Microsoft On The Future Of The Fable Series

Would you like to see Fable return someday?

In March last year, Microsoft made the announcement that it was closing long-running British studio Lionhead, which made the Fable and Black & White franchises, among others. The closure of the studio also meant that the Xbox One and PC game Fable Legends was being canceled. A digital card game called Fable Fortune was released, though this game was released by an outside studio (with support from Microsoft, which owns the Fable rights). But will there ever be another mainline Fable game? That remains to be seen, but if Microsoft were to bring it back, that would please Xbox boss Shannon Loftis, who heads up Xbox's first-party publishing team.

She told GameSpot this week as part of her PAX Aus travels that Microsoft loves Fable as a franchise. One of the main reasons why Loftis moved to England years ago was to help lead the production of Fable II.

Fable Legends
Fable Legends

"Fable is very near and dear to my heart," Loftis said. "Actually one of the primary reasons [I moved to England] was to work with the team on Fable II. Fable Fortune is now out, the card game. We love the IP. I can't talk right now about whether we're doing anything with it or not, but if I ever get the chance to go back to Albion ... "

Loftis' role as GM of Xbox Publishing for first-party games means she would be a key player in bringing back the Fable franchise. Though as of yet, we don't know if there have been any pitches internally at Microsoft to do so. She told GameSpot that her team receives between 350 and 400 pitches for games every year. Given the name and prominence of Fable as a franchise, we would be surprised if it never came back. But for now, it sounds like Microsoft is taking a similar to approach to how EA is handling Mass Effect, in that it is giving the franchise time to rest before potentially bringing it back.

Fable Legends had big ambitions. Microsoft envisioned the free-to-play cooperative game living for as many as 10 years, with Microsoft releasing updates constantly to keep players engaged. You would have played as a hero or villain, and the game was not in its earliest stages, as Microsoft was testing it in the wild. But it was not to be.

Lionhead was founded by Peter Molyneux in 1996 and was acquired by Microsoft in 2006. Molyneux left Microsoft and Lionhead in March 2012. Would you like to see more Fable games? Let us know in the comments below!

I'm not going to lie. I seriously want this. But it's not fair without Peter Molyneux and the gang backing it up in the creative department. It's their baby.

Just watched the unfiltered interview with Peter Molyneux and I'm just realizing how much I miss the series. Playing Fable 2 again right now, it's so much fun and making custom heroes and intricate outfit combinations with all the clothing slot pieces is so much fun even in 2017 on that old game.

Fanboying a bit here.

One more thing Microsoft can do to make the game even better and more enjoyable.

Bring back the dog! Make a pet an option no matter what, you can make the game run smoother by forcing players to park their dogs at a kennel upon entering towns and cities, until they hurt someone and are evil enough to have their dogs booted from the kennel and waiting for them outside the city limits.

Dog breeding, or breeding in general - Pokemon really picked up their game and added stones, timezones, special moments for breeders etc - you can improve a players chance at showing up by giving them the boost like a dog breed or wild moment for a larger, wolf like, or short tail, 3 eyed mongrel or Cerberus.. whatever people can come up with.

Fable meets No Mans Sky meets a taste of Pokemon and we got ourselves a game!

To add to my previous post,

The Fable series is the beginning of something marvelous if you look at the pieces you are welcome to start with a character from scratch, a youngster and grow them up to be a gladiator, or monk, or princess or whatever you want. The best part is it's based on crowd sourced designs so clothing, armor, weapons, buildings, like Steam and Counter Strike GO or Team Fortress, you get a bit of custom based on approval by the moderator.

That would give Microsoft the chance to expand on areas quicker that would take forever otherwise, like what a character does with all their gold? Build a home, then a farm, a village, a town square. How you want it. Defend it.

Setup monsters that break free ever so many years and raiders from the North that steal the offspring and sheep, make campaigns that never really end and get harder every time you go bout. it's always fun that way for me when I play online.

Fable was adored for it's creepy customization and quirky humor in serious moments, GTA took a bit from this and Twisted Metal was another game full of Dark humor, we want more of that!

Give the characters and their player more social interaction and make trading essential for certain things like food. You can starve in Fable! You can and must go hunt, raid, protect, earn, steal, murder, pillage, build etc to eat or you begin to lose health slowly but surely.

Big fan, like Pokemon, Fable has it's own set of rewards you are allowed to choose between the good and bad side. You can use evil weapons and kills innocent people and much like GTA you are rewarded and punished in different ways for every choice you make throughout the game.

If I was given the position to layout the next 10 years of the game I would keep in mind that players expect at least that much longevity of decision making to take place. It requires a lot of space to give every player a character that will grow old and expand for 10 years in a digital space. You would have to create a game based on legacy rather than legend. Fable led up to that to FABLE 3 when you are the heir.

