Microsoft files to recover Xbox One domain

Microsoft seeks to reclaim XboxOne.com and XboxOne.net domains from a UK resident.

Microsoft has started the process to recover the XboxOne.com and XboxOne.net domains, according to a report by Fusible.

No Caption Provided

The Redmond, Washington, software giant has filed a claim with the National Arbitration Forum, a body that functions similarly to a court, to settle the domain ownership dispute. The claim is being made against a London resident who has owned both the XboxOne.com and XboxOne.net domains since December 2011. Leases on the domains are not due to expire until late 2016.

Proceedings on the case, number 1501205, were commenced on May 23 this year and are currently listed as pending.

Microsoft may have elected to hold off on the motion for the websites prior to announcing its upcoming console’s final name in order to avoid tipping the public off ahead of the device’s unveiling last week.

@chad28_69 Microsoft doesn't buy things lol they force your company into bankruptcy but flooding your market at a lower price then you can. Then buy your company(or IP's) from the bank auction afterwards thus giving them control of your assets and market.

Also they are jerks lol.

The Xbox One is an Apple-esque crazy and confusing Ministry of Truth history rewriting attempt renaming scheme (new new iPad anyone - and btw, I love both their products and Android) that MS should have known better than to stick with. At the very least the rumoured Xbox Infinity domain name would have been easier to obtain. I'm surprised MS did not park this domain since the days of the real Xbox 1!

what i dont get is if this guy thought ahead enough to take this website in the beginning, why didnt he think about it enough to put together a simple fan site with enough info on it to look like hes not ''squatting'' ? then wouldent he have more rights to the domain?

By settling this they probably mean that they are going thru legal channels to purchase the domain from London resident. At least that's my assumption.

BLURAY IS NOW REGION LOCKED ON XBOX ONE....Well, what else can we expect from the company that is pushing the cloud through your nose. The sad thing is when people think BluRay we think Region Free....but noooo that would be to good to be true with Xbox One. so let's recount the positives and the negatives shall we?:

Pos:

- A semi improved 360 controller.

- A flashy gesture and voice recognition system

Neg:

- A "24 hour internet check" for gaming functionality regarless of multiplayer or NOT.

- Your downloaded games and DLC that you purchased over the years WON'T Play.

- Your Profile would have to be shared if you want to let a friend or family member use your Hard Copy and Downloaded games by doing so the certainty of them ruining your gamer score and gaming library recorded on your profile.

- Your Favorite headset won't work...Microsoft wants you to buy a new one!

- Kinnect is now forced on you on every xbox and you can't deactivate it.

- No way to fully shut off that xbox, unless completely unplugged.

- The Xbox brand represented a Gaming console with multimedia choices, NOW is a Multimedia Box with restricted gaming functionality.

- Indie Developers no longer have the freedom they used to have.

- The box looks like it came through a Time Machine from the 80's and Microsoft wants us to put that in our Living Rooms???

- Microsoft still have the technologically inferior box compared to SONY...might not seem like by much, but faster Memory and Processor equals better games.

- Microsoft putting up restrictions on how you buy and trade your used games...what it used to be a hassle-free process and decision, now it's a nightmare.

- And now for the first time ever, BLURAY IS NOW REGION LOCKED thanks to Microsofts paranoia....so much for the possibility of buying those games that might not make it in your country like we did with the PS3 and most xbox 360 games.

I'm pretty sure the negatives outweigh any positives listed here or the ones you would like to think of....

the choice is clear and your hard earned money will send a message to Microsoft to either support them on a half-ass gaming effort full with restrictions and hassles or if you would want them to know you deserved better as a gamer.

>>>Let me dissect your post please, if I may…..

“BLURAY IS NOW REGION LOCKED ON XBOX ONE....Well, what else can we expect from the company that is pushing the cloud through your nose. The sad thing is when people think BluRay we think Region Free....but noooo that would be to good to be true with Xbox One. so let's recount the positives and the negatives shall we?:”

>>> There is no such thing as Region Free Blu-Ray…see here: http://www.blurayregioncodes.com/

Pos:

>>> That’s “Pros”

- A semi improved 360 controller.

