and more.

As Blizzards are on a major downwards spiral at the moment, After destroying Diablo4 and Overwatch2, Microsoft need to take some control rather than let them continue destroying their fanbase.

Microsoft can't make good 1st party games, so they buy up companies like Bethesda, Activision and Blizzard so they get back as Sony.. Wow!!! Lame!

Makes me hate them even more for acting this way. Bethesda, Activision and Blizzard made games for both. Microsoft if just being a little b.

@GeminiEntity: Psygnosis was a publisher and developer.
Reading comprehension is not your strenght.
As fanboys tend to do, you just ignore facts, grasp at straws and look for any excuse.
Have a good day.

@sladakrobot: It's not quite the same since most of those studios were already making games exclusively for the Playstation with the exception of Bungie. They bought Nixxes for PC development and it's a good thing too because they do PC Gaming way better than Microsoft.

It seems that Microsoft bought these big companies because they suck at creating games and characters when compared to Nintendo and Sony. Sony's dirty tactics are keeping third-party games off of Xbox. Of course Microsoft burned some bridges in Japan but Sony is still clearly guilty of it.

Microsoft clearly bought them because they had to do something drastic.

@lonesamurai00: The ops post was about how Sony dont need to buy studios to make 1st party games where all their AAA games come ONLY from studios they bought! Crazy!

Crazier is, the SDF has a collective selective memory about Sonys practices and past.

Its bad when MS does it, Sony is praised when they do it.

The newly acquired Insomniac literally carries the PS5 on their back right now!

MS did had only 5 studios back then compared 13 Sony had(thx to Mattrick).
Many of them Sony bought...like ND!

I like the fake concerns Sony fanboy told us, like "we want Xbox to compete" ...the thing is, they(SDF) were sure that couldnt happen.
Now, when there is a threat, the all go in attack mode coz its not a competition they imagined...not on their rules( as there are rules?).

@sladakrobot: It has clearly gotten out of hand from both Microsoft and Sony, but too me looking from the outside, Microsoft did this to try and gain some kind of edge over the competition. They feel as though it is the only way to stabilize themselves and to catch up with the others.

Microsoft needed to do something big and this was their statement to their competitors. Sony only bought Bungie as a statement of their own. Sort of an answer to Microsoft's bigger deals of late, so the reasons were much different it seems.

Honestly though I have completely fallen out of love and respect with the Xbox division. I don't care for the direction that Microsoft has taken with regards to gaming.

I still have tremendous respect for the rest of the company as they are making the wise decisions that any company has to make to stay ahead and not become stagnant as so many others have done, but the Xbox division, as a gamer I have slowly lost all respect. I don't care for their ideas for what gaming should be at all.

As a person who plays 99 percent of his games on the PC, I always thought that having Xbox games on the PC would be great but it has been quite the opposite, and is getting worse. Playstation on the PC has been like a breath of fresh air in many ways, and It seems as though Sony is much more focused on being a gaming company, well except for shamelessly pushing their TVs on to Playstation owners, but that is mostly funny and isn't as far-reaching as what Microsoft wants to do with these huge deals and subscription based gaming services - nah nah, not for me.

Microsoft has turned into America's Tencent.

@tsunami2311: that’s a lot of hate. Seems a bit suspect. Like you might not feel the same way if another console manufacturer was buying them.

@tsunami2311: So you hate the company who bought and you hate the company who got bought...you could care less and yet you are still here?

You should focus more of your lifetime on things you like

If Microsoft can give us:

1. Starcraft III
2. Warcraft IV
3. Make a World of Warcraft II (And finally kill the OG WoW)
4. Remove more than 50% of the overly done monetization in the Activision/Blizzard IPs
5. Bring back the lost Vikings.
6. Make Call of Duty Bi-annual
7. Release Call of Duty on Nintendo systems (But not a s***y port. Have a dedicated Nintendo CoD team)
8. Make more Tony Hawk games, Spyro, and Crash games.
9. Bring Back prototype
10. And fix the OverWatch II issues. By getting more developers on the game (Especially smart ones)

I'll be the biggest X-bot on the Web. Hell, I'll tattoo the OG Xbox logo on my own back (might even make an Xbox Tramp stamp).

@illegal_peanut: UUUhhhhh, uhhhhhh, I want to join.

This is my XB wish list:

-I am down for more Spyro & Crash games, but XB needs its own mascots aLA Nintendo style. So make some Nintendo type games.

-Bring back MechAssault & new one.

-Buy out the FEAR franchise

-Buy out the Bloody Roar franchise

-Reinstate XB backwards compatiblity...it was fun seeing new BC games pop up over the months.

-Make GEARS more like Space Marine 2, and remove duck & cover and slow movement when new missions/dialog transitions.

-Perfect Dark

-More 007 games...make it happen!!!

-Talk to D3Publisher & see what's up their azz & why they no longer give us EDF games?

If nothing else I'm happy to see this whole thing come to an end. It's still a concern that MS is just gonna buy up everything at some point and mishandle all of it. But hopefully not in my lifetime lol.
