Microsoft Boss Explains Why Halo Infinite Co-Op Delay Was The Right Move

"It shows the commitment of the studio--even when it's challenging, even when it hurts--to only ship experiences when they are ready."

Halo development boss Joseph Staten has commented on the delay of Halo Infinite's campaign co-op feature, saying it was a difficult decision but ultimately the right one. Speaking to IGN, Staten said Halo and co-op are synonymous, so it was "very, very hard" to choose to delay the feature, but it was essential so the team could prioritize other areas and get the game out the door this holiday.

"I work on Halo but I'm still a Halo fan. And campaign co-op is essential to the experience. Playing Halo with your friends is playing Halo, whether it's multiplayer or campaign. So of all the decisions that we made that were the most difficult, delaying co-op was very, very hard," Staten explained. "But it shows the commitment of the studio--even when it's challenging, even when it hurts--to only ship experiences when they are ready. To only ship quality experiences. And that's so important for any franchise, but certainly a franchise like Halo that's been around for 20 years."

Now Playing: Halo Infinite Campaign Hands-On Preview

He added: "If we don't maintain that high bar, if we don't commit ourselves to excellence, and commit ourselves to every time we launch something to delighting our customers, living up to our expectations, ideally exceeding our expectations, I don't think we're doing this job right. And the simple truth was co-op just wasn't ready. And we decided to prioritize our efforts in other areas."

Those "other areas" of focus included optimizing Halo Infinite so it ran smoothly on all the devices it is launching on, including an original Xbox One model released in 2013 up to a brand-new high-end PC, Staten said.

"That was a more important goal than shipping co-op," Staten said. "That's tough. But I think if you look at those two choices and you put yourself in a customer-first mindset, it's clear which one you should choose, even though it hurts."

Microsoft had previously said that campaign co-op is expected to launch in Season 2. Due to the extension of Season 1 until May 2022, fans might have to wait a while for co-op. It's not the only feature that's been delayed, as Forge is expected to launch after Season 2, so it might be releasing even later. Developer 343 has said it will make announcements in January about Season 2, as well as its plans for campaign co-op and Forge, so we should know more relatively soon.

Staten said in another interview that campaign co-op has been playable for "some time" already, but the team still needs more time to ensure it's ready. "We don't just want to ship a campaign co-op that barely works. We want to ship a campaign co-op that's stable, that's robust, that has the features players expect," Staten said.

Halo Infinite's multiplayer beta is out now and it's being received positively by fans. The first event, Fracture: Tenrai, has begun, adding a new event pass that features new cosmetics to unlock.

The campaign launches on December 8, and it's included with Xbox Game Pass for subscribers. Check out GameSpot's recent preview in the video above.

I don't buy into this. Of course it is safe for Staten to placate everyone and say its not right to release a feature before its ready. The problem is that after delaying the game for a year, and spending time/resources spinning off multiplayer into a free to play cash grab, that the co-op feature is not ready. It should have been ready, Staten/343 delivered microtransactions instead of co-op.

I rather a delay for the whole product and then release it as a whole and not in bits or pieces. I just hope all the hype lives up to what they saying because others Devs were hyping theirs and it sort of fizzled.

It hurts but the saying "something delayed can eventually result in a better product" should apply also to a MS owned developer.
Its frequently used by fans of other plattforms to justify a delay on their preffered plattform.
So,it should be only fair to show the same reaction here aswell.

While we all wanted a co-op multiplayer on day one,we all (at least all those who want Halo to be good) dont want halo Infinte to launch in a rocky state.
I for one, will wait until the co-op multiplayer drops and will buy the game then.
If the co-op is flawless, this story will be forgotten within few weeks.

Why would it be ready? It's only been 6 years. Game is a joke.

@Packer1080: Just something to think about:

The development on The Last of Us 2 started 2014.

The Last of Us 2 launched in July 2020(6 yrs later)

The promised multiplayer is still not available...the last time heard, its aimed for 2022(2 yrs later)

343i within those 6 yrs you mentioned ,developed a brandnew game engine and the game itself and wants to deliver missing features 3 months after the launch.

If the ysay coop is so important to the game; I quote " And campaign co-op is essential to the experience. Playing Halo with your friends isplaying Halo, whether it's multiplayer or campaign."

Then the game is not ready to be shipped, the experience is not ready. So why plan the release of the game for the incomplete experience when it's important for you it's complete?

@Slash_out: The obvious reason is money.
If you miss that specific period window in the year where most gamers (and also parents) are likely to open their wallets, you miss alot of money.
You see these broken and buggy releases(COD,Battlefield,Cyberpunk last year) every time.

I speak for myself now,i am glad that Halo in that regard isnt buggy, broken or unplayable

Pretty weird though, and doesn't explain anything.
Multiplayer networking 24 people together (Big Team Battle) clearly works.
The campaign itself is ready.

What is the actual problem?

@skyhighgam3r: Multiplayer and campaign are two different kettles of fish when it comes to netcode. I don't know exactly what Infinite's campaign is like, but I'm betting it's more than just "load into map, keep player/enemy positions synced, load out of map" - there's probably all sorts of cutscenes, directed sequences, streaming over larger levels (I understand this is Halo's most open-world campaign yet), and much more complicated AI to synchronise than the bots in multiplayer.

For you it might have been a right move

But for us gamers it was a wrong move

Co-op was a core thing since Halo CE all the way to 4

You took Co-op from Halo 5 why?? To anger you player base and make more money??

Games should be finished and not released at a 60 price tag and an early access phase

@at0m1x: Yes Co-Op was in at launch.
Never needed any update what-so-ever.
I don't need to look it up. I was there.
I spent 300$ on a 2nd Xbox so we could play it.
It was there, at launch, full stop.
