Microsoft not planning to release Halo games on Steam

Company shoots down speculation that Halo 3, or any other entries in the series, is coming to PC.

Gamers hoping to see Halo titles on Steam are out of luck, at least for now. Responding to a recent report that suggested Halo 3 could come to Valve's virtual store, a Microsoft spokesperson told GameSpot that this is not the case.

No Caption Provided

"We currently do not have plans to release any Halo titles on Steam," the company said.

Halo 3 data was found in the Steam database recently, suggesting the 2007 Bungie-developed first-person shooter was potentially planned for the PC.

Though Microsoft has no plans to release Halo games on Steam at present, it is possible this philosophy could change.

Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 both are currently available for the PC, though subsequent entries Halo 3: ODST, Halo: Reach, and Halo 4 are currently Xbox 360 exclusives.

I dont think they will release a halo game anymore on pc because, they will loose most of community thats on xbox. Obviously pc games look way better with sweet textures and if halo comes out for pc, none of the fans would like to play it on the xbox and move over to pc gaming, in turn loosing money for MS. so they might as well stick with their xbox and keep halo xbox community alive.

this is what i think personally.
and even though im a big fan of the halo series and still play halo 2 pc:D , i dont expect them to release a pc version anytime soon.

I played Halo for PC because it came out at the same time as console, or nearly the same time. Didn't touch Halo 2 just because of the delay. It was like, 2 years later for PC... At which point it's going to look like garbage compared to I think BF2 was just out around then. And, probably not half as fun. If they think a game like halo is going to get me to buy an Xbox so I can have years old tech to play a game, they're wrong...

I wonder if they will update and port Halo 4 to the next-gen Xbox. I rather enjoy Halo 4 for the first time on next-gen, with updated graphics.

I've played every Halo game, except for Halo 4, but I wouldn't mind buying a Halo 3 PC, ODST PC, or Halo Reach PC.

Although this kind of news is a major tease. Here I go, knew Microsoft would never do such a thing and then I hear this kind of news that might prove everyone wrong.. and then Microsoft crushes our hearts once again. What's new? lol

Cheers.

Just buy a 360. Pretty much everyone should have one by now. You'd spend more on a GPU than it'd cost to buy a 360. Then you could also play Red Dead Redemption, Gears 2&3 and Judgement and GTAV.

@x-2tha-z I don't have a 360 because I got tired of paying to get it fixed every time it dies.

Well, you could have just said, buy an Xbox 360 and/or PS3 to enjoy console exclusives and stopped there.

Where is the "dislike" button?

Ok, you don't want to make it for PC, no problem. Being a PC gamer I can found plenty of great FPS games. Dont bother us with these news.

If halo 4 was released on the PC it wouldn't get the same amount of attention from PC gamers like it did from console gamers.

I've played every Halo game on my XBox 360. They're decent but the PC isn't missing anything too special. There are plenty of better FPS games for the PC.

@flyingdutchdog3 There are all types in both PC and video gamers. I can't help it if the vast majority of console gamers are too dumb to figure out how to build a PC. ~grin~

Was that enough, or should I go farther to show that I'm a "pretentious elitist"? ~obvious sarcasm~

@vicsrealms The whole elitist term comes from the fact that PC gamers say that if you don't buy it for PC, it's not even worth the purchase. Meanwhile I don't really give a damn, mainly because I'm very flexible. PC gaming only gives you shiny graphics and a few more numbers on the frames scale, and mods are typically only ever really used for big shot RPGs.

To be quite honest I don't see a difference. I play either or not because one is better, but because it's what I feel like buying it for.

This is how people should be. Having mods and better graphics doesn't make you any better. The content and gameplay are the same either way.

I don't understand why Microsoft are so intent on keeping the Halo games as 360 only. Mac and PC should be fine.

They should sell it on Steam. It would help their sales definitely. I left off with Halo 2, because I was never interested in buying an Xbox 360, so it would've been really awesome to get these games out on Steam. Halo and Gears of War would be really awesome in my opinion. Hope someday they do this.

Thanks for writing a whole new article instead of just updating the last one like anyone else would.

Anyway, I think it's stupid of them not to release the older games on PC. No one buys a 360 to play Halo 3 or ODST. It wouldn't hurt their sales. It would only help.

I'd have bought them all if they were out for PC. As it is, only Halo: Combat Evolved is available, since as I understand it, Halo 2 requires Vista.

Can't blame Microsoft for wanting to push sales of their XBOX with exclusives like Halo, but it sucks nonetheless.

I'm not gonna lie... I'd have picked it up for a few bucks to check it out. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it or anything.

But, Microsoft, let's just go ahead and say what we all know... "this whole GFWL thing was a joke from the start, right?"

The only time I even considered this as a possibility was yesterday, when I read this article on Gamespot written by Eddie-

http://www.gamespot.com/news/halo-3-coming-to-steam-6403351

Then I realized, the title ends with question mark, it was written by Eddie and it is an article featured on Gamespot. Of course it's not true.

They won't port it until 360 ceases production. If Halo is ported, Xbox sales will plummet.

A 6 years old game with dated visuals and mechanics? It doesn't even stand a chance by today standards and what's currently and is going to be available on PC.If they did actually bring it to pc, it would most likely be a gimmick like halo 2 PC Vista exclusive was but this time for Windows 8.They would be selling a brand, not a game.

Well i guess microsoft doens't like money, they would earn alot of cash if they had Halo 1 on steam or ported over Halo 3 and made it use steam since the games would go on sale very often, dos generating income for microsoft all the time during big sales on steam.

@NightmareP3 And they would lose a 360 exclusive which is the opposite of what they want to do. Your logic is rather stupid , no offence.

@Darnasian @NightmareP3 Well with the new xbox theres no point in keeping x360 exclusives because no one is going to buy an x360 anymore.

@Darnasian @NightmareP3 As long as the newer games are exclusive it doesn't really matter. No one buys a 360 to get a 5 year old game.

@NightmareP3 From a business standpoint, releasing it on pc, especially through another company's service would be a horrible idea. Steam would take 30% of the revenue, it would likely have a lower price to begin with, and no one would buy an xbox to play halo anymore.

@reincarnator07 @NightmareP3 Steam gets good sales numbers, GFWL does not. It would be smart solely based off that.gears of War should too.

@reincarnator07 @NightmareP3 I doubt anyone buys a 360 anymore to play Halo 3.Halo 4 and reach are selling 360s right now.

So porting Halo 3 onto PC and making it use steam would allow microsoft to earn some money all the time, it's safe to say it would sell good since the first Halo's community is still going strong and very far away from death. Some Halo 1 Pc fans wanted Halo 3 and reach on PC so much, they actully made mods which remake the multiplayer of those games into the older Halo 1 engine.

Nothing against consoles but FPS-games just don't feel right for me unless played on the PC. Never understood the exclusive mentality on this since I think the Halo series would've done well on PC. Though now I believe it's a bit too late after all these years. I LOVED the first Halo on PC all those years ago but now I don't really care about the series anymore. A shame, yes but plenty other shooters out there that outclass the Halo-franchise.

@onikay Halo is exclusive to the Xbox so it could promote Xbox sales. If it didn't gain so much popularity it probably would have been ported to the PC.

I feel the same way now , i loved Halo 1 alot. It's one of my favorite games and the MP community is still going strong for it, however after waiting for so long to get Halo 3 on PC iv'e just simply lost intrest in the series now. Even if they did port Halo 3 onto PC, i'd only pick it up if it was very, very cheap.
