Microsoft Is Trying To Ramp Up Xbox Series X/S Production, Phil Spencer Says

The head of Xbox said he recently spoke with AMD about how to improve Xbox Series X|S production.

The Xbox Series X and Series S systems have been extremely difficult to find since they launched in November, and stock hasn’t improved much at the major retailers. However, head of Xbox Phil Spencer said he's taken some steps to ensure the console will be more plentiful soon. It's unclear how soon "soon" is, but the issues affecting Microsoft are likely similar to the ones affecting Sony.

Talking to Xbox Live's "Major Nelson" Larry Hryb on his podcast (via VGC), Spencer explained that Microsoft has been making new consoles as quickly as possible, but he's also working with their production partners to further increase output. This includes AMD, which creates the system's GPU and CPU. The Switch is the only major system to not use AMD for these components, relying instead on Nvidia.

"It really is just down to physics and engineering. We're not holding them back," Spencer said. "We're building them as fast as we can. We have all the assembly lines going. I was on the phone last week with Lisa Su at AMD [asking], 'How do we get more? How do we get more?' So it's something that we're constantly working on, but it's not just us. I think gaming has really come into its own in 2020."

We've seen sporadic restocks of the Xbox Series X and Series S at places like Walmart and Best Buy since their initial release, and these will hopefully become more frequent as Microsoft is able to speed up production. Sony is having extremely high demand for the PS5, as well, and it also makes use of an AMD Radeon RDNA 2 style GPU. Because of this, bottlenecks for one company likely affect the other. The pandemic surely hasn't helped matters, but we should hopefully see more stock early this year as the early adopters no longer rush to secure their system.

For help tracking down an Xbox Series X|S, check out our restock guide. It has updates from every major retailer so you can have the best shot of ordering a system soon.

"Arbitration would require each dispute handled individually by an arbitrator, whereas a class-action suit combines several users' claims together into a single legal proceeding" Microsoft will always be Microsoft and Phil Spencer was promoted as head of Xbox to ACT the part of a good guy and try to shake the negative image people had of Xbox

Nice try Phil.

Microsoft is either breaking even or losing a bit of money on every gen 9 console built (just like the other company is likely breaking even or losing money on their box too). Phil and the c-suite are in no rush to build more boxes, partly to save money and partly to artificially goose demand by constricting supply.

Please sell crazy somewhere else, we’re all stocked up here.

Looks like MS has finally figured out the only way how they could get ahead in this new gen: by providing more consoles than Sony can. Too bad that plan has already been foiled by them using the same graphics chip as Sony's console. I doubt AMD is willing to wreck its relationship with Sony by prioritizing MS.

It's been an effortless step upgrade thus far. Wasn't crazy about the lack of optical out at first, but after digging into the fact that newer audio formats are only supported over newer HDMI and DisplayPort, it makes sense.

@Pyrosa: I was confused about the optical cord support as well. Then when I got my Series X, I just plugged the end of the optical into my TV, ( that usually would have plugged into the Series X ) and it was the same.

@sebb: I'd say it's rather the fault of the companies who chose to both work with the same graphics chip manufacturer. Nvidia making the chip for the Switch probably wouldn't have been a big deal. But AMD providing it for both of the top consoles on the market? I don't even know how they managed to not have everything about the chips' designs get out when it's the same company working on different chips for 2 competitors at the same time.

But either way, even if AMD could provide as many chips as they want, Sony and MS would still be unable to keep up production. Ramping up productio takes time and while they could surely make the investments to be able to produce dozens of millions of units per year right now, they probably won't as that would cost them a lot of money and they'd have no use for those factories once the market is somehwat satiated. Having partnering factories that can switch their production to all kinds of different products in a relatively short amount of time would be a big advantage though.

@Atzenkiller: I see. So it would the same situation with those new graphics cards that are out of stock? I'm playing Cyberpunk on a gtx 1070 at 900p, 30 fps. Can't find one one of those new cards to get a higher framerate and res. Given that the majority of gamers can't get next gen hardware, I would say next gen has not arrived yet. Selling PS5s and Series Xs to a few people and then going out of stock does not constitute a launch in my opinion. More like market sampling.

@sebb: Well, scalpers are a big part of the current problem as well. And they seem to be affecting Nvidia's new graphics cards as much as the new consoles. Who knows ultimately how many consoles and graphics cards are currently still out there, slowly being sold off by scalpers and even lots of online shops for huge profits.

@Atzenkiller: Yeah. I just saw The Medium is releasing soon and went to the Steam page to check the recommended system requirements, and all the hardware they are recommending is out of stock. So that's what gaming will be now: gamers forced to play new games on outdated hardware.

