Microsoft passed on Heavy Rain due to game's child kidnapping themes

David Cage reveals Microsoft wanted to avoid the scandal associated with publishing a game that featured child abduction.

Heavy Rain director and Quantic Dream studio co-founder David Cage has revealed that Microsoft turned down publishing the game on the platform, suggesting that "they didn't want the scandal" of being associated with a game with child abduction as a central theme.

No Caption Provided

The news came as part of Cage's presentation at the BAFTA Annual Games Lecture being held in London, as reported by Polygon. According to the outspoken French developer, while the Xbox creator "really loved Fahrenheit" and "really wanted to do something with us," the two couldn't come together on the developer's next project, with the pair philosophically opposed.

"Microsoft is a great company, I'm not complaining or criticising," Cage said, explaining that Sony was far more receptive to the game's concept and themes, resulting in the two companies moving ahead to collaborate on what would become the PlayStation 3-exclusive cinematic adventure, Heavy Rain.

While still independently owned, Quantic Dream has worked closely with Sony in recent years, and is currently preparing to release PlayStation 3-exclusive adventure game Beyond: Two Souls. The software developer also unveiled a PlayStation 4 tech demo called The Dark Sorcerer at E3 2013.

there was a child kidnapping in it, but it wasn't celebrating it. there was no controversy..... Microsoft, you really need to hire more intelligent people.

Of all the stupidest excuses to reject a game. Yet you proudly promote guns and murder in other games.

Yes, because nothing portrayed in an Xbox game is more controversial than child kidnapping as a theme. *much eye-rolling here* Wow.

Turn down the game because it's got a realistic theme. And realism = scandal. What nonsense. Microsoft are such losers. I really wanted to play this game, but only had a 360.

Ok fine. Whatever. Who gives a shit about Xbox. Just release it on PC already. PS4 can't play PS3 games outside of some crappy streaming feature. I'd rather the game be future proof. Seriously. Re-release it on GOG.com or Steam.

It also featured nudity, alcohol use, smoking, disturbing images...but the inclusion of the child kidnapping in a game, was simply too much for the audience.

They played safe, because they didn't trust the game to be that good. And they really want solid revenues.

what I don't get is they pass on heavy rain they say because of the taking of a child. but then they put out dishonored on the xbox and the entire storyline was trying to get back the kidnapped girl. can we call bs on this. I think the game was something different and they was scared of that.

@Tao_and_Zen @Snakepond1 She was good in Juno and hasn't been since. She can't seem to drop that character from Juno. Look at inception, hard candy, or that stupid roller skate movie she made. She's always the same character.

Cause of a child kidnapp? I would understand if it were a child murder or a child rape. But kidnapping, unfortunately, we see everyday in the news. It's nothing so shocking. There are worse themes used in other games, btw.

@brunod_f Because this is M$ aka Microsoft. you know the other company that everyone loves to hate. If M$ had released Heavy Rain as an exclusive you and I and even your grandmother would have heard about how it had a child being kidnapped. that's just how things are. Sony could release a game where you vaginally rape prostitutes and house wives in a game wrapped inside a open world story driven type game and it would probably go under the radar. LIke many things M$ probably saw the potential for bad press over the potential for sales.

Hah, the scandal? I think they're overestimating the consequences of supporting such a game, but we *have* seen some ignorant people lash out at certain games before, so it's not completely unlikely. Man, that David Cage was too damn edgy and dark for MS. He also had too much integrity to bow down and change his vision. What happened when Sony published it? Nothing, in terms of a scandal anyway.

I haven't played any of Quantic Dream's, but Heavy Rain seemed equally good as/better than Fahrenheit (or Indigo Prophecy as it was also called). Their old game Omikron: The Nomad Soul is on gog and I'm tempted to buy it - it has David Bowie in it!

Whatever fills your ego Mr. Cage....whatever fills your ego.

Yes. Microsoft wouldn't sell you game because of a child being kidnapped...but they had no problems releasing games 10X worse when it comes to violence and story factor like GTA, Saints Row, Gears of War, Call of Duty,...I could go on and on but at the end of the day

I still don't give two fucks about your QTE Movie Games.

@frylock1987 Lets be clear. Sex and violence, especially if it's presented in an action, summer blockbuster kind of way, sells well... extremely well actually. Child kidnapping - that's a completely different kind of violence and I could easily see any publisher taking a step back from that proposal. It's not hard to distinguish between the two or put yourself in someone else's shoes on making that call, nor is it unreasonable to think that a company would avoid the chance of attracting bad PR at the risk of losing money, especially since bad PR can cause you to lose capital over very extended periods of time.

@horizonwriter

No, Let me be clear.

In GTA 4 on 360, I can pretty much kidnap a hooker, take her to an alley somewhere, Have sex with her, kill her, then take her money. Same thing with Red Dead Redemption on 360. I can literally tie somebody up, throw the on my horse and proceed to kidnap them, take them somewhere ina desert and shoot them in the back of their head as they lay on the ground tied up. But I guess thats completely different to you and not as terrible because its not a child im doing that to right? People these days are so fucking dumb I swear....

I highly doubt Microsoft would have had no problems with this game on their console. I don't know why developers are so scared to just grow a pair and say

"Yeah, this is coming to this console only, instead of both, because this company is giving me more money to make it an exclusive for their console"

its really not that hard at all. Sure, you'll come off as a greedy prick, but at least your being honest about it.

@frylock1987 Who said anything about my personal opinion? It's not completely different to me at all nor do I take issue with the game (outside of the controls, I loved it) but I'm not the bad PR they might be trying to avoid. Have you not seen the crazy groups that make huge issues out of next to nothing? That's what a company might try to avoid. Is it foolish? Sure, if for no other reason than the people that are actually going to be buying the product (i.e. gamers) have seen worse in video games and aren't mindless fucktards that can't tell the difference between that and reality, but look how much crap got started just by someone saying that the Sandy Hook shooter was a gamer. It isn't right but yeah, it's more than enough to give a big company reason to pause and pass on the association. If you can't see that then you probably shouldn't be calling others the fucking dumb ones...

@frylock1987 You obviously just bothered to read the title, beacause David Cage says in the article that it's not his intention to criticize, just to explain why it wasn't released on Xbox.

I feel so underestimated as a consumer, like the time Konami bailed from publishing the Battle of Fallujah videogame. Seriously Microsoft, do you expect Nintendo to pull rank on you with this kind of idiocy or what?

@Bellum_Sacrum Yeah, child abduction is truly scary, because it's something that actually happens in real life. How many people do you hear get mutilated with chainsaws? That kind of violence is so unusual and over-the-top that you don't acknowledge it, but when reality comes knocking in the form of child abduction you run away.

With the lack of quality exclusives the 360 had, you'd think they would have jumped all over this.