>>> It’s hard to improve on what most gamers consider to be the best controller ever made.

- A flashy gesture and voice recognition system

>>> Kinect tech has me blown away. To call it simply a flashy gesture and voice recognition system, belies the amazing tech that’s gone into it.

Neg:

- A "24 hour internet check" for gaming functionality regarless of multiplayer or NOT.

>>> Doesn’t mean anything to me, but this is your one valid point for those unfortunate to have no internet or when the internet goes down. However, it doesn’t have to check every day (like if you’re away on holiday) it’s only when the system is being used that the 24 hour period check happens.

- Your downloaded games and DLC that you purchased over the years WON'T Play.

>>> Yes they will! On your Xbox 360! This is a NEW system…Get used to it!

- Your Profile would have to be shared if you want to let a friend or family member use your Hard Copy and Downloaded games by doing so the certainty of them ruining your gamer score and gaming library recorded on your profile.

>>> Ruining your gamerscore? What, by not getting achievements? Can’t you get them yourself? Ruining your library? Wtf?

- Your Favorite headset won't work...Microsoft wants you to buy a new one!

>>> the console has a built in Optical port for sound only. Don’t dismiss the possibility of Microsoft or a third party creating an adapter for the new pad’s headset port.

- Kinnect is now forced on you on every xbox and you can't deactivate it.

>>> Wow, a free kinect sensor…sweet! Oh, a well placed tea-cosy can pretty much render the kinect camera blind btw ;)

- No way to fully shut off that xbox, unless completely unplugged.

>>> yes there is. Been confirmed already.

- The Xbox brand represented a Gaming console with multimedia choices, NOW is a Multimedia Box with restricted gaming functionality.

>>> Nope, I think I will let E3 speak for itself. Microsoft have already stated they unveil was always meant to be a broader vision for the future. If you think Xbox One isn’t a gaming machine, just watch E3…then kindly eat your words.

- Indie Developers no longer have the freedom they used to have.

>>> Also confirmed that Microsoft will fully support the indie community.

- The box looks like it came through a Time Machine from the 80's and Microsoft wants us to put that in our Living Rooms???

>>> I like it. However, this is a personal taste thing.

- Microsoft still have the technologically inferior box compared to SONY...might not seem like by much, but faster Memory and Processor equals better games.

>>> Comparing Ram memory by type has no bearing on performance, unless you also consider bus speed. Google it! Also, a custom designed CPU that Microsoft has paid 3 Billion $'s to AMD for. Don't discount this chips unique performance.

- Microsoft putting up restrictions on how you buy and trade your used games...what it used to be a hassle-free process and decision, now it's a nightmare.

>>> A nightmare? It’s not even out yet. Yes, shame on Microsoft for trying to make sure developers get some money for used game sales and supporting the industry.

- And now for the first time ever, BLURAY IS NOW REGION LOCKED thanks to Microsofts paranoia....so much for the possibility of buying those games that might not make it in your country like we did with the PS3 and most xbox 360 games.

>>> As stated previously….There is no such thing as Region Free Blu-Ray…see here: http://www.blurayregioncodes.com/

>>> To be honest, I really can’t see Microsoft messing up here. Everywhere I go I see people pre-ordering the Xbox One. It’s breaking pre-order records at several different stores here in the UK. Of course there are always sony fanboys and naysayers trying to cast doubt and spouting off horsesh*t that simple isn’t true. Personally I can’t wait for Xbox One. Roll on E3 :)

What are you talking about, almost any Blu-Ray player can be made to be Region Free if you know the correct code sequence. I have a Region-Free Blu Ray player as most people do. In fact you can buy them straight off Amazon that way if you choose.

Look, I understand why many of you hate "domain squatters", but why waste your time? They bought it, they own it, and if someone else wants to buy it, they should pay.

