Microsoft Is Removing Xbox One Snap Mode And Here's Why

Microsoft is removing the feature in part to "free up resources going forward for bigger things."

As suspected, the newest Xbox One update removes the console's multitasking feature, Snap. This was discovered on Monday when the update started to roll out and has now been confirmed by Xbox engineering lead Mike Ybarra.

Writing on Twitter, Ybarra explained that Snap was removed in an effort to "improve multitasking, reduce memory use, improve overall speed, and free up resources going forward for bigger things."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Microsoft Is Removing Xbox One Snap Mode And Here's Why

Microsoft's decision to back away from Snap is not a total surprise, as a November 2016 report said the company was looking to kill the feature. Snap-style functionality hasn't been removed entirely, though, as you can enable a new Achievement overlay that lets you track your progress.

The update that removes Snap is currently available for some Xbox Insiders and will go live for everyone in the spring. The overall goal for the update is to simplify the UI and improve overall performance, according to Microsoft. The company acknowledges that "the UI can be complex, and for certain tasks, can require too many button presses."

New accessibility options are also being introduced; most notably, the co-pilot feature that allows two separate controllers to be simultaneously as one. Read GameSpot's previous coverage to see a full rundown of what's included with the update or check out the video above to see it in action.

The Xbox One was the best-selling console over the second half of 2016 in the US, though the rival PS4 outsold it during December.

The things gained by removing snap in my opinion was not worth it, I loved the ability to snap youtube or other apps aside my games and now they just decide to throw it out to "improve" minor UI? Wow.. Well I suppose I can always set up my computer monitor beside my TV to create the same experience.

I'm primarily a PS4 gamer and when i bought a One S the most jarring thing was going from the simplicity of the PS4 UI to the cluttered mess and unintuitiveness of the One S UI. Whatever they can do to make it better is greatly appreciated.

I actually like the new UI. Its definetly faster and it feels less cluttered on the home screen. Snap was never my favorite feature so I really won't miss it.

@Ripper_TV: This is what annoys me quite a bit about modern consoles. With PS1 or PS2 sure the "dash" was almost nonexistent but at least I got to keep what I had. On X360 I liked the blades, but then one day they were just gone for reasons. The following updates got little better, and little worse, and so on. Even if you see an annoying update on the way there's not a lot you can do.

Someone somewhere compared it to what if BestBuy came and changed my refridgerators and cars and so "for my best"... though that is happening already. Soon fridges can glitch out with a note "We apologize for the inconvenience"

I haven't played my xbox one that much, and at first I didn't have an issue with all the different features but I think they made it more complicated and sometimes buggy as time went on. Don't care about the removal at all.

We're going to improve multitasking by... removing multitasking.

@Byshop: Oh, snap!

Looks like some of the functionality (game DVR, achievement tracker, music) is moving into the guide overlay (slides in from the left, taking over single tap of Home button from...the Home Screen). Could be more efficient that way.

Kinda stinks but I wasn't a big fan of the feature. Wish they would have allowed the option to resize the snapped app. I thought it was going to be great to play a game while having something play on the side (movie, tv show, sports game, etc) but the screen size or the snapped video was just too small that it wasn't even worth it.

So they add this crap and then they remove it again? Could Sony do the same now with its sharing feature to free up some resources for actually useful things? It's about time.

I love my ps4 but I agree with this. The ps4 pro simply isn't much of an upgrade. I'm really looking forward to Scorpio instead because it's a very big difference.

@Iemander: its not really a big difference its just a beefier xbox one as it will play the exact same game as your x1

just like the pro plays a beefier version of its games

@Iemander: Scorpio is exactly the same thing as PS4 Pro, only better specs. If you didn't consider the PS4 GPU doubling in power with the PS4 Pro as "much of an upgrade", you probably won't consider the GPU boost from Scorpio as much of an upgrade either.

@livedreamplay: PS4 Pro is a compromise machine. It tries to do things like 4k and 60FPS but it's simply not good enough so it hangs somewhere in the middle. I can never play my games very comfortable. Case in point The Last Guardian (Seriously bad FPS in 4k) and Uncharted 4 (Barely an enhancement at all).

Scorpio should be powerfull enough that it doesn't feel like a compromise machine.

