Microsoft passed on Heavy Rain due to game's child kidnapping themes

David Cage reveals Microsoft wanted to avoid the scandal associated with publishing a game that featured child abduction.

Heavy Rain director and Quantic Dream studio co-founder David Cage has revealed that Microsoft turned down publishing the game on the platform, suggesting that "they didn't want the scandal" of being associated with a game with child abduction as a central theme.

No Caption Provided

The news came as part of Cage's presentation at the BAFTA Annual Games Lecture being held in London, as reported by Polygon. According to the outspoken French developer, while the Xbox creator "really loved Fahrenheit" and "really wanted to do something with us," the two couldn't come together on the developer's next project, with the pair philosophically opposed.

"Microsoft is a great company, I'm not complaining or criticising," Cage said, explaining that Sony was far more receptive to the game's concept and themes, resulting in the two companies moving ahead to collaborate on what would become the PlayStation 3-exclusive cinematic adventure, Heavy Rain.

While still independently owned, Quantic Dream has worked closely with Sony in recent years, and is currently preparing to release PlayStation 3-exclusive adventure game Beyond: Two Souls. The software developer also unveiled a PlayStation 4 tech demo called The Dark Sorcerer at E3 2013.

Whoever made that decision should be fired, unless they already have been.

So MS assumes their customers are cool with endless dismemberment and gore, but a potentially real-life scenario, and a pair of digital tits would just be too much to bare? What a backwards country they call home.

What a mistake. Heavy Rain was such a touching game. And wtf? They denied Heavy Rain but have green-lighted a multitude of horrendous games. Nice.

@PumpkinBoogie @kougr88 @rojbin100 Shooters of course make the most money. They have the biggest market of gamers (way to state the obvious bud). That goes for both systems just so you're aware. Killzone is on the PS, Uncharted is on the PS, Call of Duty also on the PS, of course. To say Microsoft is mainly shooters, Is just incompetent of you. By the way, you don't put "and" after a semicolon smart guy. Trying to look smart and failing = looking unbelievably dumb.

Well, no more than your silly ass taking an sarcastic comment and going on defensive, now is it?

......or for that matter even assuming me to being a 'fanboy'......or even a 'boy' at.*shrugs*

But the point of comment is basically true when you see the market of the games they're constantly harping on. Hell, it's what made their company in the gaming industry. Of course, shooters aren't all they do, but sadly it's the thing they've pigeon-holed themselves into; and that road is what makes them the most money--so please don't shit yourself there.

The facts are what they are in terms of the genres that enjoys the most success on their consoles.

Geez, talking about somebody needing 'to get real'.....<_<

Child abduction is a no no.

But brutally murdering people and chainsawing them until blood splatters across the screen is fine in my book.

@Warlord_Irochi @zzamaro Because GTA is a best selling franchise and Heavy Rain was a new IP that is pretty much an interactive movie.

Anyway, looking forward to get Grand Theft Auto V and Beyond: Two Souls on my PS3.

@lc4eav LOL. They're just shunting creative freedom at this stage. If your game wants to have a story where a child is abducted (not, you're not the abductor, you're trying to rescue your child who has been abducted) you can't get your game published by them.

This is something that happens in movies all the time, and no one makes a big deal out of it. But if this storyline is used in a game it's not OK.

What IS ok, is a No Russian level where you pose as a terrorist and massacre a bunch of civilians in an airport.

@lc4eav And yet they don't feel any shame publishing games that portray other ethnicities as barbaric terrorist murderers that need to be annihilated from the face of the planet, now that's a laugh.

@haze0986 @jark888 Just as the tittle suggest "Beyond." When you play David Cage's game(s) and take a close inspection, you will see that he somehow always lead the gaming industry. Here's the example: what other game studios brought renown Hollywood stars to act in their games. He fully adopted MoCap and other techs since Heavy Rain. Game like Heavy Rain is not only complex, unique, time consuming but also really hard to make. That's why we can hardly see anybody else make it. He made it a huge success while other much bigger companies not even dare to start such a project (all they care is raking in money).

In short, I just believe in the guy and judged that base on the quality of games he'd made so far.

There's a lot of fanboy misrepresentation here. MS didn't want to publish the game, that's all. David didn't say that they were forbidding it for X360 release. I'm sure if, say, Ubisoft wanted to release it for the 360, MS would let them.

That said, MS does need to get some guts.

Great. I invested in a company who are a bunch of overly sensitive pussies. Who will allow a game like Grand Theft Auto 5, which will involve murder, sex, drugs, and wanton destruction, but not a game that centers around...kidnapping?

Glad I ordered a PS3. I'm so disappointed in you Microsoft. If it wasn't for Halo, Gears of War, Dead Rising, and Titanfall, I would have jumped ship months ago.

@zzamaro In that case the background is too unrealistic. Limbo is too untied to reality.
This was a very bad move anyway. How come GTA does not give them the same trouble?

So many games on Microsoft platforms contain graphic violence and sexual content, yet kidnapping children is where they draw the line!? I don't condone kidnapping, but why they don't approve of it is beyond me. I've seen children being kidnapped in all other forms of media and across all ratings (G, PG, etc.).

Microsoft seems to have forgotten what happened in MW2. How is this worse than the whole massacring a station full of innocent people? Its not like the game is going to promote and encourage kidnapping.
