Microsoft: 'new Xbox' comments were misunderstood

Microsoft says comments "not understood in their intended context"; were in reference to fall Xbox update, not a new console.

Last week, Microsoft general manager Brian Hall referred to a "new Xbox" in an interview with The Verge. Now, Microsoft has released a statement on the matter, saying Hall's comments were misunderstood. Microsoft says Hall was actually referring to the upcoming Xbox Live fall update, not a new console.

Hall was referring to this fall's Xbox Live update, Microsoft says.
Hall was referring to this fall's Xbox Live update, Microsoft says.

"The comments to The Verge were not understood in their intended context," a Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge. "When Brian mentioned a 'new wave of products,' he was referring to the full lineup of products coming later this year from Microsoft, including Windows 8, Office, Windows Phone, and of course our fall Xbox update which will bring a host of new consumer experiences like Xbox Music, Videos, Games on Windows 8, and Xbox SmartGlass."

The analyst consensus is that the next Xbox, as well as the PlayStation 4, will be on store shelves for holiday 2013. A recent 56-page document supposedly originating from Microsoft said the next Xbox would launch in 2013 at $299 bundled with the second iteration of Kinect, among other updates.

There is no reason to start next generation ! At least in my idea .. Graphics are still OK (upcoming games looking good like Beyond , Halo 4 , BioShock infinite ) , Kinect is still NEW , PS Move are new TOO !! So , what's gonna be a reason to start a new generation ?!!!!

No one is going to be surprised when new consoles are announced. Instead of everything cheering it is just going to be "finally we get to see what it looks like"

If you have the Red Ring of Death on your XBOX, you can always do something like this to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp5pLnCAnvw

Especially since the new one is dropping soon anyway.

It doesn't matter what they say because we all know it's inevitable. I just hope they don't think we actually believe them. If they are planning to have some huge announcement with a big unveiling, they have already ruined it. There will be no surprise party there. Now this might all work out if we were 8 years old....

Yay, the new update is gonna add a whole bunch of shitty features I don't want and won't ever use to my Xbox 360 instead of working closer to getting me a new console.

@Carreau13 I think they are trying whatever desperate tactics they can to sell the current hardware instead of getting mass shipments back from retailers when the new ones come out. Just a gut feeling, but I bet they are sitting on several hundred thousand (if not mills) between retailers and their own warehouses.

Sony is right about new console, which should be able to show significant improvement, or the company will take a loss if they push it!

It seems some crazy developers and companies(NOT THE CONSUMERS) are so desperate to have new console to boost their sells. Can't they let Wii U thrive for a moment, or care a bit more about environmental aspect.

This should have been obvious when he said it would cost $299.99 and come with a Kinect. Thats the current X360. Use common sense people.

I'm pretty sure everyone making comments on this article is completely clueless.

Brian Hall is NOT denying that there's a next gen Xbox in the works. All he is saying is that his quote was taken the wrong way. What is IS denying is that the next gen Xbox will be out this year (but hey, everyone already knew that).

Why anyone on these comments believes MS is 'hiding' something is ridiculous. What are they hiding? None of Brian Hall's comments in the article above are about hiding anything.

Thank you for that. It is ridiculous how people getting so angry over an article that doesn't really say anything.

As for people upset about them not announcing anything, maybe that is because things like a new console should be announced with preparation and planned. What do people want? Next E3 microsoft shows the 720 logo and that's it?

@Landsharkk His original statement never implied it was coming this year, and thus no one inferred such. He simply mentioned a "new xbox" with no date (even a year). That's why this backtracking is unnecessary, we all know that one day there will be a new xbox.

current gen consoles are still too powerful. developers haven't even utilized the full potential of the cell processor alone. no need for next gen yet.

if there's not going to be a new xbox THAT would be news.

yes there's gonna be a Xbox "720" and PS4. the only thing to stop it is the world ending this december...which is not gonna happen.

@uglypinkmoose Yes, I truely agree with you. We just got new consoles for a few years, and they want us to buy a new one again? No way. If we let it happen and support this practice, they will launch new console as often as Nintendo DS series.

@jark888 This cycle has been in place for decades, generations typically last for 5-7 years, that's it.

@parrot_of_adun

But in previous generations, big leaps were made in 5-7 years.

Now 5-7 years doesn't even equal a generation leap.

That said, if the rumors of the specs are true, they'll be using low end 2009 pc tech to run 'next gen'.

So basically the games will run at 1080 as a rule instead of 720 or 588 and have DX11 features.

There are ATI 3XXX series cards with more raw power than the rumored graphics card ATI 6670 in the next gen. Even a GTX 670 isn't a generational difference from a 360/PS3. It's got DX11 and 11.1 and can game at 1080 (or higher) with much better textures. Sure it's a lot better, but it's not a generational leap. Nintendo to Genesis/Super Nintendo was bigger. Those systems to 3DO/Saturn/PS/N64 was bigger. Those to Dreamcast/Xbox/PS2 was bigger. Those to 360/PS3 were bigger.

They need to wait past dx11.1 to dx12. They need to take their time and develop a system that works. The economy is also going to get worse from here and get far worse than 2008, and it would be wise to delay just because of that.

@LindBergh2007 Those are just early specs from 2010 rumors. Earlies leak was from EG Digital foundary and he didnt confirm any specs found from the SDK, only some random lines stating DX11 binary and Durango codename all over the files. Not like you need a genius to figure that out.

@TrueGB Nope. The 360's final SKU resign will come this holiday season. Durango is the successor to 360. Its being designed with a customized ARM based SoC CPU and a Nvidia Ge Force high end 500 series GPU with DX 11,Open GL 4.2 and UE4 customization. Mircosoft is looking for inexpensive silicon.

Watch, next E3 expect a s*** ton Kinect games, and non-gaming software. The Xbox 360 is going casual, with some water down multiplats. Feel bad for Xbox Players.