@Tidus1012: And the PS5 has what exactly for games? A glorified DLC sold at 2 times what its worth and a remaster? Neither system has exactly a lot going for it from a games stand point currently. But hey you do you with the same tired troll attempts

@kgsg-19-2: Looking at how nothing's changed yet, neither about the demand for the new consoles, nor about the companies' ability to produce anywhere near enough, my guess is that it might be a few more months at the very least until you can easily buy one on any online store at any time. It might take until the middle of the year at least.

I just saw an article today talking about some prognosis, according to which Sony is supposed to produce around 18 million units of the PS5 over the course of this year. If those 18 million units are sold worldwide that's not nearly enough if you look at the demand for it. Full on BC and the $400 price tag of the digital edition turn it into an unbeatable offer for any gamer. And with everyone stil being locked inside in most parts of the world games and consoles have never been more popular and more in demand.

So yeah, gotta keep waiting. Or pay those scalpers a fortune and through that keep growing that industry. And boy are there a lot of scalpers around now. Initially I thought that it was mostly private sellers but nope, absolutely everyone is looking to cash in and there's plenty of online shops that are currently selling the PS5 at exhorbitant prices. And you can be sure that lots of morons are buying them, no matter the cost. So the future of product releases is looking very grim now that money has completely lost its value for so many people. Only the biggest morons who are willing to pay double to scalpers will be able to get a product in the future. And the only solution for that I see is a lottery based system where everyone gets a chance to buy a product based on randomness, not on who is using bots or not.

@Atzenkiller: Scalpers selling on ebay prices have been going down recently which is a good sign, but also good in that they're making less money. Agreed, if sony/ms just added some sort of wait list or rain checks these would help as well.

@kgsg-19-2: I still don’t understand why a system like this isn’t in place

Wait

Get an email when your console is ready

Confirm payment

Ship

Sony and MS probably have contracts with retailers that wouldn’t allow them to do this unfortunately.

Looking forward to getting a PS5. I guess the lack of exclusive games makes the wait okay.

I still have a backlog to finish anyways.

Would be nice to get some actual supply/sales numbers compared to last gen launch

I was able to just walk into a Best Buy and pick up a PS4 in January 2014, just 2 months after launch. Wonder how demand for the new gen compares to that

@notjm: Yeah. If you’ve got a Pro or a One X, you’re totally fine right now.

I like my Series X, but that’s because it loads games super fast an my last gen games mostly run a bit faster on it. There’s almost nothing exclusive to either current gen. system that’s worth dealing with trying to buy one until they’re widely available. They’re basically graphics card upgrades right now.

@mogan: Well said. Gears5 and Fortnite are the only two titles i've played thus far where they've added impressive changes, but otherwise it's just faster.

@mogan: Couldn’t disagree more. Demon’s Souls is a gorgeous AAA game, fully takes advantage of PS5 hardware and is one of the greatest games I’ve ever played. Astro is also amazing and what they managed to do with the tech in that controller is incredible. Both of these titles are significantly more than “graphics card upgrades”.

I like my One X and don’t care to go running around trying to find new console. Waiting a year when more games come out like Battlefield 6. Things will settle down in time and consoles will be available with better titles.

They obviously need to! This is a strange generation in gaming. Its like only, the next generation of gaming for less than 1% of all gamers! LOL. Nobody I know has a next gen system. Everyone is still playing last gen. No choice really. I remember when the last several new systems came, everyone pretty much got one easy. (mostly)

@soulcrusher777: Well, things have changed. In the past you had to be able to afford or be willing to pay the high prices for a brand new console at launch. The PS3 cost $600 at launch and the PS2 almost $500 if you convert it. And almost 500 bucks in the year 2000 was a shit ton of money for some gaming console compared to today. While now the PS5 had launched about 20 years later and still only costs 500 bucks, or even only 400 if you're willing to ditch the disc drive.

So in past times money was always a limiting factor. Another big factor was the usual lack of games after any console launch, but that's also been eliminated because the new consoles have full BC. So there's really no reason for anyone to wait anymore and prices don't drop anymore either. If you were thinking about buying a new console eventually, then you might as well do it now. And that's why demand is higher than ever before. Even though Sony has actually provided more units than they did during past launches. So the issue is not that Sony has produced less than they did before, as some people like to make it seem. It's that they grossly miscalculated the demand for its new product. Same as MS of course. But could they have known for sure how in demand their new consoles would be?

Was lucky enough to get both at retail and can say right now I like my XSX more just because I do prefer the ecosystem and game pass currently is better than PS Now but I fully expect Sony to become more competitive. Once more exclusives start rolling in then we shall see which sees more playtime. I could honestly recommend both though. Both sides did a fantastic job this generation and it comes down to the games you want to play vs which console is better hardware wise.

In today's world, "ramping up" console production means future red-ring type issues.
