Microsoft Is Reportedly Planning An Xbox Event For March 26, But Don't Get Too Excited Yet

A "what's new for gaming" show is supposedly happening on March 26.

The Microsoft-Bethesda event might not be the only Xbox show for March. Windows Central reported that Microsoft is planning some kind of "gaming show" for March 26. The site's sources said this event may provide a "glimpse at some upcoming Xbox games for 2021, and possibly beyond."

Before you get too excited, however, bear in mind that official details are unavailable at this stage. Windows Central said it's possible this will be more of a "tech and platform-oriented event with some smaller game announcements." Alternatively, it could be "something more."

This report came after insider Paul Thurrott tweeted that a "what's new for gaming" event from Microsoft is slated for March 23. Windows Central said it understands this event may actually take place on March 26. Whatever the case, those dates are rapidly approaching, so we should know more soon, if the show is indeed real.

With Microsoft's recent $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax now officially completed, Microsoft certainly has a lot more to talk about, but it's too soon to say what might be featured in this show.

Outside of this one, Microsoft also recently confirmed that there will be more news to share from Microsoft and Bethesda sometime this summer, likely outside of E3.

The roundtable interview between Microsoft and Bethesda also offered some new insight on future games from Bethesda. Xbox boss Phil Spencer said games will release on any platform that has Xbox Game Pass, which cuts out PlayStation and other competing consoles, though arrangements that are already in place will remain intact, so Deathloop will still be a timed-exclusive on PS5.

We also learned that a whopping 20 back-catalog Bethesda games are headed to Game Pass on March 12, including Skyrim and many others.

A lot of rumors on announced 2021 games. Hoping this event is where they are announced. Still haven't heard anything on Crossfire X, The Ascent, Bright Memory Infinite, and Scorn yet either.

They will tell about all the new Series X games that we can't play because we still can't get ahold of the freaking console!

With the news of Sony losing Bethesda as a partner for all future games, let's remember all the properties Sony have lost their exclusivity on over the years....

Tomb Raider

Tekken

Resident Evil

Silent Hill

Final Fantasy

Ace Combat

Kingdom Hearts

Metal Gear

Yakuza

Does anybody else have anyother properties I couldn't think of right away???

@sealionact: Let's give Sony a bit of a break and not count HZD neither any other title that went PC on them as technically they still console exclusive...BUT MLB Baseball certainly another loss for Sony.

@johnny0779: Exclusivity is largely unmaintainable and undesirable for a third-party dev. Sony and Microsoft (and Nintendo) have hardware ecosystems they are trying to draw people into, so building/buying studios and making exclusive deals behooves them in many cases.

Also remember how many of those old Sony deals are due to being the only viable game in town for such titles (at the time), along with national relationships in Japan, and having more capital than a company such as SEGA.

@theduckofdeath: ...."remember how many of those old Sony deals are due to being the only viable game in town for such titles (at the time)"

That's where you are wrong the Sega Saturn and Nintendo 64 which were more powerful than the PS1 didn't have Tomb Raider, nor Tekken among other exclusive 3rd party games and when the PS2 came out

the original Xbox once again was available and didn't have Yakuza, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy and many more.....

The fact is that Sony had so much but didn't know how to maintain them....so NO it was about because it was "the only console if its type"

@johnny0779:

I said it was the only viable option.

SEGA Saturn was expensive, and launched out of nowhere with little support. My brother is the only person I know who bought one. He was a SEGA diehard who had Master System and Genesis as a kid, and bought 32X, SEGA CD, Saturn, and finally, Dreamcast. That is a narrow market. He was trying to get me to play Fighter's MegaMix as recently as October.

N64 was so late that I got tired of waiting and bought a Playstation in summer '96. Cartridges were expensive, trading great load times for limited memory. There were things that could not be done on N64 and others that Nintendo would not allow. I never bought an N64. My brother had one at home, and a roommate had one in college when we wanted to play GoldenEye, Revenge, No Mercy. Besides, Robotech: Crystal Dreams got cancelled, so why bother? 😉

So again, for the wider demographic that would actually buy a lot of games, males in their teens through late 30's, SONY PS was the best option. PS was also the best platform to target for many developers. Neither Saturn nor N64 had the momentum, vision, or mix of architecture to get the new genre-defining or eye-catching games.

@johnny0779: all of the good ones from that list are still on PS, who cares if they are exclusive or not, and by the way, to me personally none of bethesda's games appeal at all, I hate the look and feel of their shitty games, couldnt stand fallout 4, and dishonored isnt a big loss, and skyrim my have been big at the time but games like witcher 3 outdid it with better combat and exploration, so basically bethesda games is offering little to nothing to its fans and is a shadow of its former self, i do enjoy me some doom though but still, it isnt something that is must play for me, and by the sales of the sequel, it seems others agree.

@notjm: Nothing, but if you're asking who cares whether a game is exclusive, I'm here to tell you; fanboys care about what's exclusive an whole lot. Hence the unsolicited list of games no longer Sony exclusive in the OP's original post on an article about Xbox.

@mogan: Other than maybe Yakuza, sony fans dont care about the loss of the other franchises, lets face it, metal gear went down hill with kojima, and then we got death stranding which was more an 'art' game, which I did not enjoy at all, but the fact Sony has God of war and Spiderman, horizon, ratchet and clank, days gone and ghosts of tsushima should shut xbox fan boys up for ever, having nothing even out now for their new console.

@notjm: That's the thing with the Series X, there probably isn't ever going to be anything major exclusive to it. Microsoft will put all there games out on PC as well, and if they get their streaming service going well enough, the reasons for folks to buy an actual Xbox will become fairly limited, even if the Xbox as a brand ends up being way more successful than the PlayStation.

I'm a sony fanboy and I'm afraid to admit PlayStation lost entire generations of gaming exclusivity to Xbox.

I have a feeling we are not going to be seeing many big name announcements; at least about games that will be shipping this year.

This is mostly thanks to the pandemic as it seems to have stalled much in the way of many developers' game development. I mean, c'mon. How many titles have we already seen been delayed over the last 6 months?

Still, there might be a chance that we get news of projects developers will be working on even if they are in the extremely early stages of development. I imagine we will be seeing a lot of 10 second cinematic teaser trailers or the like.

With that said, I'm glad we are getting anything.

Would love it to turn out to be a detailed driver & API deep-dive review once (like the wrong meeting link gets posted), so the millions of gamers get the tiniest glimpse into "it's not as easy as it looks."