And also, Scorpio really needs the power, because backwards compatibility is absolutely awesome and I can't wait for them to up the resolution on that as well and have games perform even better than the original. Again I enjoy my PS Now for some good RPGs (Everything more latency sensitive just sucks on it)... but again it's a compromise with latency. And there's no advantage in performance compared to the PS3, which BC potentially does have.

Eurogamer has many good articles going through the technical details.

@Iemander: What makes the SCORPIO a very big difference? If you believe that then you are going to be very disappointed. Expect much of the same as PRO. Same games with higher resolution and some games WILL be upscaled. While the PS4 and X1 are still relevant then the PRO and SCORPIO will be held back.

@shortmaneighty2: Yeah, it'll likely be the same difference you can see for games like DA:I and MGS5 there were released for last and current gen. On a 720p screen there's hardly a difference at all to be made out and it'll probably be about the same with the Scorpio on 1080p, even if they're gonna add a few effects for those who stick to that resolution. The upgraded consoles are only meant to let you play games in 4K, that's all.

The Xbox One was the best-selling console during the quiet season in the US, but got totally destroyed in global sales and holiday sales, which is the only metrics that matter.

There PS4 is closing in 3x larger userbase...

@bensonmutton: HONESTLY MS should not concern themselves with the premium market. they should keep a basic (competitive) console experience alive and running well enough for console users. then their efforts can be focussed on bringing the full xbox experience to any windows 10 pc. full on play anywhere that includes third party titles and no stupid WUP requirement.

Heavily promoted, but really, when gamers want to play a game, they are so absorbed that all this extra shit becomes useless. Take it all away and give us better performance.

Cannot wait for scorpio and futures games that take advantage of it.

Hello,

Maybe you can help me out here?. Im not sure if there is another way, but to capture a video, not by saying "hey Cortana record that " and capture last 30 secs, but for example in Overwatch the highlights section contains your play of the games for the session, and sometimes I used to go there, open media recorder in snap mode, play the highlighted "play of the game" and start recording.

If Snap mode is going away, how can I record those videos?

Thx

G

Snap was one of those feature that sounded cool when it was first announced but it never really worked out in any meaningful way. I'm ok with it going away.

Fanboys at launch, "Snap is so awesome, i use it all the time!!!"

Fanboys after they ditch it, "yeah, I never used it except for maybe a few times, no big loss."

Sounds just like when they announce a game and then cancel it.

@khanwashere:

I was pumped for snap when it was announce. I used it almost daily to watch sporting events while gaming. It did make the UI painfully slow at times, which was bearable as long as you were staying in the game/app and not moving around too much.

I will miss it, but in reality, it needed to go to speed up the system.

@imajinn: It will help if they start using a faster HDD, the one they using right now is just too slow at 5200. They should at least use the faster 7200rpm, the 7200 is just faster. The hybrid HDD for the elite console is 20 percent faster than the 5200 that they are using right now for every Xbox one except the Elite version.

@angrycreep: I doubt the 7200rpm drive will make that big of a dent in load times as they already do a decent job of preloading content for most things beyond huge area changes.

A hybrid hdd/ssd like a toshiba - would be perfect mix of large capacity, speed and cost. I swap out my xbox drive for a SSD as soon as i got it a couple years ago. As I am not a hoarder, an usually only play 5-10 games at a time, this was no problem.

Now you can use a external SSD and still get amazing performance leap for the cost of a game or you can add an internal one (which will probably void your warranty) and do even better.

@jenovaschilld: One of the things that really had me mad was the no option of swapping HDD's I have never been a fan of external HDD and they don't let you buy a bigger HHD and swap the HHD that you have and instead you a re force to buy an external one or just buy a new console with a bigger one. They should use a hybrid one for every Xbox or at least the Scorpio.

@angrycreep: I was also bummed about the non removable drive. I bought a decent 2 TB external though and it's been awesome, I don't think I'd have it any other way now! All i have to do when going to a friends house is grab a controller and the drive and I have every game in my catalogue (currently around 140). I used to only buy physical, but man digital is just too convenient I wont ever go back. When I see a game on sale that I have as a physical copy, I'll buy it if it's a good deal just so I don't have to worry about discs anymore!