Why not make the online game something similar? I played Black and White when I was younger and loved the concept of playing god and throwing your subjects around, reminded me of Dungeon Keeper having peons and what not. Fable deserves that growth. The artwork is amazing and Game of Thrones has gotten bigger than ever, why not continue to feed the imaginations of youth with a game that allows your character to live on--- unlike Dark Souls which is all about death and redo--- Fable can be about birth, the cycle of heirs and where you lead your legacy. Evil paths will be given a long term consequence based on how you decide your character and their descendants behave.

I imagine Adam Sandlers Click in a way where you make a continual decision and you can auto choose to sacrifice the virgin or raid the new village or raise the taxes etc... making you more evil as the flow of time goes on and also leaving you vulnerable to revolt. Good choices create a more reliable leadership role and your villagers provide more when they can.

Fable in its original form needs to return. We told you to this a long time ago before that disaster was announced and yeah obviously you canceled it because nobody asked for that. There literally was no hype around it what so ever. Its art direction should reflect a more grown up approach like the Witcher 3/Skyrim games. Open world WRPG is what is needed. You could even add maybe an online component to it but the core campaign game should be Fable of old. If not then don't bother making it and focus on something new taking core elements from it.

I still have the Fable 3 Collectors edition "book" with the coin and the cards in it. I miss those games. The proper Fable games. Give me more of 2!

A proper Fable IV, more akin to Anniversary or Fable II, with a more open world, I would absolutely love. It could be brilliant with the power of the newer consoles. It would definitely give Xbox One another good exclusive game, and Xbox needs that right now. It's like the opposite of Wii U. It has the support from third party and relies mostly on them, where Wii U relied on first party and barely received third party support. Sea of Thieves in about the only thing I can think of near future that is releasing that's exclusive. Forza 7 if that's not already out, and then whenever Crackdown makes its way out. Cuphead was good for Xbox.

I really don't see with or how they can sell me new fable if there will be one, Sure it was nice franchise by it's time but by today's standards it won't sell much.

@sdecker425: MS won't risk it unless they sell franchise to other company, less likely.

Even if M$ did bring it back, it would be a loot box filled nightmare like Halo 5, Forza, and Halo Wars 2. Better leave it as a memory.

This may be completely off base, but I don't see M$ continuing to compete in the console space forever. It doesn't seems like their heart is in it like Nintendo and Sony (in other words it's not their main business unit, so they don't really care about Xbox, like the Zune, for example).

@csward: M$ will shift to third-party, just like Sega. And like Sega, their bitterness will shine through when their first batch of titles don’t release on PlayStation.

Still, it’s only a matter of time before the REAL decision makers (shareholders) force them to drop Halo on PS. Money talks.

I loved the charm and character of those games and i find it hard to beleive you can just start up a new studio that can replicate the love that was clearly poured into the first 2

God that would be great if they pulled it off though id hate them if they butched such a great memory

Now that Lionhead was gone and the rights all belong to Microsoft, let’s hope that they aren’t asking Platinum Games to make the sequel.

Well if it ever comes back, it won’t be a single player story driven game, Microsoft don’t make those anymore as it’s harder to milk.

We love Fable! We loved it so much so we perverted it from being an RPG, tried to turn it into F2P garbage, and then we killed it!

I would love to see a left4dead style 4 Vs 1 melevelant director(who can play in RTS, add zombies, a crushendo moment, add weather effects, add poison rain, create creatures from their vault, where the games so unpredictable and ever changing while the director sends in dogs , each map has a theme.) The team will have wielders to lock doors, guns, and if they succeed the game gets harder the player can spawn into the game as their creation turning the game into evolve.(but the player can custom build their monsters then play them if the conditions in favour of losing or have one look like their team mates, who you thought walked of and died but it's actually the directors manipulating the team by muting the player who died)

Wow I want to play it ohhh.

@WeskerTeam: Yet that was time when MS game corp was still going strong. Having Fable is better than the current drought.

I don't really want Fable to return. All this just reflects how MS is handling their game development. Nothing new coming and even with the old franchises they are like "yes we kinda like them, but it's really not up to us or that important", not even trying to milk them.

Can't see any Fable game making a return anytime soon. Realistically, Microsoft would have to either create a new studio to make it or hand it over to one of their existing ones. That decision could take years to manifest and then there's the actual production of the game, which could be an additional 2 - 3 years, maybe more, depending on scope and money Microsoft would throw at a risky franchise like this. Bottom line is, you won't even get a sniff at this until 2020 at the earliest.

Considering the direction Microsoft is taking it'd probably be a MMORPG and that would be awesome since those are lacking when it comes to consoles.
