Microsoft's IllumiRoom could sit on coffee tables and interact with the Xbox 720, a new report claims.

No Caption Provided

The proof-of-concept IllumiRoom device would work with Kinect to gather information about a gamer's living room, and then project lights around their television set to extend the image displayed on the screen in real-time.

Microsoft looks likely to reveal more about the device at the CHI 2013 event in Paris, France tomorrow.

A video released by Microsoft says that self-calibrating IllumiRoom can "change the appearance of the room" to "distort reality, extend field of view, and enable entirely new gaming experiences."

"IllumiRoom envisions a next-generation gaming console with a projector that sits on your coffee table and surrounds your television with projected light," says one IllumiRoom video obtained by The Verge.

By using what the video calls radial wobble, for instance, the IllumiRoom can appear to make the living room shake to gunshot fire. "By distorting and reprojecting the room texture," says the video "it is possible to warp reality and make it appear that the room itself is responding to the game."

Other effects shown include falling snowflakes that can bounce off furniture or speed up depending on the actions taking place in-game.

The device is even shown working with Gearbox's Borderlands and Valve's mind-bending puzzler Portal.

Microsoft has released research notes and a five minute video showing the device in action:

Microsoft will reveal its next-generation console on May 21.

I'm sorry but I don't think that is very cool at all, just look at how bad the projections look! It might be cool with some third-person games, but I feel like it's weird when its first person because its not like extended peripherals its like seeing everywhere . . .

This looks amazing and I can't wait to get it (that is if the price is right). Hopefully the new kinect will be what most of us expected it to be originally (and more) and that this with it will be as good as it looks.

This is a cute littel device that open some posible new features, but if teh price poit is to high than this will fail. I would get this only if it was under 75 dollars, and only because it would give me an advantage at FPS.

Take my car, take my home (well for the size of the room I will need another home).

Ps: Maybe they will make a way to install the projector in the wall instead the coffe table, helping people with too much space.

This looks pretty neat. For me I can't see it really working, I'm the type of guy who pulls chair in front of the entertainment center and kicks back to play games, I can't even grasp how someone can play a game 10 feet away on a couch to a 40" television (concept video). Besides, I won't pay an extra $250 - $350 on top of a $400 - $500 console just for a blurry outer image around my TV, no doubt it'll help with immersion, but it's not practical to me.

I think its awesome. It would definitely augment my game experience for the better. Can imagine a noir-style level, the rain illusion dripping in the room etc. Not that it will necessarily move games forward, but definitely an enjoyable feature. Of course, I stopped playing xbox in the living room years ago, I just sit at my desk and play it through my PC monitor. Not sure if I could go back to sitting so far away from the screen..

@CarlosZombie Such a dumb comment on so many levels. If you think its dumb that's fine, but having a bigger TV doesn't negate the effects of illumi room. Find a better excuse. I think you could if you tried.

@mingolo Oculus Rift is a bit of a gimmick too, just more advanced. Both simply immerse you deeper into your game. However this one doesn't require you to mount something on your face.

Nintendo is bound to be jealous of this, come to think of it. Cause this is the type of thing that could have given the Wii U that extra edge..

@mariokart64fan Projectors don't usually project at that wide of an angle, so I'd assume it's a microsoft piece of hardware. Question is will it cost a lot, or way too much.

@ShimmeringSword @mariokart64fan Both, just look at the Kinect, poor functionality at three times its production cost.

Ms is going to over take Nintendo on producing useless gimmicks that do not push gaming forward. This better stay concept.

If they want to do something that actually moves things forward in the world of gaming support the Oculus Rift instead of waiting 5 years when VR is well established, then jumping into the market and failing hilariously.

Honestly. MS is just brutal at pretty much everything lately. They literally have commercials for their browser and search engine..seriously? I thought a browser and a search engine was the best form of advertising on?

@WingChopMasta except nintendos gimmicks arent useless , they paved the way for mostly anything , first was analog and 4 controller ports out of the box next was gba connectivity then was wii motion controls and when their done right they work rather well , unlike microsofts offerings which require a big amount of space and the games just dont look fun to play l ol

@mariokart64fan @WingChopMasta Nintendo has done nothing in well over a decade to move gaming forward. Nintendo's 'motion' controller was one of the worst iteration of any motion device ever created for gaming. THEN when they finally but not really did it better, they charged more for the adapter.

You can add the Wiimote next to the power glove for motion control innovation for Nintendo.

Nintendo and innovation should never be in the same sentence..not for the longest time now.

@SSL_Syn @WingChopMasta The Wii was not dirt cheap compared to a PS3 with Move. Not only did you get better media usage with the PS3, and next gen graphics, but you bought the Move set and it worked out of the box. The Wii was geared towards 2 player stuff, so you really HAD to buy 2 remotes (plus the separate game pad which many games needed or were better with), and the Wii only came with 1 remote with no battery pack (the PS3 controllers all have rechargeable built in. if you bought the nunchuck, recharger, and motion Plus for each controller, and the seperate regular controller - it was waaaay more expensive and no where near as good as the Move or PS3. i didn't like the Move either, but saying the Wii was "an affordable motion gaming console" is silly, they could have made it much cheaper and/or better. Don't by the Move either, it was a waste as well! And kinect was maybe the lamest of the 3! (As you can see i am not into motion gaming).

@WingChopMasta @mariokart64fan Also on the topic of Nintendo not innovating in over a decade, or any console really for that matter. We live in a world where innovation is happening daily, back in the day console creators could easily shock consumers, your average parent wasn't following the latest news of analog stick technology, or disc based gaming. Today anyone with a computer can stumble onto amazing pieces of technology like the Oculus Rift while hardly knowing what an gaming console is. That's why barely any of the big three have done anything mind blowing in the past decade, it's not the console creators fault, it's the world we live in. We're innovating so fast that anything these companies will do in the future will seem almost a no brainer.

@WingChopMasta Now you're just being ridiculous. The Wiimote wasn't supposed to be a technical marvel, it was marketed as an affordable motion gaming console, and guess what, it was. The technology used in the controller was inexpensive and effective when the user setup their console properly. Two minutes of calibrating and it was flawless.

Motion plus only adds to it, and was dirt cheap when compared to Sony's Move costing just over a $100, and Microsoft Kinect being $170.