@forbiddenmow To your first comment; I totally agree that it's like buying property. In some ways, a LOT like owning property. He has the right to own it, and when someone wants to buy, sell. The problem comes in when he wants you to buy it for a million dollars, after he paid less than $100. That's when MS turns into the government, and finds ways to take it back for less than the price you paid (check out stories of the government paying less than market value when they want to bLook, I understand why many of you hate "domain squatters", but why waste your time? They bought it, they own it, and if someone else wants to buy it, they should pay. uild a road and the owner doesn't want to sell).

Secondly, in many states you can still collect welfare even after winning the powerball, or changing your name to "Ol' Dirty Bastard". Perfectly legal doesn't always make perfect sense.

"Look, I understand why many of you hate "domain squatters", but why waste your time? They bought it, they own it, and if someone else wants to buy it, they should pay."

somewhere along the lines, the original message was lost. I always said he should get paid.....

well. let's agree to disagree. domains can be acquired on the market. like property. it's a cornerstone of western civilisation that people are free to buy things that are on sale, enjoy the private ownership of that property, and speculate on the market. this is just business. there's nothing stopping square enix from buying your example domains if they want. arguably they're dumb if they don't - from a business perspective. squatters simply violate private property rights. they stick two fingers up at one of the fundamental principles of the west. really, they are poles apart and should in no way be compared; either morally or economically.

@forbiddenmow I was being serious. Property squatters are, like you said, generally scum.

Domain squatters are usually dreamers hoping that out of the 20 or so sites they register, one will eventually pay off. I like to think of them more as idiots that still like to remember stories from the late 90's when companies used to go out of their way to pay for those domain names. While it may be legal, and they should be compensated, they should also have to face the fact that they only did it to try and make money.

I'm not talking about the people that have their own site that they actually maintain, and then a company comes along and says, "hey, that domain name might confuse people with a new product we're releasing with a similar name". I'm talking about the people that (hypothetically) register names like "FF16/FFXVI.com or .net, knowing that there is more than likely a Square Enix game being made that will eventually make that domain name valuable. Those people know exactly what they're doing, and it's just as bad as living in a house you don't own or pay rent for, and then getting mad when the real owners show up.

squatters are generally scum. abhorrent and universally hated because what they do is wrong on many levels. calling people who speculatively accumulate property perfectively legally "squatters" just to tarnish them is well wide of the mark. i really can't see the similarity at all and i think the term is unfair. i know you didn't invent the term, and many others use it. i was simply asking a question.

I'm not a fan of Domain squatters at all... however, if i buy a piece of land and choose not to develop it, then Asda (or Wallmart for you guys in the USA) come along and say they want to build a supermarket there and they are taking the land off me with no payment or compensation... well, i'm just saying!

@McTabish Exactly they are called land squatters. Just like people who buy the land up around airports knowing that they will expand, just a matter of time! I have no problem with them at all. Playstation uses playstation.com and thats it, end game, good luck squatting on any future consoles on them.

@TheWalkingGhost it doesn't matter what he's doing with it. It's his. Or is it ok if I demand you to give me your car because you are not using it? domains are bought and sold, and he bought it before MS even registred the new name for their console.

A few years ago microsoft sued a teenager for the website "mikerowesoft.com" because it was too close to Microsoft.com. Turns out the teenagers name was Mike Rowe and MS still won. Having similar names are apparently reason enough in the US courts to steal domain names. In the end uproar cause MS to return the site to the teen and he got a free 360 too... OooOoOo.

Well, Microsoft has "XBox" trademarked. Unless this guy was using the site for his business X Boxes for One or something similar, where there is just a coincidental relation because of the lack of spaces, MS has a pretty good case.

It seems like he/she is just sitting on them. I'm guessing there might be a "little" cash go his way (good faith "hey we have to take these but you had 'em first"), but it doesn't look like MS is going to have too much trouble getting those. In fact, since they aren't used they could probably just make him relinquish his ownership straight up.

He really can't own the Domain, once Microsoft puts the court action in place, the guy will have to relinquish the domain, because he owns no part of Microsoft. He's actually using their trademark in the name "Xbox"...
